Bonny and Opobo are Igbo. No negotiation is needed in order to unite the two islands together with the rest of Igboland. Since they belong to the Igbo, what Igbo leadership needs to do is to have a broad dialogue with them, educate them on their true history and origin, hear their own side of the argument, prove to them that their denial of their Igbo ancestry is as a result of false narratives, psychological effects and identity crisis, and then support the proof with (1) early historical documents on Bonny and Opobo, (2) oral traditions from Ngwa/Ndoki people on the formation of Bonny as well as written records on Opobo, and (3) empirical evidence which is the Igbo language.

If Igbo leaders reach out to Bonny and Opobo people in a genuine brotherly manner, I am sure the indigenes of these two Igbo islands will naturally embrace their Igbo identity. Blood is thicker than water.

The Igbo nation will never wage a war in order to unify any Igbo tribe with the larger Igbo populace. And when it comes to Igbo unification, there shall be no referendum because a referendum in this situation is an insulting vote that questions the Igboness of an authentic Igbo tribe and as such gives a section of Igbo people a mischievous chance to decide whether to opt in or opt out of the Igbo nation. Referendum does not determine where a tribe truly belongs.

What Igbo leadership needs to do is to reach out and have a brotherly dialogue with the people of Bonny and Opobo, embrace them in concrete terms as part of the Igbo nation, ask them to disregard the fraudulent political narrative that ascribes their origin to a different nation, engage them in a debate on their origin using linguistic, sociocultural and historical records, encourage them to uphold the Igbo language as a sacred ancestral inheritance which points to their true origin, advise them to ward off any ideology that threatens to supplant the Igbo language with a different language, embolden them to assert their Igbo identity by giving their children Igbo names and by taking the Nze na Ozo titles, and cordially empower them with strategic positions in various Igbo organizations.

What maps are you talking about? Igbo land was not united before the arrival of the white men. Without the white men, Igbo land will still not be united till today, in fact, the Benins might have even conquered the whole of Igbo land by now.

It was the white men that united Igbo land when the eastern region was created on 1 October 1954. There's no time in history arochukwu, onitsha, afikpo, orlu, agulu, enugu, akwa, umuhahia, nnewi, aba, abakaliki, nsukka etc were united under one rulership before the arrival of the white men.
