Is it necessary for a Yoruba son to be governor in a state where Yorubas are a minority? Otherwise they risk being accused of what they accuse others of doing. If Faleke is wanted by a majority, then all well and good but sneaking in through a technicality will create problems for him and the Yoruba.

I really don't get why Nigerian people always want someone from their ethnic group to be governor/president.

The answer to your question is hypocrisy. It is similar to some men calling those with 4 wives immoral while they who have one wife maintain 10 or more concubines all over the world.

If you are a native of the state even if you are a minority you have a right to be the governor. And most states practice some form of rotation like Lagos State rotate between someone from the Island, Someone from Epe/Ikorodu Axis and someone from the mainland (Tinubu from the Island, Fashola from Mainland and Ambode from Epe)

Even though an Epe man might be a minority but he still has a legit reason to be a governor because Lagos State is his ancestral homeland

Okun Yorubas in kogi even though a minority have a right to aspire to be governor because that is their ancestral homeland. and they are not recent settlers

If Faleke's has a legal argument to be the governor then I dont see any reason why he shouldnt pursue it because he is from a minority

That would be analogous to denying Jonathan the right to succeed Yar'Adua as substantive president because he is from a minority tribe which was what Soyinka, Bakare and Falana fought for in 2010 a.k.a sneaking him through a technicality

And I am not sure when wanting your own person to be president became a Nigerian thing

in 2008, 96% of blacks voted Obama to be president and an overwhelming Hispanic would support any Hispanic person to be president

I cosign ya post.

All is fair in politics as long as they're indigenous to the state.

They ought to be rotating the governorship of the state among all the ethnic groups there. The Igalas can smack their heads on the wall for I care - Yorubas in Kogi have the same rights as every other ethnic group indigenous to the state.

With due respect, if we follow this analogy, minorities would/should never be President of Nigeria. The ultimate goal of democracy is to be representative of all including minorities. It wouldn't be a democracy if a population of a state is alienated. BTW, the Okun did not ask the military to join them together with the Ebiras and Igalas. It's their absolute right to vie for the leadership of the state.

They are not migrants in Kogi State.

They are indigenes of the state. By right, they have every right to aspire to the highest post of that land.

It is left for other ethnicities to vote for them or for even the yorubas to contest.

This case is very different from the scenario you are trying to create.

since they have the population

Those guys need to detach themselves from that state

Its not looking bright for them. They'll continue to get bullied.

Raumdeter & Ilaje44

There is a difference between aspiration and popularity.

Anyone can aspire to be governor or president of a state or nation that they are native to.

But elections are popularity contests. And this popularity is often determined through ethnicity. Why can't a Scottish person become PM in the UK?
And the last Scottish PM(Brown) who got there through the back door lost the election on which he was on the ballot.

Having said that, minorities can aspire to be leaders anywhere but that person must be selling a fantastic product. Similar to how Obama won in the US.

The argument about GEJ a minority ruling is a strong one but I don't believe it is relevant here because GEJ had been sworn in and there was no constitutional or judicial reason to take the mandate from him. In this case, this election is yet to be decided or a victor sworn in. The party still has the opportunity to correct or validate Faleke's popularity. Let him contest with others who are also aspiring.

If Faleke attains this position through precedence set by the Supreme Court, he will simply be exposing himself. If he is unpopular with the majority in that state, they will frustrate his efforts. The end of that will be some Yoruba sons opening threads on NL and crying about how the Governor is being frustrated and then the wars and e-wars will start with Igala and some other mischievous non-Yoruba/Igala.

This is analogous to a black man walking around in the dead of night in Alabama or Mississippi. Yes he has the right to walk anywhere at any time but is it commonsensical for him to do so?

In any case, this is just my opinion.

So whats the constitutional or judicial argument for Faleke not to take the mantle of the APC and continue in the election

According to Atiku/Boni Haruna ruling in 1999. Atiku won the election but he handed the mandate to Boni because it was ruled that the Party PDP was the owner of the mandate.

Also from the Amaechi/Omehia ruling from 2007. Amaechi won the PDP ticket but was illegally substituted . At the general election Amaechis name was never on the ballot and it can be argued that voters voted for Omehia but the court ruled and handed Amaechi the mandate even though he never was on the Ballot for Rivers people

As long as its through a legal means either by elections or through the court. if Faleke wins then fine. Faleke can win and if he doesnt play the right politics be constitutionally impeached

In a country like Nigeria where we are multi ethnic and diverse, rotation of some sort is the only way even a Yoruba man Ibo or non hausa can aspire to be president.

Just like in Lagos an Epe man might never be able to rule without zoning, going by the Popularity contest elections are known to be

We've had some charge & bail lawyers running riot all over the media since yesterday...

A good majority of them insists this costitutional crisis is not synonymous to Boni Haruna & Amaechi scenario because there was no result. so there is nothing to build upon, that the inconclusive nature of the exercise before /after( jury still out on that) Audu's demise invalidates the process so a fresh election should be called...

From what i gleaned, the 49k votes in question is even an anomaly cos the total nos of PVCs collected is 25k which means declaring the result inconclusive in the first place is even a misnomer...

One conspiracy theorists opined that the REC got wind that Audu had bitten the dust & was "influenced" to declare it so in order to invalidate the process...

I believe doctrine of necessity should be invoked here & James Faleke should assume the post & the Igala can then send him packing in '19...
