Abeg make MTN go pay d money; if a Nigerian doing business in South Africa defaults weda deliberately or not, dey too won't hesitate to scapegoat him. South Africa and South Africans do not respect Nigeria and Nigerians enough!
However, in terms of CSR, I think amongst telecoms operators in Nigeria, MTN leads d way. UNFAIR Do you even know the offence they commit? For example; kidnappers kidnap your dad and they start to contact your family asking for ransom by calling with UNREGISTERED MTN SIM in which NCC already gave the directives that all unregistered sims should be cut off. Abegi NCC did the right thing because MTN ignorance will cost me, you and the rest. Why didn't NCC fine GLO, AIRTEL, ETISALAT.

Dear Nigerians, each time I read comments regarding this MTN penalty madness by NCC, I end up wondering if most of the comments were just for fun or realistic opinion of the commentators both on Nairaland and other top social sites. The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC slammed a N1.4 trillion penalty on MTN Nigeria for failure to disconnect customers with unregistered SIM cards. That fine is outrageous please! We have to stop the sentiments. I don't see MTN paying that huge amount of money. They have given reasons why they were reluctant with the SIM card deactivation thing which I believe is credible and reasonable enough.

We should not forget that MTN has the largest data base of users in Nigeria and they care so much about their customers more than the unfriendly policy.
They wanted a gradual process to the issue which favoured their customers more. Trust most Nigerians, registration of our SIM has always been an issue because of our 'attitudes'. MTN even called some customers, pleaded on many of them and even used free bonuses to encourage subscribers to register and update their SIM but many still refused. That's how we roll in Nigeria smiley Now, deactivating those SIMs would have resulted to severe difficulties for users who had genuine reasons for their inability to update their account.
Yes, MTN violated the law but justice can be tampered with mercy. MTN has done so much for this country: from infrastructural development to massive man power empowerment and development. From educational development to massive entertainment industry boost, in summary, MTN corporate social responsibility programmes are highly commendable and among the best in this country. MTN has changed lives in this country: many people can pay their bills because of this same company. MTN has done so much for us and should be respected please.Their (MTN) investments in the telecom sector have affected other telecom giants positively. This embarrassment against MTN should stop please. MTN is not like all these Indian and Lebanese companies that reserve most juicy management positions for their own citizens only, MTN pays their direct workers (Nigerians) very well unlike most of these foreign companies operating in Nigeria i.e ISON BPO. Top management players in MTN Nigeria are Nigerians. I strongly believe they should be respected and the large data
base and services the company operates here in Nigeria should be considered too. It's not easy to adhere to such rule while having such data base like that of MTN.
For those calling for MTN to leave
I laugh in Chinese and Zulusmiley Yes, if MTN leaves Nigeria, it will surely affect the company heavily but we will suffer it more. Our economy will suffer and unemployment will rise. You are calling on Nigerians to port to Glo and others: wait until any of these telecom companies handle the number of subscribers MTN is currently handling, then you will appreciate MTN better...I can bet you, many of them will collapse! They will not be able to handle such huge traffic.
Those of you calling MTN names
Can you count how many times you have cheated MTN to browse for free? Do you think the infrastructures used for internet services are bought for free? Do you think it is easy to maintain a business in the Nigerian environment with poor power and transportation sectors? Think again please! Don't ever forget that you benefit from MTN directly or indirectly. For those of you crying about MTN promo, did MTN force you into any promo? And most of us don't read terms and conditions of these services and promo from MTN and others.
MTN does not force you to subscribe to any of her services. Yeah, some marketing strategies are deployed to lure customers into certain services but it's still left for you to opt-in and opt-out. I can beat my chest to say that since 2009 I started using MTN line, I have never experienced any reason to accuse them of stealing. I rather say thank you to MTN than accuse MTN of stealing from me. Subscribers make the mistake of subscribing for one service or the other and finally accuse MTN of stealing from them. Some subscribers leave their app running on the background while their airtime gets deducted and they blame it on MTN. You're asking DSTV to leave as if it is DSTV that's working against an indigenous company from doing well in the same market. We complain about MTN and we still don't want to leave them, why? Other telecom companies should compete well with MTN or is it MTN that prevented Glo from taking over other African countries? MTN remains the best network in Nigeria and Africa, take it or leave it. The company should be respected and appreciated too. At least, they accepted to invest in the Nigerian telecom industry back then when other companies where shying away from Nigeria. They made the sector attractive. They made the industry lucrative, they believed in Nigeria when others didn't. I love MTN with my whole heart. Please, we should empathize with them instead of slamming them.

oga ade make we hear word jare...they should face d fine or get out of nigeria useless south Africa company...u kept saying mtn has done so much for this con3, what have they done outside the contract signed with nig govt concerning "social responsibility" who hasn't done so much? All banks, oil companies, telecoms, etc are contracted to carry out social responsibilities b it small or big to wherever they re located...how can mtn alone among four telecoms disobey ncc directives? That's because they believe our govt are useless and they can't do anytin just like how Mtn brother company multichoice bragged that nigeria govt can't do them anytin concerning "pay per view" and the increment on gotv n dstv sub....if mtn can't pay d fine they shouldn't ve done d crime....since they ve done it they should pay d fine #Simple...other telecoms that adhered to ncc directives are not fools ..they showed respect and obedience...Pls stop saying abt d much u said they ve done, it is part of their contract to carry out social responsibilities, other companies too do theirs is it because u don't get to see it on TV? Other telecoms disregistered sims but mtn didn't..to me dis is an obvious action believing notin go happen....#myownopiniontoo

Sometimes I wonder why some see reasons to defend wrong!? The Country is under trait on security in which one of the escape valves seems to be communication via mobile. Directives properly sent only for MTN to place their priority above ours at the expense of many peoples lives and cost. You prefer their wisdom over ours? Please without us being alive they won't stay in Nigeria. Apart from the penalty, they must be compel to block those lines within 14days. Even though indirectly the end users will bear the cost!

We get too sentimental about issues. This is a big problem with not just Nigerians, but probably the entire black race. And see how far that has brought us in terms of development.
The rules were clearly stated. The fines didn't come out of the blues, and it wasn't directed specifically at just mtn.
I think heavy sanctions like this will help corporate organisations sit up and take regulatory bodies more seriously. I feel for mtn but we need to understand that a lot of crimes can be curbed if all lines are duely registered. Kidnappers, fraudsters, cyber criminals, they all communicate through their phones and take advantage of this sim registration imperfection.
Sanctions fly around daily. Banks, car manufacturers etc. Pls don't let emotions continue to pull us backwards, let people sit up and do things the right way. We appreciate mtn, we operate on their terms let them operate on ours too.

Happy to see that someone is thinking in the right direction.

Because MTN and DSTV are southafrican companies operating in nigeria doesnt mean we should treat them like shit.

Do you know hw much MTN give back to our communities?

Do you know how much they pay in taxes?

And yet this bleeped up nation believes a fine that is enough to b nigerias annual budget be imposed because they refused to disconnect subscribers.

And had it been they did disconnect these subscribers, you wailers will still come out to shout EmptyHEN.

Not a bad opinion by someone with secondary school knowledge of GSM service providers and how MTN deliberately violated the directive of the NCC. GSM service providers make millions of dollars daily from drop calls and other sharp practices to rip off more than 148 million active subscribers in Nigeria. So, OP, should just talk about what he knows about and leave professional issues to the experts. MTN has escaped penalties for other violations, but the NCC cannot let MTN escape from this one.

The method discussed therein is called "Transfer pricing" it involves MTN paying some sums of money in billions of dollars to MTN Dubai a company whose office/ establishment isn't more than a four bedroom apartment in a city, and the article talked about how companies shortchange their countries of operation by siphoning monies due them to some offshore accounts! I think the 1.4 trillion naira isn't anywhere near the billions of dollars that have been moved over the years

South Africa has ridden us long enough, Stanbic is facing its own and DSTV is next, let them not sit up. So much exploitation. They don't want to realise things are changing in Nigeria, can anyone truly say this could have happened under Goodluck Jonathan? There's a new sheriff in town so it's not business as usual. All you have said is thrash. Nigeria as a country and its institution(NCC) should respect a company flouting the rules? You just didnt get it.

Unregistered lines of MTN are currently being used by kidnappers to negotiate ransom from the victims family, making police helpless in their investigations.

Is it the first time MTN as a company has been warned for flouting NCC rules?

The best MTN can do is to negotiate for payment terms, they should beg NCC to spread the payments of the fine over like 10 years or ask for reduction and pay NOW.

First Bank just paid a fine of almost N2b for an offence, even after making corrections immediately.

Nigeria market is too profitable for a company to be too big to control.

MTN became no1 telecom coy in Africa because of Nigeria market, and must ever be grateful to our people, NCC and Nigerian Government

How old are you? So sorry to ask but your response shows you don't know what you are saying. Mtn sold their sim as high as 50,000 when they commenced operation. I bought mine for 23,000 in 2002. At that time they charged 50 Naira per/min even if it's 1 second gba they take your 50naira. Until glo came and every thing changed.
My mtn line has turn to my second line, I don't buy credit anymore on same, how can mtn charge me 1,500 Naira for 500mb when glo is charging 1,000 Naira for 3.1gb.
Nigeria is their largest customer and it showed in the fluctuation of their stock in SA.
Finally, they are not good to their staffs I know first hand my wife works for mtn.
They should pay the fine to serve as a deterrent to others.

There is nothing outrageous about the fine. We all cry for a better Nigeria but we can't achieve that when simple regulations cannot be adhered to. The agreement between NCC and the network providers is that failure to deactivate a single sim will attract a fine of N200000. And MTN duly signed and agreed to it. So what NCC did was multiple N200k by number of sim not deactivated.

I am sorry to MTN but I soo love this! STANBIC was also issued a fine on Monday. Is this a coincident that all SA companies are being targeted? Well the answer to this, i honestly don't give 2 hoot about. IT HAS STARTED, IT HAS STARTED!!!! cheesy

I have always said SA companies & Nigeria should stop & break their false partnership and relationship. IT IS A BIG FUSS!!! THEY BICKER ABOUT THE MOST "STUPEDEST" THINGS ON EARTH. THIS FUSS OF A DIPLOMATIC POLITENESS IS NOT WORTH IT AND ITS COMING TO END.

SA COMPANIES MUST CONCENTRATE ON THE REST OF AFRICA, MIDDLE EAST & AGGRESSIVELY DRIVE EURO PENETRATION. MTN IS A LISTED COMPANY WITH SHARE HOLDERS ACROSS THE GLOBE, THE IMPACT TO SOUTH AFRICA/NS WILL BE MINIMUM.

MTN NIGERIA WAS NOT PAYING TAX TO SA OR EMPLOYING SANS.

ONE THING NIGERIA FORGET ON THE SURFACE IT LOOKS LIKE THEY ARE PISSING OFF SA BUT ALL SA COMPANIES IN NIGERIA ARE LISTED GLOBALLY AND THE MAJOR SHARE HOLDERS ARE GLOBAL PLAYERS.

NIGERIA SHOULD CONTINUE THESE CHILDISH GAMES UNTIL THESE COMPANIES DECIDE NOT TO RENEW THEIR LICENCES AND SHIP OUT, THE LOSSES WILL BE COUNTED BY US, EU & OTHER INVESTORS WHO HAVE A LOT OF SAY IN MANY OTHER COMPANIES.

RICHARD BRYNSON OF VIRGIN HAD ALREADY WARNED MANY INVESTORS WHEN HE PULLED OUT OF NIGERIA BUT SA COMPANIES STAYED FORMING AFRICAN BROTHER NOW ITS THEIR TURN AND RICHARD BRYNSON SHOULD BE HAVING A GOOD LAUGH.

To say the truth #1.4 tr is a huge amount to pay. But the question to ask Mtn is that 'are they not aware of the fine ?'
they claim they don't deactivate for the interest of Nigerian. Are they not ware of the security challenge in this country where many people were killed everyday by Boko-haram, majority were kidnapped on a daily basis. Those kidnerpper make use of mobile phone to negotiate for their abductor. How can they track the offender without proper record ? Mtn should abide by the rule. The question will have to ask ourself is that are
'are they the only operator in this country ?'
'Is people using Airtel, glo and etisalat not Nigeria ?'

I am a proud user of airtel and glo Nigeria. No shaking

I dumped MTN since 2004 because of their sharp practices and moved over to Glo. Believe me, I never regretted that decision. It is judgement day for mtn. They violated the law, they must pay the penalty. Pure & simple.
Yes I know they violated the law.Reason might Probably be because they put the customers first with consideration of what the customers with unregistered sim might lose but then again,is it not What we'd probably want from companies like that?I mean, companies that put customers first? And I so believe most of the people saying mtn deserves the fine they are getting now are one of those that have not registered their sim, neglecting the fact that mtn 'fought' for them,in a way,by not blocking their sims, something they wouldnt have wanted.
