Finally I made it to the very last page of a thread on Nairaland. Beautiful piece @jethro2, so much detail and in-depth breakdown of your real life experience. Thank you once again for reiterating the fact that EXPERIENCE IS THE BEST TEACHER and all these one day seminars and skill acquisition workshops are just scams. There's no way one can learn a skill in one day and start a business just like that. Many thanks to all you wonderful Nairalanders for all the love you show here by sharing. @Choiceman, @omode2, @Pavore9, @joive, @securi, @kalusam, @jeffnyson @soloxam, @greenmatorganic and everyone else who contributed to this thread, y'all have no clue how much you've inspired a peasant a communal farmer like myself. God bless you madam @jethro2 and everybody that made this thread worth my vigil...i read through the night page by page "sometimes I go back to read a page again when some issues reoccur". With the kind of access I have to lands at locations nearer to Lagos than Saki I take this up as a challenge!!! But be sure I'll be starting in my small 2plot yard where I live...

Thanx @omode, I believe the soil is fertile though there's a poultry nearby where I have got nearly 10tonnes of manure already. I have borehole in my yard and I ain't gat no neighbours so water isn't a problem.

The poultry is just a few houses away so I just got my wheelbarrow and am moving at my leisure time at no cost.

Our November training which will be the last for this year is mainly for those that would love to do irrigation farming and make the tomatoe millions.
Its coming at the right time.
The November training will also be the last on farm practical training for the year.
We will be working basically on:
1. Selecting your seed.
How do you determine which seed to use?
What quantity do you need for an acre or hectare?
How do you space your seed planting?
Is it compulsory to do nursery?
When do I transplant my nursery?

2. The soil
What type of soil is required for specific crop?
How do you recognise an infected soil?
How do you treat your soil?
What quantity of organic matter does your soil requires?
3. Farm planning and set up
Do I need irrigation for my farm?
What type of irrigation will be suitable for my crop?
How to set up the irrigation system
What quantity of water does my crop required?
How often do I irrigate?
4. Staking and mulching my tomato farm
Why do I need to mulch?
What is mulching?
What can I use to mulch?
Why do I need to stake?
What type of staking is good for my crop?
Which one comes first? Staking before transplanting or transplanting before staking
5. Fertigation/fertilizer application
Must I use fertilizer?
What type is the best?
Where can I source for it?
What's the difference between organic and conventional fertilizer?
How do I make my own organic fertilizer?
What quantity of fertilizer do I need to apply?
How do I apply fertilizer?
The above are some of the questions that will practically attended to during the one month practical training.

[quote author=panzaar post=29998661]With great passion, I followed your thread and I must say that its quite interesting.

As a businessman and by experience, I have a strong conviction that the vegetable or tomato cartel in the open market such as mile 12 can be broken by bypassing these big markets and creating a network of small markets in cities across southern Nigeria especially Lagos by lowering prices slightly in the short run.

This creation of a network of small open markets must come from the concerted effort of dynamic and passionate young agribusiness men and women. A good example of this small open market exist at Iyana Iba bus stop along the Badagry express way in Lagos where assorted vegetables are sold every saturday from as early as 6am. Most of these sellers and farmers sell produce from nearby small farms and from Badagry. The vegetables sold in this market are of very good quality and very affordable.

I must also say that I'm very much interested in tomatoe farming especially after the training you delivered at Ogbomoso under YABDI.

Keep up the good work.

Hi all.

This thread stands out to be extremely informative and highly encouraging. To meet up with required quality & quantity of vegetables for the standard market, I would suggest that jethro2 puts together some kind of mentor-ship program where she could nurture some of us who share in her inherent passion and commitment to agriculture and believe you me, she will most certainly be on her way to creating a bunch of young & committed agropreneurs the Continent has ever known.

Just stating...
