@babyosis the picture ozo emeka painted about Nigerians living in the US is dis-heartning. assuming one finds an opportunity to travel to the US as a graduate of one of the physical sciences(1st degree) like Maths, Statistics or Physics. What line of action could such a person take to cope in th US? And what bussiness opportunities could one stand to encounter as a new immigrant.

Don't mind that boy
As a science graduate,if you are ready to teach, there is work for you as long as you have papers which is not hard to get for a young able bodied man.
There are many Nigerians girls looking for husbands,I won't advise you marry someone just for green card but you can find someone and marry them for real and get your green card through them.
Schools here are looking for Science teachers especially maths and Physics
I have a friend who studied at ABSU and is now a Biology teacher in a high school
She started out as a substitute teacher and eventually applied and was hired full time without teacher certification
She is now certified and earning over 50K as a school teacher
You can then enroll part time for a masters degree and boost your career while you teach
States like New York are very flexible in things like that
If you are young and get a visa and have someone that can house you a while, come .
Don't let anyone discourage you
It is not a bed of roses but it can be done.people have done it

It is easier if you come as a single man

Am a new bee in Yankee.Been here like going to a year now.I want someone with broad knowledge to reply me and give me advice.I am actually a graduate of English in Nigeria and hope to continue with a masters in Communication. What are my chances of getting admitted and what are also my chances of getting employed after my Masters Program in Communication.I decided to ask this question here because most of my pals are in the medical line therefore they see nothing good and promising outside the health field and I am not cut out for that medical ish cause I believe one can still become a success story even without being in the medical line.Reasonable advice and insights are welcome.

My cousin studied communication here in the USA up till masters level and still got no jobs in that field because they mostly work with media and his accent was a barrier to getting that sort of job
You can't go wrong with medical
That is the easiest way to get a job here
There are many aspects of medical sciences and so much to choose from
You can do respiratory therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, chiropractor, lab sciences pharmacy, optometry etc
You don't have to be a nurse only
I will advise you as a fellow immigrant, don't waste your time with a masters in communication
My cousin ended up going to Law School
If Communication is what you want to do,you must get up to PHD then teach if not it will be hard to get a job in that field
Not impossible but you may not find it easy
I will be honest with you

Getting admission to a university here is a piece of cake
There are so many universities
Once you score well in your GRE you should get a graduate program easily, the hard part is usually the funding

Thanks very much for your candid advice I may give Occupational therapy or Physical therapy assistant a second thought.I actually wanted what I will study and work for some years then come back to Nigeria to join politics. My choice to study Communication is actually because I would love to make a mark there before venturing into politics as a technocrat with experience.

Physical therapy assistant is a good way to start but you must aim to be a physical therapist
With a first degree already,I advise you try to get in for physical therapy directly unless you want to work as a PT assistant while studying to be a PT.
To cut cost start with a community college and knock off some of the courses there then get in for PT.

no one is "scaring" anyone. Grown men and women should not be "scared" by a thread they read. Which is why I provide REFERENCES. Research and disprove my claims if I lay any false fact.

I am Nigerian-american, born in Cali, lived in Lagos and LIVING in America.

Listen to the trash you are offering. He should marry someone for a green card?

If you are ACTUALLY nigerian american (not one of those immigrants who managed to get "papers"wink you would encourage him to look at programs like the Meyerhoff Program for people in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), you will encourage him to take advantage of organizations that offer scholarships to Africans or people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

You will encourage him to apply to NASA, they accept immigrants and provide you a work visa

But no, you, the "one who knows what she is talking about" is suggesting to a "graduate looking for greener pastures" to commit a crime (marry a girl for papers) and risk going to jail.

GREAT ADVICE

Is it falsehood?

So those pictures are NOT REAL? There are no homeless people in america, hobos? I'm making that up?

The hood is not real? I just photoshopped that?

Racism does not exist? Trayvon Martin is a fairy tale?

Africans don't get caricatured for their "accents"? TV ads don't portray Africa as ONE COUNTRY with starving kids?

PLEASE by ALL MEANS, prove me wrong if any of the "claims" I made are false

What is false is LYING to people and telling them America is all skyscrapers.

@babyosisi,thanks for opening this thread.I have been following your post @ ozo_emeka thread.I must say,i really benefited from your post.
I am a graduated from production engineering, university of benin.I am currently waiting for nysc(Nov batch c).Actually,my plan is to come to the US to study for my masters in information or production technology after my service and preferably settling in the US as I vehemently believe I can make it over there .I am currently trying to save up for this move as I struggled to sponsored myself through school back here.
I seriously need your candid advice on how to go about it like
1) cost of schooling in the US atleast affordable for the struggling type like me if you know what I mean grin..
2)Do I stand a chance as I am a footballer and also skilled in computer hardware, software repairs and maintenance.
Thanks and Godbless as I await your anticipated response with all pleasure.

Disregard that trump of "why theatre arts"

NY is a THRIVING ground for those in theatre arts. There are successful Nigerians in the arts that RESIDE in NY.

PRIOR to coming to the US look up Schools and their requirements. Get in touch with them and make sure you are accepted to a school. Doing so automatically qualifies you for a student visa.

Juilliard is an excellent art school
Art Institute of NY
Columbia
CUNY
SUNY Oneonta

be prepared BEFORE you come here.

The tribalism in Nigeria is a million times worse than racism
Racism can be grounds for dismissal at a job and colossal lawsuits, tribalism in Nigeria is the order of the day
It is entrenched in the code of conduct,it dictates who gets admission to a university and who doesn't
Who gets a job and who doesn't
Your tribe dictates when you get promoted in the military etc
It up even determines who rules the country
Can you beat that?
As we speak a group called Boko haram is slaughtering people solely for their religion and you speak of discrimination
What is worse than that?
If you want to see a real hood go to Nigeria
85% of people live in places worse than any hood in the USA with no flush able toilets or drinking water so what exactly is your point young man?

"Tribalism is a million times worse" Where are your sources? Citations? References? Or are you just assuming in your "thick skull" that it should be so SINCE you THINK SO? I gave you facts, please support your BROAD claims with FACTS

Colossal lawsuits, you mean like the Trayvon Martin law suit that ended up with...Zimmerman acquitted? Oh yes, of course the justice system in the US is VERY VERY fair.once you get racially profiled you will get GAZILLIONS of dollars in compensation - OH YES! Lie to them.

Boko haram is slaughtering for religion, and you don't have psychos who do so in America in the name of the Lord? The CT shooting? Oh, of course you are FALSELY encouraging immigrants, so why mention that to them. Afterall, AMERICA IS PERFECT!

85% of people live in worse places? LMAO WOW the way you COME UP with your MAGIC numbers. Citation? References? I am waiting for TANGIBLE thoroughly researched EVIDENCE

You and the guy who claims magnet research is science, I don't know who is worse. I guess it's a nigerian thing huh, not having concrete facts

What facts did you give?
Pictures of abandoned buildings are facts
The average American family makes about 50k a year
What does the average family in Nigeria earn?
The so called poor people in ghettos drive cars, dress well, have water and electricity 24/7 and get food stamps from the government, free milk for their babies and free health care called Medicaid, help with heating their homes, subsidized housing and some free housing
What does your average poor person in Nigeria get?
Nothing
Most people in Nigeria are poor and struggling to eat and when they are sick they die of treatable diseases and call it brief illness
Most graduates are jobless
If you argue with those facts then you are talking from your a$$
You think Nigeria equals Lekki

You may want to educate yourself on the law that set Zimmerman free
Many white people have killed fellow whites and were set free by that same "stand your ground rule" in states like Florida

ozo_emeka: I am not frustrated silly.

I am ALREADY in an Ivy league. Can you say the same about yourself.

Look up NASA, I'm sure google works on your end.

To borrow from your words "America has been good to me and good to many people I know "

If people Migrated to Nigeria solely on the BEAUTIFUL houses they saw in Movies, wouldn't they be making uninformed decisions?

Come on, PMS can't make you reason so low can it?

Stupid liar

Which Ivy League school are you in?
In your dreams
Can someone with your mentality get into a first tier university let alone ivy league
You will be lucky to be accepted into Bowie state university
Who dash monkey banana
My husband is a proud graduate of the finest of them all and my child is in one ,a prestigious one for that matter so ivy league is not an unreachable place in my household.

Reading is fundamental, if you could read you would see the PLETHORA of facts. Not this magic wonderland you are spewing on this thread.

Stand your ground that was motivated by what factor - come on say it, you are a smart girl..

Visit a library close to you and ask for history of racism in america, perhaps that will make you more of an american by enlightening you.
