Coursera, Udemy, and the likes are growing massively. Google, Microsoft no longer require B.Sc as prerequisite to get a job in their multinational companies...but my guy on Nairaland thinks everyone's needs a CS degree. Dumbo!

He just mention he read 10hrs per day for 6 Month, that is called dedication and its will show during your interview i mean someone who know what his doing..You mean the same computer Science gradate who never do any practical in university! it has been said learn transferable skill no one give a damn about your university certificate. its might help during selection only. How can you as a computer science graduate not have any interest in node.js?

Yet, a graduate of another discipline was disciplined enough to understudy it and you still feel you should have an edge over him?

It's here in Nigeria that paper qualifications are revered, reason a certain old man had to fight tooth and nail to forge one for Aso Rock.

The difference between you and OP is what remote employers exploit when hiring workers.

Its about who can actually do it, not who can present a certificate.

Niaraland is originally from Simple Machine Forum (SMF) and was not built from scratch, you just download and use it, I have known Nairaland from when the front-end was still the one from SMF and after it was replaced with Python there is an issue which have not been fixed yet, like when you post some characters in the programing section it turns it to an emoji. If this issue was in a proper company's application and their clients are complaining they will have to get a CS grad in to fix it for them.

If a team of good CS grads should build a forum like this from scratch then it will be touch notch.

Truth is that getting a job as a self-taught person is who you know.

What makes you think self taught computer programmers all of a sudden need connections

Connections ke for people that are so few

What’s the correlation between needing connections to a particular tech stack that it’s bloody rare to find

I'm from a science background however it does not matter.

Web and and software development does not require mathematics, it's just logic. However, machine learning and Data science requires a lot of mathematical principles.

Once a self-taught gets a role through connections, all he does is use node.js or react for an application without understanding the best tool for the job. These are some of the things you learn about in a CS or a programming related degree like SE or Computer Engineering. It's like a self-taught builder that builds a house without knowledge of architecture, structural engineering but just knows how to paint and some other minor stuff and builds a house with it, compared with a builder with a degree in building.

Do you even know the number of people without accounting background that are now chartered accountant and even gotten more international certifications ? Do we now say they got their respective appointment through connections ? My former unit head at access bank came from sciences as a graduate, he became chartered via ACCA when i had been in accounting before him(he can do things i couldn't do then). He now work in the UK in a consulting firm in a senior accounting role without any connections. Please put the Computer Science story to rest. My elder sister is a computer science graduate, but cannot use one single programming language(note: she's very brilliant). So let's appreciate people that had to come into a venture and give their all to achieve greatness like the OP..
