I was at my work place when one of my secondary school teacher came in for some inquiries.

I finish secondary school about 15 years back and this teacher was already there before I entered JSS 1 and from my findings, he is still working there.

Now to the main issue... He came for some financial advice and so he provided me with his details. Currently his salary is about 125,000 and I heard he's now the vice principal academics of the school.

I was really heartbroken. How can someone sacrifice more than 20 years of his life building up leaders of tomorrow only to still be earning less than 200k. This is not good at all.

With this type of poor financial payment to teachers, it's obvious we can't be having serious minded individuals to take up the teaching profession.

From what everyone knows, teachers don't have a clear path to career growth. The highest one can get is to be a principal and the package that comes with that position will definitely be less than 300k.

as a vice principal and later principal there will be contracts he can influence. Interhouse sport’s organization and logistics who do you think controls the funds PTA and others nko. Everyone cannot be rich too

The primary problem is the total budget allocation for education in the country. There's no money to pay teachers or even lecturers higher salariés. Some Governors do try to enforce additional training/qualifications for teachers but which teacher after earning expensive qualifications will settle for such meagre wages?

Compare European institutions; working libraries with constant and free internet. You have access to as many research journals as you want, if you can't access it, request and they will get it for you.

This is why a huge proportion of research and theses from our institutions end up in the Dustbin. This is why we cannot develop as a nation because we can't research and discover solutions tailored to our environment.

It's a pity.

Some PRIVATE Schools Principals receive 35K salary! 😕😒

This Life in Naija, ain't easy @all. 😟
I thought in two schools that the highest paid staff were the Principals. I thought were receiving number salaries, as they worked their asses out. On my investigation, I learnt they on on 20K salary. A difference of 5K between them and the A-class teachers.

Most won't upgrade because they know they aren't going far as a teacher. The once who upgrade are doing so because they are leaving the teaching profession.

There is a reason why Anambra has the best public education and health sector in Nigeria and no state comes close

It's a complex mix of PPP it has worked reason every governor has kept it

And the results is obvious research oga even Bruce talked about it asking every state to copy it

Now what am thinking is....

Let govt officially create a career path for teachers/lecturers. Even though some of them are already doing it. But let it be official now.

Let govt and teachers council and NUC make it mandatory that lecturers should only be employed from secondary school teachers and secondary school teachers should only be employed from primary and nursery school teachers.

This is how it will work.

Let's say a graduate(BSc, B.Ed, NCE) starts his or her teaching career as a primary or nursery school teacher. From there the teacher aquires more qualification and progress to secondary. Then from secondary, the teacher probably gets a master's or more degree, then during recruitment of lecturer whether private or public, the candidates that will apply are those who are secondary school teachers with the necessary qualifications.

If the university is looking for professionals from industries, let those set of lecturer be visiting lecturers.

Good thought. However, the university is a system and by the time person progresses to the university, they are close to the end of their career. They won't know much about the university system as someone who joined as a GA/AL shortly after graduation.

Not really... If you start teaching after graduation, let's say 25 years. If you move into lecturing after 10years, you will be 35 years. That's still very young age for the candidate.

Would the person get a PhD within 10 years of graduation before joining the university or joining with an MSc?

Nigerians and baseless sentiments. He's making a good point, you're talking about a private decision of whether he "helped" him or not.

This is what feeds corruption. Government is at the root of the problem. Pay teachers well. Teachers should be paid like doctors. If anyone here is a parent, you will know how important a teacher is to your child's life. You can't pay such a person peanuts. One person cannot solve this. Old student association cannot. Do you know what it means for s teacher to teach people for over 10 years? You want to throw all of that away to go teach in University? It is a country that values education that won't let them go through stress in the name of making it in life. Your foundation starts from primary and secondary schools. All other things are addendum. If your foundation is bad, university cannot fix it

Much as I hate to admit it, this makes a lot of sense. However, this does not address the issue of poor remuneration that both teachers and lectures get. There are schools in this country where teachers earn 10k as their reward for working for 1 month.

Probably a state government school.
Teachers in some private international schools, especially in Lagos and Abuja are earning big.
I know teachers in a private school in Lagos who earn over 700k a month.
And the school is not yet in the league of the "big schools" in Lagos.

People are of the opinion that once you're teaching, then you haven't upgraded yourself enough. To them, by upgrading yourself is to leave teaching and find something else to do. This and many other absurd reasoning is why African is where it is today.

That's what you get when you live in a corrupt shit hole with low iq bigots and a meth kingpin for a president

When my grandfather was a teacher , a village head master he lived large back in the day with a house given to him by the state colonial government also given to other teachers
In the house you'll get a good running water and electricity
He was earning 1500 as his salary back then
