@intending Elpaso peeps, please feel free to explore Ramada or other accommodation. Intown was cheap but the service provided could have been better.

The Internet continued to be crappy till I left. When i day crappy, i mean it is like Internet in Nigeria in 2009. So Yea, our current naija Internet is lightyears better than it (you can't stream common YouTube. .... it is that bad.) and security wise, they leave something to be desired. The only plus side is the support you get because there are alot of Mommas.

For those at intown, when you have your baby, ask them at the reception if you have a letter from the time you get home because of the SSN. The reception had the funny habit of calling when you have a package or parcel but they won't call when you have a letter and the SSN comes in the form of a letter. It usually arrives in the first week.

Hope this helps someone. Cheers!

Hello good people,

I am new to this forum. Quite and interesting platform. I am considering going to the US to have my baby. I have contacted and finalized agreement with Dr Z of Oak Bend Medical Center, but I really need a nearby and affordable extended stay place for accommodation. Can anyone who has used this doctor and hospital or is still there give me tips on nearby accommodation to his clinic and the hospital.

NB: I have seen people being chided for not reading thru the thread, I have gone through and I keep seeing Highway6 popping up, I checked it online and it seems expensive. Anymore options pleaseeeeee.

Thank you.

Congrats!
Yes Maryland/DC/VA is expensive.
You should prob have at least 10k but could be more.
I think the price you got for Shady Grove + Dr is good if it is 10k total

Here are 3 options which are a bit cheaper than the typical DMV prices but still expensive compared to ATL/TX/Chicago popularly used my Nairaland mamas.

These are estimates based on standard stay in hospital

Virginia Hospital Center. I think they offer a small discount. Call and ask
V Delivery: 4400
CS: 6400
Epidural: 1200
C section anaesthetic: 850
Dr Fee - Dr Tchabo (renowned Cameroonian Dr) - discounted self pay rate - 3000 for V, 3300 for CS

Ann Arundel Medical Center. They offer 2% discount lol
V Delivery: 5617
CS: 7787
Baby Acc Fee: 2000
Anesthesia: 1000 (estimate)
Dr Rogers: discounted self pay rate 3000 (this is the lowest priced OB that delivers there. You can find his contact on their site)

Inova Alexandria - Thanks @aye88 for the recommendation
This is the only hospital I know in DMV that offers significant discount for Self Pay.
Prices below are after discount

V Delivery: 3701.43
CS: 5292.54
Baby: 1290.06
Dr Ansera: 3000

I also heard PG Hospital is relatively cheap but it depends on how picky you are in terms of service and environment. The reviews are not great.

All the best. Pls google for contact info of all parties. Also make sure you ask as many questions. Due to the fact that most DMV hospitals do not have packages, billing is not so straight forward.
Also check out the attached spreadsheet by @aye88

Sezbaby:
Hi All
Congrats to all the new moms, successful POEs and expectants! smiley
I'm a first time mom and really appreciate all the support from this forum. I dunno what I'lld have done without you guys.
I was gonna go to Gwinneth ATL b4 but since I have family in Maryland, I've decided to go there instead.
A friend recommended shady grove medical centre and a Dr. Yu. I have been in touch and all in all, we're looking at about $10 - $11k in bills.
I however think its too expensive and would like to explore other options.
So to all in the house, information on Maryland hospitals, their rates and user experience(as per delivery oo) is urgently needed abeg as i want to apply for my visa asap.

Thanks in advance

Hello My People in the house:

I got an email from Dr. Fagbohun, I want to know if I still need to book an appointment with Oakbend Medical Center and to have letter confirming that my wife would be coming to give birth at their hospital to add with the Dr. Fagbohun's letter.

Please throw more light on this for me, I will apply from Doha, Qatar and here the VO will check and scrutinize all doc thoroughly, that is why I need more information to convince them.

Thanks, am awaiting your response.

Congrats to all new parent in the house.

God Bless,
Its better if you can get a letter from oakbend med centre, but that said, some american hospitals will not correspond via email for appointments booking, dont know if oakbend does,if they dont, then you are good with Dr Fagbohuns email, since it has an attachment with a compprehensive breakdown of both doctor and hospital fee. Good luck.

Thanks alot. This really helps.

@isysleek

I visited His grace lodge during my stay in Elpaso. I can't say for sure what the rooms are like but it's a house with bedrooms. I think you will share amenities like kitchen and the sitting rooms. But it's a lovely house in a safe residential area. However, it is some distance away from the hospital and other places. But the owner provides chauffer services though i am not sure how it runs and he is a really nice family man.

Sorry i can't contribute much. Hope this little helps.

Plus are there tips one can use during labour/pushing phase that would help avert tear? Tanks

Thanks IyawoToBe
All you need is just to practice your breathing techniques and also follow the counting pattern with the doctor when asked to push.

hi Fue1,

PLEASE WHO IS DOCTOR Z? Is it Ezekiel? Thank you

fue1:
@ everyone.

Hello!

After reading some of the earlier posts, I agree with Yefa.

I am currently at richmond Houston using DR Z. And Oakbend medical center and i must say the service is very good.

I started by getting the contact of Dr Z and asking for a comprehensive breakdown of the process before applying for my visa.

This was what i was given

Doctors requirement:
Initial visit $190
Lab $270
Vaginal delivery $2200

Hospital fee (oakbend)
Hospital charge $2300
Pediatrician $320

Other fees
Anesthesia for epidural in labour $850

Estimated COST for vaginal delivery $6130

And C/S can be $6630.

There is also a $150 scan fee.

This is the exact price i told the VO, the US immigration officers upon arrival and the value I just paid on 02/Dec/2014.

For me this place offers a great price plus Dr Z and his team were very supportive and quite professional.

The VO most people come in contact with, just want to see your financial capability to handle the delivery bill and accommodation requirements plus they will ask you straight forward questions and would like HONEST straight forward answers because they can detect inconsistencies.

Another option for people considering Maryland (DMV)

jekye2001:

Hello house, hope we all are doing great. Had my baby in June 2013 in Maryland ....I M WRITTING THIS LATE COS I COULDNT LOG ON...all thanks to Vivian who has turned out to be my sister from another mother...double vee as i refer to her as being a blessing. i gave birth in Maryland though the plan was to use MIHS Phoenix, double Vee has given me all the guidance needed. I arrived the USA USING Baltimore washington International,,, my people it wasnt funny,at port of entry, the officer welcome me , she asked some questions...first one off guard was...are you expecting, i told her yes, she said STEP ASIDE...she took me to her supervisor, i was worried oooooo..make i no pretend. they kept me in that room that we watch on BOAREDR SECURITY...FOR LIKE 45MINS, ...OBSERVATION DON BEGIN: ATLAS, SUpervisor called me, so many questions..these are the few i can recall...where do you work? are u on leave? when u applied for the visa , y didnt you say u were pregnant? that one i answered fast,...please lets count, i was not pregnant when i applied for the visa. i was asked how much i had on me?(since i filled the cash declaration form) he asked i bring out the cash, counted to make sure it was complete....he now said,LET ME ADVISE YOU, COLLECT ALL YOUR RECEIPTS COS YOU WOULD BE ASKED AT ANY TIME DURING YOUR REVISIT;;;AFTER ABOUT THREE HOURS I WAS ALLOWED INTO BALTIMORE....

any questions welcome by me... double vee..thank you plenty all nairaland people..keep raising the flag oooooo.

I used Dr Chaudry in Cheverly..his price was 2,500. nice man, he has good staff..Alicia to be precise..during my last weeks trimester..dr GAVE GREAT ADVISE..I USED THE Prince George county Hospital..went in thru emergency, gave birth there successfully thru normal, i did not sleep in the hospital since that was my third baby, other two na for naija i born dem o
HOSPITAL BILL IS 4,700 DOLLARS SO the total is 7200...i didnt use epidural o cos of this bill though i was induced....

getting the american passport was easy for me cause i waited till i got the SSN , WENT TO THE PASSPORT OFFICE IN WASHINGTON DC TWO WEEKS TO MY DEPARTURE DATE ..GOT IT WITH 172 DOLLARS IN TWO DAYS IN THE HOUSE....THE NIGERIA PASSPORT WAS FASTEST..GOT IT SAME DAY, THE SUPERVISOR THERE...naija embassy na better woman, she has low cost..gave me my son's passport same day..it cost me swglobbal, visa fee..some extra dollar, cant recall the figure...
