Sometimes I wish I could just look away from the ignorant posts I see on nairaland from people who have no clue of how things are in the UK.

They just imagine anything that comes to their heads and spill it as though they have an idea.

Bro, if you have the right to work and live in the UK earning average salary of £1700 after tax, you will still have at least £400 in savings if you don't cross your boundaries.
so going by this calculation it will take like 19yrs to raise 95k in savings shocked

I always see UK as a dry country i don't know why

Bro honestly speaking I thought same way until I came here.

Let me explain to people willing to come to the UK and this will be the pure truth.

1. Please don't come to THE UK without the right to work cos you will most likely be frustrated cos you will be exploited by landlords, wicked employers and even people who may promise you settlement by association.

2. If you come with a right to work please don't be picky for a start cos you actually need certification to get almost any job in the UK so be ready to see the one you see at the begining and move up from there.

3. Do not do pass your power. NHS is free and you don't have to go through waiting time(I won't discuss how here)

4. Because you can do as many jobs as possible just try to work to the point of making at least 1500 after tax (very possible)

5. If you live in London which is presumed to be the most exp city, you can still manage yourself by...

*Get a shared apartment with all bills inclusive for not more than 500 and make sure it is all bills inclusive meaning your monthly gas, water, electricity, WiFi, council tax fees are all included.

*Don't spend more than 200 to feed

*Get an affordable phone Internet subscription for 15

*Get a pay as you go oyster card for transportation and the maximum you could spend is 150

*Set aside 150 for misc.

You will still have savings of £415

Now remember you can actually earn far above 1500 after tax. So the more you earn the more you upgrade and you can also do side biz.

This is for a single person.

Walk your way up from this point.

Now the misconception is about the high price of rent but let me break it down once again.

In the UK, you live very quality life that people buy in Nigeria.

What is the cost of uninterrupted electricity in Nigeria?

What is the cost of one month cooking gas in Nigeria?

What will you pay to have a 5g WiFi sub good enough to stream movies non stop for one month?

How much do you pay in renting one very decent room.

Now relate this with paying 500pounds which is just about 6 days wage in the UK.

Now reason it out.

There is still a lot of job openings in the social care sector here in the UK, especially working with children and young persons though the recruitment process is very detailed with firms that know their onions.

E be like say those whey come visit you for Aro neuropsychiatric where you are admitted, sneaked in a smartphone for you, reason you have gone ga-ga. cheesycheesy cheesy

"Housemaid work" that after tax, insurance and pension have been deducted for working 160 hours a month, the net salary is equal to that of 80 Nigerian working and earning the minimum wage of N30k. cheesy cheesy
can that ur salary bigger than 80 Nigerian 30k be enough for ur expenses in the UK without getting broke and hoping for the next payday to come quickly?

For those working and earning 2M and above, it no longer makes sense.

Some people who were earning large in Naija 10-12 yrs ago, like the oil boys have seen their Naira earnings increase but the real value decreased geometrically.

Imagine if you were earning 1.65M per annum in 2011, that was $10,000, but today even if you got promoted 3 times and are now earning say 4M/year, that is now $ 3,333. You have essentially lost 70% of your earnings. Same is happening to pensions. By the time you retire, your pension contributions would be worthless.

Ok, if you were earning 700,000 a month in May 28th that was $1,000, but in 4 months that is $583.

This is what many are not seeing

Are you talking about 95k pounds?

If yes then you still need to know how thing work in the UK.

The system makes it easier to get what you want without the stress of saving huge sum and you can actually borrow that amount from a bank if you have good credit score and you can pay back in ridiculous bits every month.

See, there are many things one will never understand until you get into the system but whatever you do... DON'T EVER COMPARE SOUTH AFRICA LET ALONE UK with NIGERIA.

In Nigeria there is no job or biz security so you can be making 2m a month and you can wake up tomorrow and find yourself jobless.

1). Most of them spend all they earn on mortgage, rent, food, transport, car loan, credit card bills etc.

2). 99% of them will never be able to save $95,000 after 20 years. I can tell you for a fact that 90% of Nigerians in the UK don’t have £20,000 in cash to their name. Most who have net worth have their net worth in their homes because they have been paying mortgage and built equity over time. People say your home is an asset…is it? To get any money from the home you either sell it or you take a loan, so really it is just a psychological asset that in all probability you will never enjoy as it is your children that will inherit it. If you sell it you have to buy another home, or you go from homeowner to tenant. if you take a loan on it or remortgage, you have new debt o. So even Nigerians that have equity in their homes are stuck. 90% of Nigerians in the Uk cannot raise £10,000 without a bank loan or credit card. The system gives with one hand and takes it all with the other.

3. Finally someone on level 16 in Nigeria is likely close to or above 50 yrs old. How can someone who has achieved that status in Nigeria go to the uk to become a security guard? What is the sense in that?

There is nothing wrong in all you have said really

Taking advantage of credit to build your life and enjoy high quality of living is not a bad thing

Have you lived abroad? I have, so I can talk. Have you? Or is your opinion of life abroad based on movies and perceptions? If you have not then you are no position to make the comment in bold.

You need to understand something about life. There is more to life than finances, secondly once you solve your financial problems, other things become important, things 90% of Nigerians abroad will never get. Status, a sense of belonging, purpose, peace of mind. These things cannot be explained to people who have never lived abroad. Living abroad is like marriage. I wan marry I wan marry, it is only after you marry that many truly understand that wedding is the party and marraige is hardwork.

Finally, I never said don’t go abroad, I said, if you stay too long, diminishing returns will set in and you will hit a ceiling and become a slave to the system and those you left behind will eventually rise above and surpass you both in the finances that drove you abroad and status.

How many Nigerians abroad ever become anybody abroad? Less than .001%. How many Nigerians abroad rise to become company directors, asenior management or heads of the organisations they work for? Very few!!! How many Nigerians abroad know somebody in any position of authority, in Nigeria even the agbero or gateman knows somebody who knows somebody who knows the president.

that is the advantage of being “at home” that you lose when you overstay abroad, you become a nobody. And eventually once you are financially able to overcome the financial hardships that drove you from Nigeria, you will understand that being a somebody in society matters. Being a somebody does not mean being rich or being powerful. It just means you matter. You will never matter abroad unless you break into the very top and like I said, less than 1 of 10,000 Nigerians abroad will matter abroad, whereas by default no matter your status financially or otherwise, in Nigeria you matter. Worse still, you will raise children that have no identity, they won’t fit in abroad and they won’t fit in back home.

can that ur moni bigger than 80 Nigerian 30k be enough for ur expenses in the UK?

Let me break it down.

A single Nigerian lady who is legal in the UK and works full-time as a children residential support worker (basically a professional parent). She works Tues morning from 8a.m to 9p.m earning £144 for that shift with free meals, then from 9p.m when the waking night staff has taken over from her. she goes in to the designated room in the house to sleep and she is paid another £56 for sleeping in there as she will be a backup should there be an emergency during the night shift.

She wakes up Wednesday morning, baths, have breakfast and resume work in the house at 8a.m repeats the same circle of the previous day, then Thursday she works from 8a.m to 9p,m and she leaves the house for her home......earning her £544 for the week, expected to show again up next week Tuesday....her gross pay at the end of the month will be £2,176.

She is free on Fridays, Saturdays, Sunday and Mondays......she decides to work for an agency on Saturdays, doing a 12hrs shift at £17/per hour and that is £204 every Saturday and 4 Saturdays is £816.

Combined is £2,992, after the deduction of National Insurance, Income Tax and pension...should be going home with at least £2,300 per month.

She pays rent for £500 (bills inclusive), transport for both work and leisure at £150, groceries and toiletries at £150, phone and Netflix subscription for £35, clothing and footwears £200, hairdo £50, other miscellaneous expenses £100.

Will she not save comfortably?

How many Nigerians will EVER work in the few and far between corporate establishments IN Nigeria

How many Nigerians will EVER have 10 million to their name ?

So you see
And btw; I consider our societal obsession with "being a nobody" to be quite sickening

The truth is most people that JAPA would rather not.

But there is a strong financial argument, which most Nigerians would not realise.

1. Inflation: Inflation is a wealth killer. Inflation at 25% (officially) has killed most people's income. In fact nigerians are spending their future.
2. Currency devaluation: You save all your life all to become poorer with no notice, due to government's badly thought-out policy.
3. Economic mismanagement: The economic mismanagement has no end in sight. Corruption is a cancer. for your info 99% of our elites have their wealth in dollars. Na poor folks just dey suffer - and they don't even know it.

If you are a professional able to adapt, learn and grow - go for JAPA. Ignore these visionless dimwits always looking at the disadvantages. Do it legally.

So you see

You clearly don’t understand what I said. Read again. When I say somebody, I mean a part of society. You and many others are looking at this japa from a strictly financial point of view which is why you associate being a somebody to being financially ok. Where I live, even my maiguard is a somebody, abroad we have many well off doctors, IT ontractors and other Nigerian professionals that are nobodies.

I am not saying don’t japa what I am saying is there are downsides that will only manifest later. Japa is not this rosy picture people are painting especially for those of you who are not even citizens and I am a full fledged British born citizen, I would rather be in Nigeria, there are down sides yes but there are many upsides. For one you are never on your own. abroad no one gives a shit.

My point is life seems to be all about finances until you achieve the finances and then you realize you are in another financial trap abroad without the intangible benefits of being at home. It is only then you appreciate the benefits of being at home.

Like I said to the person above, you clearly don’t know what it means to be a somebody. Your problem is you think being a somebody is about finances. Every village, every street, every church, every what not in Nigeria , you are a somebody. Whether you are the hungry Mai guard, the Uber driver, the bank manager the struggling teacher, the doctor or the governor. As a Nigerian abroad, you are a nobody. This is not about your bank account or whether you can pay your bills.

Everybody is Nigeria is a somebody in his circle or society. Abroad you are a nobody. You won’t understand this because most of you have never lived abroad. By the time most Nigerians abroad realize this, they have spent too much time abroad and can’t come back or adjust, or in most cases they have nothing to show financially for their financial japa abroad and are too ashamed to come back.

for your information, most Nigerians in the UK, with professional jobs earning at least 35,000 pounds save nothing less than 1,000,000 ngn a month,
With the rate of devaluation of money in nigeria, this money is a worth a lot more.
Facts....

there are a lot of Nigerians doing well. Don-t be myopic.

Inflation, economic mismanagement , devaluation will wipe most nigerians wealth... This is facts.
