I am simply creating this thread in order to gather the greatest minds of nairaland to discuss things from outside and within a religious perspective with a focus on Nigeria.

This thread can be about anything anyone finds intelligent. I personally love to talk about time travel, religious slavery and spiritual music.

I also want this thread to be a thread where the most difficult questions are posed and intelligent answers given.

And so, I launch this thread with the following question for KingEbukasblog-

I was speaking to a European white humanist that lived in Lagos for 2 years. He said that churches and mosques should start promoting family planning with condoms because Nigeria has one of the highest birth rates in the world. Our major cities are getting too congested.

Kingebukasblog, what do you think about a ban on pastors and imams preaching against condoms or family planning due to the looming overpopulation crisis?

This thread is a great idea! I didn't feel the other thread as some people were claiming landlord there. I see myself as a secular person. Maybe not an atheist but not religious either.

As for your question, I think that family planning should be taught as a public service message in Nigeria. We should do more about family planning becausetoo many people in poverty are having 6-10 children that they can't take care of. I am not sure about banning pastors, maybe kingebukasblog can discuss more on that. Isn't that why you asked him?

That is the problem. Churches and mosques can reach Nigerians far and wide in millions. They have a powerful voice and I believe that they shouldn't be spouting ignorance.

I believe in religious freedom and freedom of expression but it is not acceptable to yell "fire" in a crowded room.

Nigeria is overpopulated and we have religious houses saying "say no to condoms" or "be fruitful and multiply".

Thanks bro for the invite . Not sure about the ban but I believe that the marriage counselling committee in churches should handle the aspect of family planning not really the pastors . Books regarding family planning should also be recommended for couples who are going into marriage .

The onus should not only be on the religious institution . We should start from the young ones in secondary schools , inculcate in them the need to engage in family planning .

The government could enforce a law like they did in China to control the number of children a married couple should have .

Any of the above three is an ideal solution to Nigeria's overpopulation problems . The third is the most effective

I feel you. Personally, I don't believe in invading into people's private relationship. What matters is consent. If two consenting adults agree to have a relationship, wetin concern me?

14 years jail sentence is rubbish.

I'm sure you heard how most northern senators reacted when a motion was moved to curb the number of children a couple is allowed to have? They rose up in defiance and shouted that their religion is being attacked.

When you have people who still think like this, the move to tell a couple how many kids they should have will be dead on arrival.

Anything is possible. However, with the technology we have now, I don't think it is possible.

What intrigues me about time travel is its paradoxes and its possibilities.

For instance, if I go back in time and kill my grandfather, would I cease to exist in the present?

A dangerous possibility with time travel for Kingebukasblog is that one could go back in time and kidnap Jesus as a boy before he could start the christian religion.

I used to be a pacifist but the more I look at it, I tend to believe that we need a strong leader that would treat some of these northerners with an iron hand.

The only way one can stop this boko haram and fulani herdsmen is with force. One can not reason with madness. What we should do is install secular muslim governors in the north that will fight tooth and nail against extremism. A "FASHOLA" kind of muslim that knows how to relate to christians and non-muslims

Definitely, you'd cease to exist. Without your grandfather, there can be no you. That's simple logic.

The day man invents a time machine, that's the day man will attain godlike powers, and believe me, nature has its way of dealing with humans who tend to mess with what they shouldn't be messing with.

Yea, I feel that way too, but still, will that leader even get there? That is the question, given that we now live in a country where if you're not christian, or moslem, you can never attain a particular stage in the affairs of statesmanship.

Hmm, I wouln't know about the above, but what I do know is that our institutions built to fight these sort of things have been so very ineffective to the point it has been taken over by tribalism and religious sentiment.

Yes, you are right! An ability to time travel would be a god-like power.

As for going to the past and killing my grandfather, the logic is not so simple- that is why it is a logical paradox.

Think about three other logical possibilities.

1) What if I travel to a time before my grandfather was born? I would still exist, right? What is now the difference between killing my father and going back to a time before he was born since he wouldn't exist in both scenarios?

2) What if there are multiple future timelines as a result of killing my grandfather? What if I then create two futures? One future where I exist and another future where I don't exist because my grandfather is dead? Parallel universes?

3) What if I kill my grandfather for fun and then, my brother goes back in time just at the moment I was about to kill my grandfather then, he stops me from doing the murder?

Time travel logic is crazy! Only true philosophers can handle it.
