Tinubu Government Raises Electricity Tariff For Nigerians From N66 To N225 Kilowatt Per Hour

The President Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian government has approved N225 ($0.15) per kilowatt-hour tariff increment for Band A electricity consumers in the country.

The Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Musliu Oseni, who made this known at a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday said the increase will see the customers paying N225 kilowatt per hour from the current N66.

According to Oseni, customers in Band A who are those who enjoy 20 hours of electricity supply daily represent 15 percent of the 12million electricity customers in Nigeria.

Oseni further said that the NERC had also downgraded some customers on the Band A to Band B due to non-fulfilment of the required hours of electricity provided by the electricity distribution company.

We currently have 800 feeders that are categorised as Band A, but it will now be reduced to under 500. This means that 17 per cent now qualify as Band A feeders. These feeders only service 15 per cent of total electricity customers connected to the feeders.

“The commission has issued an order which is titled April supplementary order and the commission allows a 235 kilowatt per hour
,”
he said.

Oseni added that the upward review of the electricity tariff will not affect customers on the other Bands.

For context: using N1,300 = $1

This N225 naira per KPH is about 17 cents per kilowatt hour. The minimum wage in Nigeria is N30,000 monthly

North Dakota pays about 10 cents per kilowatt hour. Minimum wage in North Dakota is $7.25 per hour (N1.3 million naira monthly).

Texas pays about 15 cents per kilowatt hour. Minimum wage in Texas is $7.25 per hour (N1.3 million naira monthly).

Tinubu is a plague that has befallen this nation. Leaving in its wake hunger, starvation, high costs of goods and services, inflation, etc.

They steal like tomorrow no dey. Subsidy proceeds are being embezzled. They pad budget and collude with the MDAs to bypass TSA just to loot. All the few things that will benefit the common man, they will take it away. What a government.

This group of persons will be unaffected by the tariff increase as you wrongly assume.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) says the increase in tariff will only affect customers enjoying 20 hour power supply across the country.

It said the hike would only affect Band A customers, but not other customers in Bands B, C and D.

Musliu Oseni, Vice Chairman, Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), said this at a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday.

According to him, the commission has approved the increase in electricity tariff paid by Band A customers from N68/KWh to N225KWh adding that the increase will not affect customers on bands Band C.

The vice chairman said that the commission had also downgraded some customers on the Band A to Band B due to the non-fulfillment of the required hours of electricity provided by the electricity distribution company.

“We currently have over 800 feeders that are categorised as Band A, but it will now be reduced to under 500. This means that 17 per cent of the feeder now qualifies as Band A.

“The commission using technology discovered that many of the feeders that the electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) currently brandish as Band A are not meeting the required service and as such.

“The feeders were ordered to be downgraded immediately as a way of protecting consumers,” he said.

Mr Oseni said that customers hitherto classified as Band A customers would not be affected by the rate review.

He said that as part of enforcement mechanisms to ensure that areas affected by the review get the 20 hours supply, DisCos have been mandated to set up rapid response teams in locations where the feeders are located.

This is even worse. This was the case many years ago under NEPA when wealthy people used to pay them to supply electricity to only those who can pay higher

Is this not taking Nigerians back to the old days of rich man vs poor man?

This is even worse. It clearly says poor man will never enjoy electricity anymore in Nigeria, because electricity will now be given to people who can pay higher
"Poor man" has never enjoyed electricity, they have only benefited from dirt cheap power. If you must enjoy, prepare to pay a premium cost.

Provide new jobs before you choke the poor to death with Tariffs removal.

Create jobs with Livable wages ? We know you want to generate revenue like the kidnappers too are collecting ransom.

But, differentiate yourselves from kidnappers by equally creating jobs for the citizens. Getting to 1 year in office, Tinubu cannot boast of creating 1 million jobs in a country of 300 million people.
Thats why we will continue to have increased social vices. The citizens need livable wages. Removed subsidy in forex, Removed subsidy in petrol, now you want to remove subsidy in energy tariffs !!
Please do not remove subsidy on being alive in Nigeria. Provide jobs, even if the jobs are minimum wages. Political appointments do not count as job creations.
Job creations should cut across parties, religions, tribes....we should see mass hiring.

Employment should supersede revenue generation.

Compare with NITEL and the GSM revolution.
As long as you’re designated class A or B or C, whether you receive 0 or 24hrs, you’ll pay the higher cost regardless. Big Scam!

Poor man enjoys electricity in developed countries and pays the same as rich man. The government even gives tax breaks to poor people in other countries

This government wants to finish Nigerians
