Terry Pratchett once wrote, "A lie can run round the world before the truth has got its boots on.” I needn't do much research on these words, as I experienced it in a well amazing way, and I took lessons from it as possibly as I could. I tried to find out what the preoperative factors aiding those words were, alas, I made progress, they were (though not limited to these two alone) - Gossips and Rumours.

Alot of times, folks seem to confuse the two, or simply assume they mean the same, but do they? Let's find out.

Rumours are a piece of information or a story that has not been verified. What this means is that the person telling the story doesn’t know for certain if it is true or not. Most of the time, people who spread rumours don’t bother to determine if there is any truth to what they are saying.
Typically, rumours are spread from person to person and can change slightly each time they are told. As a result, they can become exaggerated and altered over time.

Gossip on the other hand is slightly different from a rumour. Usually, gossip involves a juicy detail of some sort, which means the information is shocking or personal. What’s more, gossip is usually spread behind a person’s back and can be very hurtful. Gossip and rumours can destroy a person’s self-confidence and affect their self-esteem. It also can lead to depression, suicidal thoughts, eating disorders, anxiety and a host of other issues. What’s more, gossip and rumours can alienate friends, ruin reputations and even lead to ostracizing behaviour and other forms of relational aggression.

These two were largely responsible for the marital problem, which finally translated to divorce between the two main characters in my topic. A lot of the rumours and gossips were on the media, which as they tried to communicate it over time, got distorted and everything became hugely exaggerated. I would try to give an inside story of it all, not for any personal gains, but to clear some air, especially the allegation of adultery. Let me state categorically here, Rev. Anita NEVER accused Pastor Chris of adultery.

How did we get here then? Firstly, I have to put it on record that Rev Anita is a wonderful lady, a great mother, a teacher... I could go on and on. She is beautiful and quite intelligent. She was the Director of Christ Embassy International Office, which means she used to head the church in the United Kingdom and also oversees other churches there and beyond. It was all good until she started subscribing to gossips and rumours that her position is being taken over by other pastors, especially female pastors, and that she's no longer the "second-in-command", in the farce fact that most ministry decisions and programming where done without her involvement, even determination of her salary scale. Sadly, she took this all in, hook, line and sinker.

Her first reaction was to demand a sack of these pastors, especially the female ones, and make her the "second-in-command". It's important to note that very long before this, Pastor Chris has always reminded pastors that their wives aren't necessarily the "second-in-command" by virtue of her marriage to them, it doesn't even automatically make her a pastor or assistant Pastor, but she can have other duties in the church where she has a grace for, even if it is the children's church ministry. She can however Pastor another church, if she has a calling in that regard. The power tussle by Rev. Anita, spurned by her brothers and family friends wasn't going to back down - it was either her demands were met, or she 'leaves'. It wasn't long after, she moved out of the house.

Days went into weeks and then months, and there was no flinching on the part of Rev. Anita, who have had legions of emissaries from Pastor Chris to dissuade her of her actions and the path she's threading on. It was obvious that her moving out was simply a threat to Pastor Chris, in the sense that she felt it would be an embarrassment to the international renowned Pastor Chris, who should by that action accede to her demands. Her brother's and close friends had their feet on the gas pedal, speedily driving her down the lane of home wreck.

Pastor Chris spoke of the issue and said if he were to fully accept her demands, it would mean him sinning against God in doing them all. Seeing that Pastor Chris wasn't going to bow to the demands, but rather focused on the ministry God's given him, they hatched the next blunder - removing Pastor Chris' name from the board of trustees in the Church in the UK in a bid to take over. It however, didn't work as planned, as the Charity Commission of England and Wales took over the organization as a charity organization.

Then the next set of moves were more disastrous in all ramification. She filed for a divorce! We all read how it played out, and how Pastor Chris was against a divorce, but he was the one being divorced, and she later had her way. The plot, from my perspective was by the divorce, there was supposed to be a division of properties between the two parties involved, and it was, but there was a twist in the turn of events - Pastor Chris has no personal property of his own.

Properties from cars to buildings, businesses and even the white house (Where he lives) all belongs to the church, including all the seeds and gifts (material, cash etc) given to him, he gave it all, I mean everything, to the church - every bit of it. Pastor Chris maintained what God asked him to do so many years ago, hence today, he has no personal property.

The consequences of these were that Rev Anita left with nothing, not even the UK church, except for the alimony being duly given. In my honest opinion, her friends and family made her act as she did, making her lose everything, and the Church which everyone of them thought would crumble, didn't. It rather grew bigger and stronger. God prevailed!

It brings me back to the allegation of adultery being peddled by the media, due to distorted gossips over time. He was never accused of such, as there was no singular reason or evidence to back that claim in court. The next absurd allegation was that of abuse ( I find this so laughable ). Pastor Chris gave all his best in dissuading Rev. Anita, to no avail, and I believed this happened at a time like this for our learning and not gloating and judging. Those who are wise would learn, the rest can do otherwise.

In the wake of these all, during the storms and turmoil, I couldn't help but wonder at what we have turned ourselves to. I wondered "Why do some people enjoy/celebrate the misfortunes of others"? As hard as this question is, Christians (or so called Christians) were a bulk majority of this set of people. Enjoying someone else’s misfortune is known as schadenfreude and scientists from Leiden University in the Netherlands say that the lower one's self-esteem is, the more they’ll experience it.

Folks called one or two of the parties involved terrible names (Especially Pastor Chris), some saw it as a proof of their irrelevant theories, which is "Pastor Chris is not a true man of God". Others saw it as a means to cast aspersions on 'Pentecostal churches', others saw it as a reason to insult the body of Christ and Pastors in their entirety. Some preachers had their opinions too, when it should have been a time of prayer for the family, and the church of God.

These same folks who rushed to criticise and judge are themselves not perfect. Some are thieves, others are liars, some serial womanizers, etc, who all of a sudden have a moral ground to judge and qualify others as righteous or not. I thank God it's all calm now, and we all look to the future, not necessarily in the mundane, but eternity, as we would all give account of our actions to God someday... it'll surely be a long day that day.

From all your responses, you have only been able to confirm the rumours as the truth. And if truth must be told, the policy that allows wife to stay miles away from the husband is wrong and in my view is unscriptural (and if it is, kindly show me where it is in the Bible too for me to learn) and I recommend a review. Wives are supposed to be helpmates to their husbands and to assist them in their ministries. Anita is not an angel, she needs her husband attention, love and care which money, fame and Skype can not provide.
By the way, are you married sir? I am and I am speaking from experience. Couples separation is an anti-Christ policy and every Christian organisation should build homes and not destroy or separate it. What God has joined together let no church or man put asunder.
