dypo: Another subject I find interesting are the warriors in ASOIAF. If you were to list the greatest warriors - dead and living - what would that list look like.

There are not much warriors in the real sense of the word. Rather, what we have are people who have been hyped because of their tactical nous and strategies and for winning wars. Not a lot of people fought more than a few physical battles.

For those who actually fought one and survived (and not merely by reputation) I'd name
Victarion Greyjoy
Sandor Clegane
Brienne of Tarth
Jon Snow
Arya Stark
Tyrion Lannister (Yeah, he actually fought a lot of physical battles when you think of it)
Sir Duncan Tall from "Tales of Egg and Dunk"

Warriors by reputation
Jaime Lannister: because he lost all the battles he ever fought in the book. The only one he won was against Eddard Stark and that was cos Ned was outnumbered. He has reputation though. Every character (including himself) is always waxing lyrical about his fighting prowess but the one serious fight he had with Brienne ended with a defeat.

Robert Barratheon: By the time the book started, Robert was a shadow of his old self. He was reputed to be a fierce warrior (Battle of the Trident and all) but for all of that, we didn't actually see him fight any battle except all those ones from memories of other characters.

Ser Gregor Clegane: Known as "The Mountain", Sir Gregor has one of the highest warrior reputation (though of the evil kind) in the whole seven kingdoms. Unfortunately, the only battles this evil warrior fought ended with him losing. He lost against Sir Loras Tyrel at the "Hand's Tourney" in book 1 and against Oberyn Martel (losing your life because of a fight you won does not make you fearsome does it?)

Eddard Stark(?): The Starks are known for being hard, cold and honourable and I guess Eddard is as Stark as they come. We didn't get to see him do much physical battle except against Jaime Lannister (where he ended up with a broken leg), but The Tower of Joy and other long gone battles give him some warrior reputation. Don't forget there's a story of him and his trusted friends facing the "Hallowed" Kingsguard containing some famed Westeros heroes with only him and Howland Reed survived that battle.

Ser Barristan Selmy: He's a famed and celebrated hero of the Kingsguard and a hero-worshipper of Sir Duncan the Tall. But for all his famed prowess we didn't actually see him fight that many battles. The battles he did fight in the service of Deanerys Targeryen were against foes he should normally be defeating, maybe this is because he hasn't enjoyed a lot of Screen/POV time. I'm tempted to include him in the real warrior list though.

Worthy Mentions
Syrio Forrel
Loras Tyrel
Ser Bronn of the Blackwater
Stannis Barratheon
Tormund Giantsbane (?)

There is more and I'll update this post later.

moski5: judging from the excerpts I've read so far
Dorne remains as cautious as ever d sand snakes r just to send correct info n work wit d Religious army if possible

The second sons r in need of Tyrions wits
.
Victarion helped win d Battle The Bold is fighting

My real annoyance with G Martins is his style of writing he doubled back twice just to show us happenings from another point of view utterly unnecessary n thereby prolonging d book n The Character Pate whom he killed in I think a Twow then introduced him as Sam's "colleague
I don't think the Pate part is doubling back. Pate was killed before Sam's arrival, by a faceless man (evidently Jaqen H'ghar) posing as an alchemist, who then took on his face and identity.

So Pate, Sam's" colleague" is actually a fraudster faceless man on an undisclosed mission.

hmmm... Nice list... I wouldn't call Arya a warrior yet though. Robb Stark is more like it. Never lost any battle.

There's Bloodraven (Brynden Rivers) with a valyrian steel sword and a weirwood longbow... The real hero of the first Blackfyre rebellion. From The Sword Sword (Tale of Dunk and Egg #2)

There's also
Baelor Breakspear Targaryen
Maegor Targaryen
Daemon Blackfyre (black dragon)
Bittersteel (black dragon)

that's what makes Martin a genius writer. He rarely writes any detail for nothing. He doesn't state it, he implies it mostly. How well you enjoy it depends on how much you are able to read between the lines and connect dots.

Reread that scene where Jaqen changed his face before Arya, and note the description of the new face. Then read the prologue (can't remember which book it was) where Pate got killed and note the description of the alchemist.

I think that at the very least Robb should have expected some kind of revenge from the Freys. He was just as naïve as his daddy and I find that irksome. King or not, honorable toward his woman or not, he should never have taken his followers and allies for granted. And he should have been the most suspicious son of a gun from when he put on a crown till he went to that wedding.

I guess I'm saying he got what was coming to him. And I say that wishing that every single Frey dies of dysentry + ebola + HIV/AIDS + the black death. It's a meanass thing to sneak up on someone like that. I hate sneaky. I hope the Great Other gets them.

Lyanna + Brandon? Beyond gross! The Stark family is supposed to be stainless! Their only flaw is their terrible naïvety.

Ebola and Dysentery? Bros please have some mercy.

As for Brandon+Lyanna, don't be too surprised with that story arch oo. Incest is not unheard of in ASOIAF ooo. Tageryen, Lannister, and that old wildling guy (Gilly's father).

definitely the most hyped, though he both lost the battle for the crown and died. His sword though... I wonder what Martin meant by "the heart of a star." Hope it isn't the Stardust movie all over again.

while praising Jaqen for being the gentlefacelessman that the alchemist wasn't. After reading the Pate part, I was like "stupid cowardly long-nosed crook." Went back to read a bit about Jaqen to compare killing methods, and got to that place where he changed his face before Arya and... shocked

Lol.

I'm not quarreling that it is there in the story. It just doesn't seem to agree with the Stark character.

Eddard And Howland Reed probably cheated before they could kill the guy even Jamie reveres him.

Yes, you are right. Reed is bannerman to the Starks. He, however, did not move out of Wesatoros. Rather, the story has not yet reached him. I expect we will be hearing from him before long.

Please someone should tell me the page where u hav the Jagen Hager's Face-changing description. I need to discover the similarities between him and the murderous Alchemist.

Arthur Dayne knighted Jamie. Why wouldn't Jamie revere him? I don't think Ned cheated, it probably was just an unbalanced fight. It took an additional Howland to save Ned and turn the tide on Arthur. Even the legendary Azor Ahai would at some point be overwhelmed by numbers.

Em... I can't remember much about Howland Reed (or maybe not much was said about him), but I think the Reeds live in an isolated part of the north (I'm not too sure where), and from there he sent Meera and Jojen to Winterfell to pledge support for Robb and they met Bran. Unless I'm mistaken, he was also to feature in Robb's post-Red-wedding move against Casterly Rock. He seems to me to be the missing link somewhere. I wonder what Martin is up to.

one thorough reading of all 5 books. Reread of all prologues and selected POVs, and several references from time to time. I plan to do another thorough reread soon though. Just that I'd hate Martin if TWOW is not out by the time I'm done.

Saw this somewhere online and I felt I should post.

Game of Bones Is the Best Halloween Costume in All of Westeros

A dog who fights for bones cannot afford to lose to the other dogs.

That's not the case for the costumed pups in Game of Bones, a tribute to Daenerys Targaryen and her baby dragons

The set was created by the dogs' humans, Samantha Watt, Cynthia Martin and Dorothy Barnard of Dallas, Texas. The trio spent two months creating the Game of Thrones-themed costumes, complete with mini dragon eggs and an Iron Bone Throne fit for a Khaleesi.

"We try to be topical and chose a theme with a lot of detail (one reason we didn't go with OITNB), so we have a lot to work with. I think we picked our theme this year in July," Watt told Mashable.

The dogs are all owned by the three ladies. The two pugs, Blossom and Phoebe, are Martin's, Sugar the English Bulldog is Dorothy's and Louis the Frenchie is Watt's.

Watt says that Martin, her mother, is a talented seamstress who handled the costumes, and Dorothy molded the eggs by hand, but the throne was the biggest undertaking.

The bones were carved from foam and covered with bondo resin and drywall mud, then painted until they achieved the iron look.

The dogs participate in two big costume contests in the Dallas area: Bull-O-Ween and Pug-O-Ween, both of which support local rescue organizations.

Last year, they won both competitions with a Breaking Bad theme.

When she's not making elaborate dog scenes, Watt spends the rest of the year making Etch A Sketch art, which you can check out on Instagram.
