Well I don't see anything wrong with stating the tribe of a person who did wrong, the only issue is insulting and demeaning a whole tribe because of an individual's offence, so pls be specific.

Also, we are yet to see your stance on Anti female, insultive, degrading comments and threads, because if you notice, most male tend to term women generally for the offence of one, and as a result of that, most of us rarely comment like before, pls look into it.

By this you wrote here, the next thing we should expect is *justice for oloshos on nairaland*.

What does a tribe of a person have to do with a person's actions? Did you not do social studies in school? Did you not study the agents of socialization as part of your social studies?

Where did tribe come into the picture after the primary agents (family) and secondary agents (schools, religious houses, mass media), or the tertiary agents of socialization (prisons, drug/alcohol/gambling counselling groups)?
A person's "tribe" does not determine a person's actions - most people of any "tribe" won't be criminals, no matter how the data is sliced. Having said that much, it's naive to pretend that "tribe" (or to be more precise, ethnicity) has no influence on how likely a person is to commit a particular sort of crime vs. another, not to speak of where that crime is likely to be committed.

It's important not to sweep such glaring associations under the rug, as doing so makes it impossible to discuss why the associations exist, and what could possibly be done about them. For instance, what meaningful discussion could there be of all the clashes between herdsmen and farmers throughout the country (and much of the rest of West Africa) if it were forbidden to note that the herdsmen tend to share a common ancestry, with all that implies about their cultural norms regarding land ownership and property rights?

The reality of crime in Nigeria is that the numbers of participants in the various types of crimes committed differ drastically by ethnicity, and that this has been so since the 1970s at the very latest. Worse still, the impact of these disparities has wider ramifications than just making certain groups feel embarrassed: witness the raging methamphetamine epidemic in a certain part of the country, all discussion of which has been stifled on here to spare the fragile egos of certain tribal champions. One could say the same about grave desecration, oil bunkering, fraud and many other sorts of criminality.

It's one thing to crack down on people seizing on these crime stories to merely fling tribal insults, but it's going too far to suggest all mention of tribe is now verboten. It means we as Nigerians will be unable to discuss sociological realities which are certainly not going unnoticed abroad. See, for example, the following papers on the subject.

https://www.jstor.org/stable/4006522

https://www.unodc.org/pdf/transnational_crime_west-africa-05.pdf (from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, no less).

https://scholarlypublications.universiteitleiden.nl/access/item%3A2871445/download

What is to be gained by refusing to acknowledge what even the United Nations has picked up on, other than sparing the egos of some people with "tribal" chips on their shoulders?

I don't understand, why do you implement things like this so late? You know most of those tribalist have left here and now prominent on Twitter due to its free speech. They all came from here. In fact, it used to be so rare and shocking to see tribalist on Twitter that anytime a tribalist post went viral, the comment section will be filled with things like, "this is nothing, it's even worse in Nairaland" As if Nairaland was an adobe for tribalist.

Glad you're doing something about it, but it's a little too late.
Tribalism in Nigeria didn't start on the Internet. It didn't start on Nairaland or on Twitter.

Fellow Nairalanders,

I hereby declare a total war against name checkers on Nairaland.

Anyone who draws attention to the tribe of a criminal on a thread about a crime will be banned. This applies regardless of whether they do it overtly or covertly. Every offender will collect a ban because this is regarded as a tribal insult.

The minimum ban period is 14 days. If you have offended multiple times, it's 30 days. If you keep offending, you may be permanently banned.

- Seun Osewa.

PS: I've just made a communication breakthrough with the moderators on this issue. I expect results.
This is the best thing i have seen on nairaland in a long time. I am a veteran here as i have been a member for over a decade and i am not from any of the major tribes, but tribalism is a major problem here especially among two of the major tribes. This has to stop. 15-day ban is too small. there should be permanent ban on first trial.

The word Tribalism is as old as the word Racism , same thing.

Human always find a way to play politics among themselves , so it’s bitter politics

within a race , they play tribalism card

Within same tribe the play religion card, even among each ethnic group, they will still say this one is from a certain LGA

Within same religion they play tribalism card

They will even say, this one is Anglican, catholic or Celestial member

There is no end to it.

That’s human nature
