Ojukwu the chicken ran away after boasting he would be the last soldier to carry a rifle in Biafra, throwing out children and relief officials from an aircraft bound for Gabon in the process and hiding in Cote d'Ivoire for 12 years.

The real hero was Philip Effiong who stood his ground, refused to run and put an end to the bloodshed, stating in his famous surrender speech that those who had made it difficult for negotiations to move on had quietly removed themselves from their midst. He ended up spending time in prison for his bravery.

Today the coward is celebrated (Ojukwu) while the real man and the real hero who saved millions more lives by taking a bold step of knowing when the situation was hopeless is forgotten. What an irony.

Thank you OP for reminding us.

Nice epistle. Great speech. undecided But you forgot to include the part where Ojukwu had said "in war even the grass will fight", before he turned tail and ran away some months later to Ivory Coast under the cover of darkness, abandoning the suffering and gallant people who had fought under him, and leaving his second-in-command to announce the surrender of the Biafran forces. undecided
The war resulted from Biafrans decision to defend themselves from invading enemies

Biafrans made their own decision during the war
Ojuckwu as much as he was the leader was still bounded by the decision of biafrans

Every action that biafrans took during the war
was a Biafran decision
Not an ojuckwu decision

The war was about the biafra
Not ojuckwu

Biafrans take responsibility for every action by biafrans during that war

oon this forum I concern myself with posting on topic and sometimes catch fun(flirt). Banters, insults and abuse appear to me as one of those things. But when someone take it so personal like some of these emotionally unstable people do, then it becomes a problem(to them)

We have heard you. E don do. sad But stop telling part of the story. What was Ojukwu's role in Biafra?? Was he the cook or cleaner?? So why are you trying to gloss over the decisions he took, which affected the lives of millions including the soldiers under his command? Who rallied the South-East to fight, gave them ammunition and ordered them into battle?? Wasn't it Ojukwu?? shocked
So why are you trying to absolve him of responsibility, when he was not just the leader of Biafra but also the Commander-in-Chief?? huh

Like I said before always tell the full story, biko. Every tale that has a beginning, also has an ending. And the incontrovertible truth is that Ojukwu ran for his dear life, when he saw the war was lost! He didn't care about the sick, suffering, dying and helpless people left behind in Biafra, at the end. No amount of white-washing can change that fact of history. There were witnesses to his departure and his flight. Period. undecided

True!! What Obong Philip Effiong did, took uncommon courage. Carrying out such a difficult decision in the face of such uncertainty, in order to prevent further bloodshed and save generations yet unborn, will always make him stand out as a great leader. undecided

Ojukwu and Hitler were both fighting a war based on greed and tribal supremacy. Same motive. The only difference is Hitlers motive was pure & unadulterated, ojukwus' was contaminated wt self interest.

Read about d invasion & looting of d Midwest. Here's a link:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midwest_Invasion_of_1967

You think d rivers pple didnt have a reason b4 kicking biafrans out & claiming their houses? No southsoutherner or minority should ever call DT dog a hero.
After all those killings u still think he was justified in running away, coming back rich, contesting an election, marrying beauty queens, being tabloid fodder, growing old while some families in his land had their generations wiped out?
You are a joker. If you want to blame anybody for the war, blame Gowon for going against the agreement he signed in Aburi, blame Nigeria for coming to down to the peaceful East to start shooting instead of negotiating. Blame your so called Nigeria for rushing to war as an answer to everything .

you see why i told you that you can never be ibibio except you are cursed, but you are not. The people that is already wiping ibibios are people that made it in such a way that no single person of ibibio owns even 0% oil well found in her land. The igbos will never take ibibio's wealth by force but will earn it. I read a report 2yrs ago by a journalist in akwaibom state to akpabio that the igbos are controlling all major biz in the state with exception of timber market. You can google it. They earned it not by crooks. I know that igbos are hated by their domineering spirit and taking the advantage of their host "laziness" or lack of foresight but can keep them off from hussling. This is not akwaibom but in every state.
Rantings of a brain washed mad man.
Go pour that spittle elsewhere.

awolowo is on a N100 while Nnamdi Azikiwe is on a N500........I really don't have time for all these tribal rants........when you ridicule a man whom his tribe respects then I would believe you do not respect your own leaders...........this thread is about effiong......wonder how ojukwu got into it.......
I hardly ever comment on nairaland but your comment struck me as illogical. If Awolowo is on a N100 note, that means he was considered as worthy of such honour before Zik because N100 was in existence before even N200 and N500 notes. And it was the highest denomination of the currency for a while.
But who even cares? How does it matter? You belittle the legacies of every great man when you compare him to another

awo was a great man to the yorubas while ojukwu was a great man to the igbos..........what baffles me is when people disrespect these men......just to prove a point........the comparison might be illogical, but it should make a lot of sense to those who understand......why would a person open a thread for a reason and all of a sudden it becomes the story of how ojukwu is a coward!!
