Someone has to come from an angle of humanity or at least pretend to come from taht angle. At the end you realize that people like me would be suitable candidates for negotiation. If diplomacy fails then I can use the majority of my people who are pro confrontation to lead an assault. The watchword here is humanity. If I show it all party will be considerate while dealing with me. To be honest hundreds of thousands of Igbos would volunteer to fight for Opobo and Bonny but from my angle we exhaust all peaceful option.
