PART 2

I stared at the drug for a long time.
My hands were shaking.

It wasn’t an ordinary medication.
It was a contraceptive.

My heart sank.

I checked the name again. I Googled it.
There was no mistake.

This was not a drug you take by accident.
This was not a drug you take once.
This was a decision.

Suddenly, everything started making sense.
The years of waiting.

The prayers.
The hospital visits.

The tests that said “You’re both medically fine.”
I remembered how she would say,
“God’s time is the best.”

How she would cry in church.
How she would tell people she was trusting God.

All while she was preventing pregnancy.
That night, I couldn’t sleep.

I watched her breathe beside me, wondering how someone could lie so calmly.

The next morning, I asked her gently,
“What is this drug?”

Her face changed instantly.
She tried to laugh it off.

She said it was “for hormones.”
I asked why the doctor didn’t mention it during our fertility tests.

Silence.
Then anger.
She shouted.

She accused me of invading her privacy.
She turned the issue into my fault.

I kept quiet and asked only one question:
“Why?”

She broke down.

She said she wasn’t ready to have another child.

She said she was scared.

She said she wanted to be sure the marriage would last.

She said she didn’t want to be “trapped.”
Trapped?

So what was I?
A sponsor?
A provider?

A stepfather who pays but must not question?
I realized then that the issue was never infertility.

It was choice.

She chose her past over our future.
She chose control over honesty.
She chose fear over commitment.

That day, something died inside me.

Not love.
Not anger.
Trust.

And once trust dies, marriage starts counting its days.
