jethro2:I know why your saying that, your not any different from many Nigerians I have come across and your statement isn't any different from what they all say. Why you all keep having this mindset I wonder why. Everyday, I kick rotten police, Kai, lawna, nurtw etc asses. You have a valid point about spending ones energy on making money, but I am not willing to let those group of Caesers make illegal & unfair profit that keeps making the price of food expensive. Moreso, I find it repulsive that someone from Nowhere comes to my own Town and ask me to conform to a foreign rule. My great, great, great grand parents started out in Lagos since 1846 now we have presence & known very well in Lagos and Nigeria, so understand how I feel when someone tells me to pay owo ile in my own town. You won't accept that if the show was run in your own town, majority of these Union chairmen or members aren't Lagosians. I hope that makes my situation more clearer to you, my forebears even owned slaves in their time in Lagos to show you they had grip in the affairs of Lagos and their community. Many thanks |

omode2:@Omode2 that's my exact point with @jethro2 she is making me have a belief she's not teachable, because I have raised it severally with her that our govt has a key role to play in all of these happenings. However she keeps trying to beat me down, even calling me names. If the govt plays its part, like the govt does in advanced countries, we that are Diasporians just like other enthusiast whom beliefs in walking the entrepreneurship talk, we would fair better in feeding our Nation, other than spending forex on food importation and consumption. If one has a BSc, MSc or a PhD without hands on experience they have to come back to the basics when it comes to hands on experience. In developed countries people like @jethro2 have more value because her BSc, MSc or PhD would make her go far at monetizing her farm operations other than being a small holder farmer, these degrees make people academicians with no real life production environment challenges or unexpected outcomes which class room based theories won't have an answer to. Truth be told Mile12 market has to be shunned, its annoying dealing with illiterates, they hinder vision and progress of any project. Moreso, educated illetrates whom can be worse off, than majority of stack illetrates whom run small holder farms, are now the majority of whom we find governing us and determining our future. We need to think outside the box repetitively to break the jinx of lack of evolution in the things handed down to Nigerians and how we have always run businesses. As I speak Mile12 is on the verge of either been demolished or burnt down by the Lagos State govt, they are tired of it being an eye sore and they need make use of the space for an international luxurious bus park, with hotels, eateries, coach park etc. The case is in court, we collectively have to think outside the box by either coming together to find other markets to sell Tomatoes to or create a new modern market within Lagos. But @jethro2 needs to stop being a little arrogant, she's doing a great job, but that doesn't mean a lot of people here giving her all the applaud can't do better than her with our years of experience running international businesses, within wide markets and running complex operations. Yet we are humbling ourselves to want to learn from her. Our model could far surpass yours by the time we combine the ground work of learning crops of our choice within 90 days having all needed infrastructure in place improvising to monetize with least investment. We spend time all forums pertaining to agriculture to get 1st hand information on major challenges been faced, so we are in the know on what to expect and mechanisms we have to put in place to overcome these challenges @jethro2 spoke about contract farming indirectly, giving out seeds to other farmers, so they can grow inorder to have a big harvest, like a few people highlighted the challenges that would arise out of that and how they would side track her with their shallow thinking. You bet it would happen, they would betray her trust in them because they don't want to cooperate with her and don't want shared prosperity. Guiness Nigeria did the samething with Sorghum, gave farmers everything they needed and told them what they wanted in return. The farmers side tracked Guiness, planted other crops with their machinery and funds. They got frustrated and scrapped the project, then started buying directly from suppliers other than the initial route of outsourcing which brings about shared prosperity. |

jethro2:Your spot on with the above statement @jethro2 they need to stop doing things the wrong way, and calling you when they have problems. The right way to succeed is go to Ago Amodu for hands on Training so you are well equipped before you jump into farming and find out during the 30 days if farming is really for you. You might like how these things sound here on paper or electronically but you might not be emotionally prepared for the work and risk involved. Well done @jethro2 for being exemplary showing leadership |

greenmatorganic:l share your view regarding that Mile 12 as nothing has improved over the years and believe we are enlightened enough to work out alternatives as we cannot just dismiss it that it is impossible. Even in Kenya, some of their markets do have cartels but there are so many alternative markets where it is farmers and the consumers that run the markets. There is an organic farmers market within the upscale neighbourhood of Karen in Nairobi and every Saturday, farmers whose farms have been certified organic, sell their produce directly to the consumers who are mostly expatriates. l have a friend who runs an organic farm and sells there every Saturday, he earns well as no cartel is involved. The market even has a website http://ofmkenya.org/ We the younger generation must be creative enough to disrupt the age-long system that does not encourage farmers but rather, fattens the cartel! |

omode2:Tnx! But stil wold like to knw d cost if any idea |
| Re: Tomato Production And Marketing. Facts Backed With Figures by jethro2(op): 3:39pm On Sep 18, 2015 |
salisy:Cost varies from place to place. Labour, land, inputs and all sort. I will suggest you get close to a practising farmer to get some facts and figures. But there are unpredictable factors such as rainfall pattern, pest and diseases, soil factors, etc. Giving you a figure will be deceiving you. You need to learn the basics before the figures. Its important |

jethro2:Agreed! I'm already into this biz. Just want to expand and my farm is based in the north. I need the figures to help me plan very well |

On daily basis I receive calls, SMS and e mails from those that want to tap from the tomato millions. Yes I called it tomato millions. My people say and I quote "eni to o ba ma he oyin inu apata, koni wo enu ake" Meaning: Rome was not built in a day. Planting tomatoes entails more than 1. Having the land 2. Buying the seed 3. Getting the labourers 4. Have access to water 5. Have farm managers All these are essential but there are lot and lots of facts and basic information that most people dont have. One of the major fact is nobody can farm for you. Yes, I said that. None of the so called expert can predict the amount of sun that will shine, the type and quantity of pest that will affect your crop etc Most of us love to read and hear 6 figures. We have been brain washed with the get rich syndrome And others have learned to tap into that |

Starting from the land clearing. If you got an estimate to clear a land for N10,000. Try as much as possible to budget N25,000 Hidden cost will surface. You either pay or abandoned the project Its your choice Most cases we are forced to pay. After all its minor cost. "We think" Ploughing per acre in my area is N3,000. The operator will do a good job if motivated. "Unreiceipted accounts" He might decide to plough along the slope instead of across the slope. So be prepared for extra dishing. 'Food and water money'. Sure were not budgeted for etc |

YOUR SOIL I stays in a remote village in Oyo State. I work with a lot of farmers on daily basis. The soil in Village A on the right is completely different from the soil in Village A on the left side. Imagine if we now compare Village A to village B? Why compare? " please what can fertilizer can I use? My tomato is dying." The above I got on daily basis. To attend to the question: I need to have the ideas of: 1. What type of soil 2. Did you test your soil 3. Did you treat your soil 4. Is the soil infected? 5. What have you applied and lots and lots. Possibly might need to see the plant It become so hard to predict or prescribe any solution because the background is not known. The farmers becomes perplexed and disturb yet no solution at hand. And money, efforts, resources and time going down the drain. |

My advise and suggestion. Test your soil Most soil test will tell you the minerals and the organic treatment that is present in the soil. The additive that could and need to be added to boost the soil. The type of crop that can survive on that soil. One have details information. Hmnnnnn " what of those of us that can not afford the soil test" Some one is thinking. " well alternative and rural farmers way of treating the soil" 1. Burn grasses on the soil 2. Heat some soil to a very high temperature and spread on the planting area. 3. Cook the soil over a long period of time and spread What ?Burning ?" You are destroying the organic contents" Yes. The organic content will be destroyed. But the nematodes, fungi and some disease carrying pest will be destroyed. Ohhhhh "How do I replenish the soil? That's where your poultry waste, cow dung and neem cake comes in. Get abundant of it to mix with your soil. " You mean I will do this for 10-20acres ??No. You don't need to " So how do I treat my intending 10acres? Don't do big Start small and grow big Do what you can maintain. And gradually build up |
| Re: Tomato Production And Marketing. Facts Backed With Figures by jethro2(op): 10:16pm On Sep 19, 2015 |
The organic contents of your soil really matters. The crop feed on it and builds its strength The higher the organic contents, the higher the crop resistance to disease. The organic contents has the capacity to retain water which your crop can utilizes for longer period. The organic contents also helps in the fruit formation. How do you source Organic Contents? Poultry waste Cow dungs Neem cake etc |

Its advisable for intending farmers to start small. I usually advice quarter of an acre which is 50×20m. If all Good Agricultural Practises GAP is adhered to, a lot can be derived from this. Its not how big but how well. |

jethro2:In my place we say " Oloko ni oko nbere" i.e the farm is ever asking to see its owner. You can never get there and wouldnt find something needed and worthwhile to do. How many are ready to give it what it demands. But if you ask me, what has changed? Nothing. If you cant deploy large funds then be ready to work it out yourself. @Jethro. Keep spreading the word if they will listen! |

The dry season is approaching again. The time for vegetables and tomato planting. Most especially if you have access to water and some irrigation facilities. Please don't jump into farming without having prior practical knowledge. E book/one day seminar will not sustain your farm. Farming is more technical There are lot of issues and challenges that can only be figure out on the farm. Get close to a practising farmer. Understudy him/her for some time. Ask questions. Most of us see the big figures and jump in without acquiring any basic practical knowledge. We got our hands burn severally Farming is lucrative when every good agricultural practises has been strictly adhered to. Learn from other peoples experience and have a bountiful harvest |

Entrepreneur Youth Multipurpose Cooperative How to treat tomato diseases 1. Note symptoms. Diagnose your tomato plant’s problem by comparing its symptoms with descriptions of specific diseases. 2. Treat according to recommendation for the specific disease. Ways to prevent tomato diseases Take steps to keep diseases away or reduce their severity. 1. Rotate crops Many bacteria, fungi, and viruses can survive years in the soil. Reduce incidence when you plant tomatoes no more than once every three years in the same spot. Avoid planting other Solanaceous crops (members of the same family as tomatoes, including potato, pepper, and eggplant) in the same area, too – they are susceptible to many of the same diseases as tomatoes. 2. Improve soil Before planting, add a good amount of compost or organic matter to the home garden to improve the soil. Extra nutrients and aeration grow stronger plants which can resist infection. 3. Plant disease-resistant tomato varieties Many hybrid tomato varieties are bred specifically to resist particular diseases. Plant disease-resistant varieties to have the healthiest crop possible. Tomato disease-resistant codes are listed on seed or seedling packets in capital letters. They include: V = Verticillium Wilt F = Fusarium Wilt N = Nematodes A = Alternaria T = Tobacco Mosaic Virus St = Stemphylium (Gray Leaf Spot) TSWV = Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus 3. Don’t under-water or over-water Keep tomatoes on a regular watering schedule to help them stay healthy and strong. Avoid over-watering which can lead to consistently wet conditions – the perfect environment for many bacteria, fungi, and viruses to multiply. 4. Destroy infected plants If you allow infected plants to over-winter in the garden or if you throw them on the compost pile, there’s a good chance disease will spread to other plants or multiply in the soil. Throw away or burn infected plants. |

Finally I made it to the very last page of a thread on Nairaland. Beautiful piece @jethro2, so much detail and in-depth breakdown of your real life experience. Thank you once again for reiterating the fact that EXPERIENCE IS THE BEST TEACHER and all these one day seminars and skill acquisition workshops are just scams. There's no way one can learn a skill in one day and start a business just like that. Many thanks to all you wonderful Nairalanders for all the love you show here by sharing. @Choiceman, @omode2, @Pavore9, @joive, @securi, @kalusam, @jeffnyson @soloxam, @greenmatorganic and everyone else who contributed to this thread, y'all have no clue how much you've inspired a peasant a communal farmer like myself. God bless you madam @jethro2 and everybody that made this thread worth my vigil...i read through the night page by page "sometimes I go back to read a page again when some issues reoccur". With the kind of access I have to lands at locations nearer to Lagos than Saki I take this up as a challenge!!! But be sure I'll be starting in my small 2plot yard where I live... remmyjay007:Detailed training is very essential and can not be picked up within a day encounter as l always advise people to physically do farm visits and diligently follow up the steps. With a proximity to Lagos which is a very huge market with a population that is even more than the entire population of Cameroon, you are sure of a good market once you get your production and marketing right. |

You are highly welcome. Perfectly said and I quote "Experience is the best teacher" Please take your time in doing a lot of research in your area before sowing a single seed. Rural farmers could be a very big source of information and training. Wishing you success all the way. Lets feed the nation remmyjay007: |
