Abeg make MTN go pay d money; if a Nigerian doing business in South Africa defaults weda deliberately or not, dey too won't hesitate to scapegoat him. South Africa and South Africans do not respect Nigeria and Nigerians enough! However, in terms of CSR, I think amongst telecoms operators in Nigeria, MTN leads d way. People like our own Globacom do nothing for the general populace, dey just dash out monies to entertainers and dia cronies. Globacom doesn't even have a standing scholarship scheme for Nigerians; dia so-called g-bam scholarship is a big lie because I haven't for once met/or heard of a Nigerian undergraduate enjoying Globacom scholarship. Dey are a shame to us. |

UNFAIR Do you even know the offence they commit? For example; kidnappers kidnap your dad and they start to contact your family asking for ransom by calling with UNREGISTERED MTN SIM in which NCC already gave the directives that all unregistered sims should be cut off. Abegi NCC did the right thing because MTN ignorance will cost me, you and the rest. Why didn't NCC fine GLO, AIRTEL, ETISALAT. |

Princedapace:oga ade make we hear word jare...they should face d fine or get out of nigeria useless south Africa company...u kept saying mtn has done so much for this con3, what have they done outside the contract signed with nig govt concerning "social responsibility" who hasn't done so much? All banks, oil companies, telecoms, etc are contracted to carry out social responsibilities b it small or big to wherever they re located...how can mtn alone among four telecoms disobey ncc directives? That's because they believe our govt are useless and they can't do anytin just like how Mtn brother company multichoice bragged that nigeria govt can't do them anytin concerning "pay per view" and the increment on gotv n dstv sub....if mtn can't pay d fine they shouldn't ve done d crime....since they ve done it they should pay d fine #Simple...other telecoms that adhered to ncc directives are not fools ..they showed respect and obedience...Pls stop saying abt d much u said they ve done, it is part of their contract to carry out social responsibilities, other companies too do theirs is it because u don't get to see it on TV? Other telecoms disregistered sims but mtn didn't..to me dis is an obvious action believing notin go happen....#myownopiniontoo |

Sometimes I wonder why some see reasons to defend wrong!? The Country is under trait on security in which one of the escape valves seems to be communication via mobile. Directives properly sent only for MTN to place their priority above ours at the expense of many peoples lives and cost. You prefer their wisdom over ours? Please without us being alive they won't stay in Nigeria. Apart from the penalty, they must be compel to block those lines within 14days. Even though indirectly the end users will bear the cost! |

We get too sentimental about issues. This is a big problem with not just Nigerians, but probably the entire black race. And see how far that has brought us in terms of development. The rules were clearly stated. The fines didn't come out of the blues, and it wasn't directed specifically at just mtn. I think heavy sanctions like this will help corporate organisations sit up and take regulatory bodies more seriously. I feel for mtn but we need to understand that a lot of crimes can be curbed if all lines are duely registered. Kidnappers, fraudsters, cyber criminals, they all communicate through their phones and take advantage of this sim registration imperfection. Sanctions fly around daily. Banks, car manufacturers etc. Pls don't let emotions continue to pull us backwards, let people sit up and do things the right way. We appreciate mtn, we operate on their terms let them operate on ours too. |

Happy to see that someone is thinking in the right direction. Because MTN and DSTV are southafrican companies operating in nigeria doesnt mean we should treat them like shit. Do you know hw much MTN give back to our communities? Do you know how much they pay in taxes? And yet this bleeped up nation believes a fine that is enough to b nigerias annual budget be imposed because they refused to disconnect subscribers. And had it been they did disconnect these subscribers, you wailers will still come out to shout EmptyHEN. MOFOS with no direction |

Not a bad opinion by someone with secondary school knowledge of GSM service providers and how MTN deliberately violated the directive of the NCC. GSM service providers make millions of dollars daily from drop calls and other sharp practices to rip off more than 148 million active subscribers in Nigeria. So, OP, should just talk about what he knows about and leave professional issues to the experts. MTN has escaped penalties for other violations, but the NCC cannot let MTN escape from this one. |

I pity whoever put up this writeup! I was opportuned to go through an article a fortnight ago on one of the dailies regarding different ways through which MTN evades taxes and fails to pay royalties! The method discussed therein is called "Transfer pricing" it involves MTN paying some sums of money in billions of dollars to MTN Dubai a company whose office/ establishment isn't more than a four bedroom apartment in a city, and the article talked about how companies shortchange their countries of operation by siphoning monies due them to some offshore accounts! I think the 1.4 trillion naira isn't anywhere near the billions of dollars that have been moved over the years |

OP abi wetin dem dey call you, the thunder wey go strike you still dey rev. Is this not the same MTN that told us Nigerians that per second billing is not possible until Glo came and showed them as liars and exploiters that they are? South Africa has ridden us long enough, Stanbic is facing its own and DSTV is next, let them not sit up. So much exploitation. They don't want to realise things are changing in Nigeria, can anyone truly say this could have happened under Goodluck Jonathan? There's a new sheriff in town so it's not business as usual. Let them leave Nigeria if they dare, Uncle Damgote or Bros Elumelu are waiting on the side to buy them up fast or even at Stock Exchange floor, me sef I go buy. |

| Re: We Nigerians Are Unfair To MTN by lokonzo78: 9:48am On Oct 31, 2015 |
All you have said is thrash. Nigeria as a country and its institution(NCC) should respect a company flouting the rules? You just didnt get it. Unregistered lines of MTN are currently being used by kidnappers to negotiate ransom from the victims family, making police helpless in their investigations. Is it the first time MTN as a company has been warned for flouting NCC rules? The best MTN can do is to negotiate for payment terms, they should beg NCC to spread the payments of the fine over like 10 years or ask for reduction and pay NOW. First Bank just paid a fine of almost N2b for an offence, even after making corrections immediately. Nigeria market is too profitable for a company to be too big to control. MTN became no1 telecom coy in Africa because of Nigeria market, and must ever be grateful to our people, NCC and Nigerian Government |

Inspectahdeck:. 'SIR', I asked an innocent question just for a marketing research and u think the best thing is to insult me? Well, if u wish to know, I bought my SIM at a more expensive price than yours and I sure do know a lot about network service providers. My earlier response shows I want them to pay d fine. I just don't understand how Nigerians react to seemingly unharmful questions and situations just because we have something to proof. More reason I don't comment on such platforms. Sorry if I offended you. |
| Re: We Nigerians Are Unfair To MTN by Orikinla(m): 9:53am On Oct 31, 2015 |
betrani:. The OP is ignorant. Forgive him. The ignorance of majority of gullible Nigerians is actually the cause of the widespread corruption in Nigeria. |

There is nothing outrageous about the fine. We all cry for a better Nigeria but we can't achieve that when simple regulations cannot be adhered to. The agreement between NCC and the network providers is that failure to deactivate a single sim will attract a fine of N200000. And MTN duly signed and agreed to it. So what NCC did was multiple N200k by number of sim not deactivated. |

Obiwiz: @the bolded! Don't hold your breath forthis. I am sorry to MTN but I soo love this! STANBIC was also issued a fine on Monday. Is this a coincident that all SA companies are being targeted? Well the answer to this, i honestly don't give 2 hoot about. IT HAS STARTED, IT HAS STARTED!!!! ![]() I have always said SA companies & Nigeria should stop & break their false partnership and relationship. IT IS A BIG FUSS!!! THEY BICKER ABOUT THE MOST "STUPEDEST" THINGS ON EARTH. THIS FUSS OF A DIPLOMATIC POLITENESS IS NOT WORTH IT AND ITS COMING TO END. SA COMPANIES MUST CONCENTRATE ON THE REST OF AFRICA, MIDDLE EAST & AGGRESSIVELY DRIVE EURO PENETRATION. MTN IS A LISTED COMPANY WITH SHARE HOLDERS ACROSS THE GLOBE, THE IMPACT TO SOUTH AFRICA/NS WILL BE MINIMUM. MTN NIGERIA WAS NOT PAYING TAX TO SA OR EMPLOYING SANS. ONE THING NIGERIA FORGET ON THE SURFACE IT LOOKS LIKE THEY ARE PISSING OFF SA BUT ALL SA COMPANIES IN NIGERIA ARE LISTED GLOBALLY AND THE MAJOR SHARE HOLDERS ARE GLOBAL PLAYERS. NIGERIA SHOULD CONTINUE THESE CHILDISH GAMES UNTIL THESE COMPANIES DECIDE NOT TO RENEW THEIR LICENCES AND SHIP OUT, THE LOSSES WILL BE COUNTED BY US, EU & OTHER INVESTORS WHO HAVE A LOT OF SAY IN MANY OTHER COMPANIES. RICHARD BRYNSON OF VIRGIN HAD ALREADY WARNED MANY INVESTORS WHEN HE PULLED OUT OF NIGERIA BUT SA COMPANIES STAYED FORMING AFRICAN BROTHER NOW ITS THEIR TURN AND RICHARD BRYNSON SHOULD BE HAVING A GOOD LAUGH. RICHARD BRYNSON IS A CAPITALIST OF NOTE HE OWNS A TELECOMS COMPANY VIRGIN MOBILE IF HE THOUGHT NIGERIA WAS A GOOD MARKET HE WOULDNT HAVE PULLED OUT BUT HE SAW THE RISKS OUTWAYED THE OPPORTUNITY AND PACKED OUT EARLY ENOUGH. I AM LOVING THIS! ![]() |

| Re: We Nigerians Are Unfair To MTN by Nobody: 10:21am On Oct 31, 2015 |
Ijaya123:Yes I know they violated the law.Reason might Probably be because they put the customers first with consideration of what the customers with unregistered sim might lose but then again,is it not What we'd probably want from companies like that?I mean, companies that put customers first? And I so believe most of the people saying mtn deserves the fine they are getting now are one of those that have not registered their sim, neglecting the fact that mtn 'fought' for them,in a way,by not blocking their sims, something they wouldnt have wanted. |

Now, deactivating those SIMs would have resulted to severe difficulties for users who had genuine reasons for their inability to update their account.
