ls there any particular (trusted) place one can buy either synthetic or semi synthetic oil in Lagos? I do buy at Ladipo but sometimes when you get there, you may notice that the particular brand you are used to has finished, hence, making you to switch to another brand.

Ur best bet for oil is the service stations,if ur car recommends Mobil 1 buy from only authorised mobil stations, and if u re using Total but only from Total stations, never patronise hawkere as u cannot guarantee what they have in the gallons,

Thanks brother, but I am talking about synthetic oil. You can't get them in filling stations, except Mobil one.

Mobil 1 5w 30 (imported) cost about 12k

I would be switching to the Nigerian produced 5w30 to support the naira in my next scheduled maintenance

PS: Nigeria Mobil formerly restricted customers to 20 w50 and 0 w40 but I guess they have realised customers clamour for other variants. The Nigeria mobile 5 w30 comes with a green cap on the gallon.
no try am. Those two brands are world apart. I did it and assure u it won't happen again.

I use ROYAL PURPLE, It cost 15,300 naira for 5 litres.....U will only do the oil change once every 18 months, my cars have been running smooth since I have been using it...one day I poured it in my car and drained d oil immediately and start d car..it ran for an hour with AC without knocking d engine....very reliable....

You don't buy Mobil from Oando. They're competitors. Oando has it's own oil.

I use mobil 5w 30 synthetic for my honda pilot purchased for N11000 ,4 lit plus 1 liter making it 5 liters together though it was recommende i used 5w 20 premium oil but i only found 5w 30 synthetic in mobil station PHC & i bought it cos it's closer in grade. I don't change oil unless the indicator count down to 20% which could take a year cos i don't drive always.

I use mobil 1 as well and I think it's expensive. I bought 10 litres for 22k last week. I'd be pleased if you can suggest to me a cheaper brand or variant. I'd also love to know the consequences, if any, of changing engine oil.

Ps: I use a 2005 Nissan frontier
This is a very nice questn u asked here, its surprising how pple talk with impunity abt things they really don't anything abt. When looking at machine lubricants, 2 major things comes to mind- grade and make(name). we v monogrades & multigrades, sae, api etc. 0w30,5w30,15w40,20w50 etc. normally, this listed grades at a partcular sae/api r supposed to be dsame regardless of d make, but d unfortunate thing is that some manufacturers(especially d ones not protective of its reputatn) dnt meet d standard specificatns for d various grades so as to maximize profit while still labelling it high.so for this reason, its wise to buy frm a name u can trust, and where u buy it frm also matters.D brand u r using is good but expensive.i ll recommend Ibeto oil 5w30, 10,000 km with assurance direct frm coy.

Milemaster 5w-20 for my accord and Milemaster 5w-30 for my wife's corolla.

Its N7500 on Konga and some selected dealers in Lagos. Costs more outside Lagos.

Even at N7500 it's sold more than all the other oils combined on Konga and has good reviews supporting it.

Unlikely. Milemaster works for me. Has done so for the past 4 yrs.

Don't get me wrong. Castrol is great oil and I have used it as well as Pennzoil Ultra, Mobil 1, and Valvoline in the past. But I still settled for Milemaster. Why ? It's formulation is similar to the Castrols, Mobils, etc but better than the standard oils Ford, Honda, and Toyota suggest we use.

The 5w-20s and 5w-30s from Castrol are made using Group 3 base oil stock which is no different from what Milemaster uses. The flash point is lower than that of Milemaster. Save for Molybdenum and Boron the additive package on the Castrol 5w-30 Edge is not better than that of Milemaster 5w-20 ( see attached files ). Look at the levels of Calcium and Magnesium in the additive package. Castrol definitely won't clean my engine any better than Milemaster.

Castrol has been in the game longer and expectedly has a greater following. But there is nothing to suggest that spending more money ( N10,000 minimum on 5qts ) for Castrol gives me better value than spending N7,500 on 5qts of Milemaster for my Honda Accord or Toyota Corolla.

The gap between oils be they conventional, semi-synthetic, or fully synthetic have narrowed tremendously over the years. Having a popular or well known name has its advantages but you need more than that to sell in a competitive / price sensitive market where enlightenment is on the rise.

It seems your car was not on a level surface during the first oil check. As for the oil change, continue using the Mobil oil
