Certain words are interchangeable in some languages. Obviously, the binis borrowed the word from the igbos. Obi-aza....ain't obi an igbo word?🤷🏿‍♂️

Below is a dictionary
The Benin meaning is closer to the real meaning than the igbo meaning.
The Benin kingdom dominating the south south and south east must have been the reason the igbos adopted some Benin words.

Aza is referred to as digits in the Igbo language. But it was popular first known to be used frequently in Benin city by the yahoo boyz

Igbo people sha
I fear who no fear them
They can drag anything draggable
Either they are dragging Lagos with the yorubas, or asaba with the deltans, or words that originated in other tribes as their own. Soon they'll start dragging Malaysia with the owners

You guys are so funny in this online. You don't understand Edo language, yet you're disagreeing with a speaker. There is nothing like account, treasury, etc in Edo language. The word "aza" is what is used since time immemorial. You can easily hear that from aged persons that don't understand English. "De eghe na khan gba aza." Simply means when are we disbursing or crediting, etc.
If the word coincidentally means same in your language, no big deal. After all it won't reduce the price of fuel.

The talk does not even sound Igbo. When did you guys start doing yahoo yahoo? Abeg send me your aza. Does that sentence sound like what an igbo boy would say or a benin boy?

Aza is even an Hausa word, meaning to onload or load something.

Lol! Not wikipedia. Just because you are igbo does not mean you must know every igbo word. Knowledge is universal, just read. Their are non igbos that might know much about igbo than you due to search for knowledge.

Below is a dictionary not wikipedia
The dictionary meaning is giving us the Edo translation man.

I don't think anyone has mentioned the word being related to Yoruba language. FYI there is no letter Z in Yoruba alphabet

You heard it first in benin, does not mean it originated from Benin. It's not a benin word, it's an igbo word.

The problem with this you people's Igbo and Benin arguments is that Igbo and Benin shared words in the past especially the ones that developed in later half of last millenium. Can't you see that Ego and Igho are basically the same thing so Aza Ego and Aza Igho should also mean same thing. It's like arguing if TV or COVID is English, French or Italian.

Aza in Benin is not just a random word. It's our language. It's rooted in Benin language. It's not just a slang. It's the direct meaning of account or "save" in Benin language.

There is what is called language development.

A borrowed word that is infused to form a new word doesn't mean it's an originality.

It's in every language, be it English, Hausa or Efik.

Akara Igwe okwu- Phone number.

Ashawo, agidi, Waka and lots more are all not Igbo words but borrowed word that are infused into Igbo language.

So, AZA is not an original Igbo word.

It's not an Igbo word.

Are you kidding me?
You were all under Benin civilization even some igbo part a people are from Benin.
Edo language was the dominant in those area in the past so there is no sense saying a whole ancient Benin borrow words from igbo.

Aza is an igbo word, which means digits or numbers.
Overtime, it was widely adopted in nigeria as a slang for bank account number

I think saying it's not an edo word was out of ignorance, may be. However, every book I searched pointed to aza being an igbo word. I am yet to see anybody here point to a book that states it's an edo word.
I dropped a dictionary in the thread, pls look it up
