I have been in Nigeria for quite a while and it beats me how a people can be so insensitive, attention seeking and never know when to give up.

I have always tried to stay away from political discus especially when it is difficult to be objective or expect that the other party tries to be, no matter how little.

Oby Ezekwesili is one woman who has had her chance to build Nigeria, how much she was able to impact on the polity is a topic for another day.

She obviously, like most of us, wanted to hold on and remain in the political space and especially considering the fact that her party was still in power. But Uncle Joe wouldn't have any of that and that explains her fighting from the other side (very understandable)

She had done her best in trying to ridicule the Presidency especially using her bring back our girls campaign. Not my business.

She had openly identified with the opposition. Understandable

But she doesn't have the right to choose whom our heroes are.

Our lives are not lived on the TV and might not worth anything to her other than a veiled advocacy which of course would be belated. So we choose our hero who made sure nothing happened to us.

After the conduct of the Presidential Elections, a lot of us, Corp Members, Market women, Christians living in the north (even where they are majority) slept with our eyes open, looked back with every step thrown, left our known residents, closed down our businesses, avoided a lot of places, vowed not to be part of of the elections anymore due to the obvious danger should GEJ do what Oby and those she worked for do just to win an election.

Our lives were in danger, our investments stood the risk of being torched by irate un enlightened followers who do not understand. How a democracy works.

But this man decided not to let all these happen, he didn't use the tools at his disposal to ensure he remains there and when he lost, he didn't cry on national TV wiping up sentiments and threatening to bring down the heavens, he didn't wait for people to act first and cause mayhem which off course would have been replied, he acted first.

He conceded defeat and on time, no protests that would have led to the loss of lives, all the fears were allayed and the known violence that would have followed if the result turned the other way averted.

So GEJ is my hero, and that of a thousand folks whose being and well-being were threatened.
He doesn't have to be yours given that you were made irrelevant in his government, he doesn't have to be yours since your loyalty unquestionably lies the other way, he just doesn't have to be your hero but don't tell us whom our hero should be.

A hero, according to Wikipedia, is

"a character or person, who, in the face of danger and
adversity or from a position of weakness, displays
courage or self-sacrifice"

Another source defines it thus:

"a person who, in the opinion of others, has heroic
qualities or has performed a heroic act and is
regarded as a model or ideal"

Unless Ezekwesili has a different definition of a hero different from the above, then I beg to disagree with her.

For promising to conduct a free and fair election without interfering in the process, and keeping his words: that makes him a hero

Think for a second what would have become of last Saturday's election had the president lost his calm after the card reader failed to capture him and kept him waiting in the sun for over thirty minutes, moreso when his party had advised against the use of the card reader. Had he stormed out of that polling booth, that would have been the end of election that day, and the consequences could only have been imagined. For maintaining his cool in the face of that, he is a hero

For calling GMB and congratulating him(something GMB never did in 2011 and can never do), and thereby averting "goons and baboons" being soaked in blood, he is a hero

For telling his party not to bother contesting the outcome of the election in court to avoid distracting the incoming president, he is a hero

Hate him as much as you choose to do, Mrs Ezekwesili, you cannot take this glorious moment from him. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has set a standard for democracy, not only in Nigeria, but also in Africa. The man is a true democrat and, indeed, our national hero!

Or is your memory impaired that you suddenly forget how much name callings Jonathan endured in the hands of APC? Neither OBJ nor GMB can tolerate that. The history is there for a proof.

Like macdokwe rightly wrote, Jonathan need not be our hero solely premised on his governing acumen to hike Nigeria to shangri La. Yes, i fess up he wasn't so much a vibrant leader. Yes, he was a political Mikel, slow to take action. Yes, he didn't very much transmogrify the country into the Nigeria of our dream. (even though i roundly don't think any Nigerian erst-while president had bettered what Jonathan achieved in his tenure even when a section of the nation was war-torn).
But, the act of sacrificing his ambition on the cross of conceding defeat that no Nigerian should perish but lead a peaceful life, fits into the matrice of an hero.
If one thinks it is so easy a decision to concede defeat after an election lost (which was mired with malpractice) and even going as far as felicitating with the opponent in Nigerian body polity, then one should ask the specious angel Sai Buhari the president-elect who after losing an election forwent in hard and made a very unsavoury comment which many believed saw the emergence of insurgence in the North.

We have the right to pick who fits into our perspective of a hero and A great many Nigerians(including myself and some buhari supporters) felt and still feel Jonathan falls within the armbit of a hero.

These people, stop defiling everything that comes to you by chance and stop insulting heroism. Jonathan only chose freedom and live over incarceration and death that awaits him if he had not conceded peacefully. Physical evidences of violence reported to ICC by opposition party has gravely implicated him. Video and reminder of Gbagbo and Simone by OBJ was reoccurring in his brain.
i don't normally reply people that talks like retards but there are thousand and one to hold on to power if GEJ wanted without using military he would have just split Nigeria without war so exhibiting your mad tendencies is uncalled for

For your to get the gist of her discuss you have to disabuse your mind. Lets wait for the report on gej's administration after may29 to see how much of a hero he realy is.
For me gej does not fit in the mould of a hero. His policies and actioons leading to the general elections were very unpopular. Even in the face of defeat he was still desperate and hungry. He neve wanted to leave. Forget about what you see on the surface.

Hitler, dracula, mandela, dr adedevor, lincoln, fela, abacha, enahoro and even anini are all heroes in their own respect.

No qualms in having a hero but the point is ur hero may not be my hero. And we miss the point when we insult others because they dont share ur view.

No doubt that the act was heroic but that for me does not qualify him as my hero. He created the tension and failed to act when necesary.

Pls make ur point without insulting anyone. Lets be civil.

You are a cretinous fuuktard for insinuating she does not see your cretinous hero as a heros BECAUSE he made her irrelevant in his government.

She does not see him as a hero because she is, unlike fuuktards like you, an incredibly bright woman who understands that doing basic right things should not be worship.

Conducting yourself appropriately and performing your basic duties are not heroic things to people at her intellectual level. Worse still, when you have failed and destroyed many things prior to that singular act.

GEJ is a hero due to the simple act of calling Sai Buhari for calming tensions all over the nation, Africa and the world at large. Be informed that days to the elections, the US government sent their planes waiting in Ghana to fly into Nigeria should in case of any crisis. What GEJ did will come to fruition after his tenure and you all will be alive to witness the respect he will command within and outside this country. And for Oby, she should be ashamed for letting OBJ hold her waist and almost kissing her in public, a married woman who is fighting for chibok girls displaying how immoral she is.
