Greetings everyone, I've been driving for over a year now and I've noticed we don't know how to use headlights in this country even my friend that visited from the US complained same thing.
I don't know if it's selfishness or what but how will someone be on very high beam even when opposite an incoming vehicle, I almost entered a ditch because an SUV beamed on my small Corolla to the point I couldn't even see properly, are there rules set for all these in this country?
God's willing if I don't leave this country within the next 2 years I'm getting a bigger vehicle and I will purposely install massive led lights I will be counter beaming people till they notice their mistake.
I usually try to close early from work and get home b4 it begins to get dark, to avoid the high beam intimidation from big car owners.

The normal night driving is not to try to see the plate number or the make of the on coming car (We always want to see everything...lol) but to concentrate on your own driving. The head lamps are designed in a away that, there is one light focused on your right edge of the road permanently which is where you direct your focus when there is an oncoming vehicle. With this you are in control of where you are driving to whether the oncoming vehicle is using full beam or dimmed light. I've been using this method for my night driving for a very long time now.

Meanwhile, you can beam yours as a flash to alert the person and 80% of the times, they adjust( most are unaware they are on beam).

Your observations are top notch....... you can't try those nonsense in Benin republic...they set their headlights once in a year to normal settings failing to do so attracts fine afterwards

I think the major problems is that our roads are not well lite and every car driver have to put on full light to see properly

Forget headlights, Nigerians do not know how to drive period. They hug the fast lane, they have no lane discipline, they don’t know how to use roundabouts you will see learner drivers and their students in the left lane, so they are taught to be lawless.

As for headlights, if you want to be stopped by the police in the UK just put on your full beam.

Having said that, Most Nigerian low beams can’t see anything at night because their headlamps have been oxidized and have turned yellow and opaque and majority of Nigerians do not know it can be fixed to look and work like new

What the hell are you yapping about?

Most of our roads are pitch dark at night (no illumination with functional Street lights as is the case abroad). Also, most of our roads are riddled with unforeseen pot holes and other obstructions. Not everyone has 20/20 vision like a cat, so what do you expect? When driving on a typical Nigerian road without bright Street lights at night, my headlights are ALWAYS on full beam. It's just inevitable.

You won't believe the community chairman of where I live almost sent me packing.. My community is more like a mini estate with 2 gated entrance, the first gate is closed around 8pm so I have to make use of the main entrance gate to access my street... Behold this man parked is car on the main street right in the middle of the road facing the main entrance gate with full headlight on while gisting with a lady..Firstly that's one of the things I hate while driving on the street at night, when ever I noticed an approaching vehicle on the street is on full headlight I always flash the hell out of them to comport them.. It's so obvious passersby are covering the top of their face just to see road yet these people don't care.. So that very night I change am for the man like we had a beef before...Guess what 😳

The problem is most of our streets are badly lit (I mean there are sections of 3rd mainland bridge without lights) and there are a lot of potholes. That's why most people use 'full' lights all the time

Most people are not intentionally trying to blind other drivers. Them sef just wan see

Like every other things no one is enforcing these things and we are as people continue to glory in madness such that it has become a way of life. Firstly, a lot don’t go to proper driving school to understand and learn the nitti gritty of driving. It’s beyond being able to move and reverse a car. How safely can you drive with considerations for others. Understanding every parts of the car and how to safely operates them. Even me I thought I was a solid driver after driving over a decade in Nigeria with no accident but was a total mess in my first experience outside the country. We compete with headlamps here which endangers others but you’ll get a ban if you try that rubbish in a saner clime. I pray we get there someday

I can understand why drivers use high beam so often. The roads are generally not lit ... or not well lit.... then same with markings ... no road markings to help drivers stay in the lane... then there is the fear of rim bending pot holes that can cause damage to the car and worse ... cause the driver to lose control. If the driver is not familiar with the road... then he has to be on the lookout for bends on the road since there are no warning signs. He has to also look out for wild animals and crazy people dashing across the roadway. Good reasons ... but consideration for other drivers is not in the equation. I have HID lights ... shine like the midday sun. .. can see everything as if it were daytime ... even the oncoming car with his dim lights he flashing looking like Christmas lights ... not realizing that driver is now driving blind and can crash into him. If you fail to dim ... then you are pitting yourself and maybe family in danger and don't even know.

The art of teaching driving is no longer as it used to be
Now anyone jumps into the driving seat takes off and when night falls he uses the lights that are bright enough to see not knowing that there are ethics to the use of lights!
Even driving behind another person you should dip your lights until you over take and is driving on a freeway without traffic coming on the other side! Once another car is approaching the ethic is to again dip your lights until he passes!
Many drive with the full lights to oppress the opposite driver, others don't even know why it's there!
Unless the ethos are brought back the trend will surely continue!

You go first ask, how many Nigerians driving around should be permitted to drive?!!

Driving schools are just there for decoration... Everyone wakes up shows up at the licensing office, and gets issued driver's license without adequate proof of driving skills.

Many Nigerians don't even understand simple or basic road signs.

That horning is annoying and weird.

Person go enter traffic jam with road blocked ahead due to accident, and will still be pressing horn endlessly.

Like, do you want the cars in front to develop wings or simply vanish?!! SMH.

An eye for An eye eventually leaves everyone blind .
You never can tell if you're blessed with a better eyesight / night vision than the person beaming full lights at you .
You never can tell if the other person's car has issues with the light sensor or the person is just ignorant .
But you can tell that dong the same wrong acts to others is not the final solution to the problem .

1. Blame the FRSC who have turned themselves into a revenue generating agency instead of focusing on safe driving awareness.
2. Apart from select places in Lagos for example, how m any road have functional street light? Ijede road street lights only came on at the evening of its commissioning because somebody in government will not do his or work.
3. Being accustomed to driving with full beam started long ago because even when you try to correct drivers, they get angry and curse you out.
