in as much as I support some of uches point , the olori is also very right .

Uche is married to a man that can easily accept gender equality.....

Olori is married to Oba of a community , where customs and tradition are taken seriously ...she has to abide by the rules ......even if she a feminist at heart or believes in gender equality.

If you are the wife or olori of a Traditional ruler ..whether Oba of Benin , Oba of Yorubaland, wife of Emir.. gender equality is out of the window. The olori cannot sit on the kings throne, wear the crown and start claiming right na. Its forbidden.

The wives are expected to respect and serve their obas or king .. If the Olori had said otherwise the community will frown at her and could be dethroned of her title as the olori. She has to lead women in her community by example.

We do have customs and traditions... Its either she divorce the Obas and become a feminist as Uche has suggested lol..

If you must know.. most oloris now have jobs , trades , businesses even own big companies , engage with their community and still serves their obas .. claiming gender equality here will be taking things too far.

So the Olori knows what she is saying and has her points. Uche shld try and understand her position.

equality is when we have 5000 male soldiers and 5000 female soldiers at the war front, not all round male soldiers. Till then, don't expect any equality.

BTW, what ways are women treated as unequal in Nigeria?

Bro you dull small no vex o.
There's no discrimination in joining the army it's a matter of choice, it's just like saying why do we have more female nurses
We are fighting for freedom from being treated less than a human being because we are girls. Read about gender equality my dear embrace it and protect your mother sister and daughters right. Thank you

if you truly want to prove how equal you are with men, take up hard jobs like joining the army. Till then, we are not equal.

In what way is the Nigerian society treating females less than humans? I have been asking this question since without any answer.

There'll never be anyone like him again - just celebrate his greatness while he's still playing. Cavs should make history today, if JR Smith can get hot and Kyrie can bring his A-game. Bron should do his ridiculous numbers since GSW have no proper rim protector left and Iguodala has back problems lol.

The time difference is crazy and these clowns are planning to bring a NBA team to London. Who's gonna stay awake every day for that? I think the UK has the largest American diaspora population and they need to start using NFL times for NBA as well. There are gazillion of Americans here (they might be close to a million) and a lot of people love basketball. Anyway, I'm going to sleep for a few hours later in the day and stay awake to watch it later.

Check this out, fam. I'm jogging on this narrow road near my yard and this white boy keeps driving back and forth in his black Ferrari spider, with the top down. Which past agitation are you referring to?

Ezionye:

Good for u dear. However, ur not needing it doesn't mean others that need it should not agitate for it. There are many women out there being discriminated at work because certain higher positions are seen to be for men. Some young lady somwer is being married of to one alhaji cos she's a girl and has no say in determining who to marry.

The bill is for those kinds of women

Besides your being able to enjoy these benefits u listed are cos of past agitations and enlightenment on equal opportunities for both sexes. In the default African system, u wudnt have seen the four walls of any school as a girl.

Men tend to approach gender issues from the husband perspective hence the stiff opposition to gender equality or equity. Men need to start thinking as fathers. How would you feel in your grave if you knew that your daughter was suffering in poverty because her brother inherited all your wealth and was using it to take care of another man's daughters ( wife and girlfriends). As for the olori, she does not deserve all this publicity. All that speech was showmanship for ooni. She is just using meekness and submissiveness as a strategy to dominate him. This woman dominated, used and dumped two strong men before the ooni. So submissiveness can definitely not be her trait. All na 419. She is getting at something.

Honestly I don't understand them. From my nursery school level up to Law School I have never been discriminated against based on my gender, rather I even get favours!

When I was pregnant a lot of people - both males and females- pampered me and wouldn't let me que in the bank, easily offered me seats anywhere I went etc.

In my place of work my Director is so nice to everyone both males and females but he's extremely nice to pregnant women and nursing mothers and we are paid according to our levels and never gender-based.

My dad sent my sisters and I to the same schools as my brothers up to any level we wanted.

I am able to get into any office in Nigeria, for example, when the FRSC towed my car for wrongful parking in Yaba I was able to meet their DG (hope that's how they are addressed) and he waived the penalty fees for me because he said I reminded him of his young daughter and he didn't like seeing women cry.

I have benefited a lot as a woman. I have never lost. The other day I bashed someone's car and I was supposed to fix it for him but he later said I should go because of my baby that he also has a wife and kids at home.

Look at the Nigerian Movie Industry, how many cinema movies have the male actors been able to produce except few of them like Kunle Afolaayan but look at all the ladies like Omoni Oboli, Caroline Danjuma, Uche Jumbo etc producing their movies like it ain't nothing.

I honestly don't know what these people are advocating for. Maybe it is a regional thing because where I come from and where I grew up at there's nothing like gender discrimination.

That is you. And the only reason is because your parents do not believe in gender discrimination. Millions of women around the country still face discrimination. This bill is for them not for the lucky few like you. In any case olori was just using stoop to conquer tactics. Woman that conquered two strong men before ooni. Equal ke? She is superior to men joor! Can you next time see how she has already gotten the men to eat out of her palms with that one statement. Women like her fit Nigerian men . Sometimes, people just want to join bandwagon.
I have never seen heard or worked in a place in nigeria where female doctors, or lets say teachers or lawyers or whatever profession were paid less for their jobs.
All teachers, nurses, doctors etc are all paid the same minimum wage.
Go to the market, you buy pure water at same price from sellers, both male and female.

I dont really know where else this agitation is coming from.

It is not about having money. There are self made women who still stay and endure because the society expects them to. I also know many women who invested alot and yet left without a pin to start life all over again. Leaving is a matter of choice.

Even with all the money in the world, a woman still needs lots of reassurance and assistance from friends and family before she can take the step of leaving.

well, blame that on your parents instead of making it seem as if that is how it happens in the whole of Nigeria. For the raped girl, I think it was a family thing and they didn't want to bring shame to the family so they settled it amicably. I don't think they killed the matter cos they wanted to favour the man.

pls, mention 10 programs and choices women are deprived of in Nigeria.

if you can't, then it means you should keep quiet henceforth.

What you freaks want is for women to be favoured undeservingly. You want a situation whereby when 10 males and 10 females sit for a promotional exam that requires just 10 people to be promoted out of the 20, the 10 should be constituted of 5 males and 5 females regardless of whether 8 males passed the test while only 2 females did. That is the kind of selfish equality you want. You don't want to work, you just want favours cos you are females.

Start by having equal numbers of females and males in the army.

First of all, I think you are taking the word 'equality' literally. Of course, men can never not be equal to women. God never designed the family or society to be like that. We all have different roles to play in the family and society. I am an engineer and I still do my part, as a mum, wife, sister and daughter. This freak(as you have called me) have never wanted to be a man or be a transgender. I love being a woman so very much. I will never trade it for the world! I also believe in the bible that says a woman should be submissive, but it not submissive to ALL men. Like wise it said in the same chapter that men should love their wives not ALL women (this is a story for another day).

Please, do not mistake 'gender roles' in a family or society as 'gender equality'. There are two entirely different things (See the definitions in my last post). You asked me about 10 programs women are being deprived of in Nigeria, but mind you, she did not give the speech in Nigeria and never even mentioned Nigeria in her speech, so it is a global issue not necessarily just in Nigeria. Come to even US, you will see inequality, India, China, Pakistan everywhere. She said this in on international platform not Nigeria, hence why I said she should have done some research first.

As for the promotion you are talking about that is total BS. That is not the point of gender equality, it is simply that if a woman equally qualified or even more qualified for the job, then should be given the chance and opportunity as well. Not because she is a female, but because of her hard work and her qualifications. Many companies do not want to hire women because of many things, especially maternity leave. Many would even ask you not to marry or have kids within the first two years (which also affects husbands too..lol) even in the US. Which is pure discrimination.

I once interviewed for an internship in VI during my undergrad studies for an IT position and I was told directly by the IT lead that he had asked for only men as he does not see a lady doing the duties as I would need to lift printers, computer etc sometimes. That is discrimination. I was able to get the position and also proof him wrong about doing my job as a woman. He even requested for me to come back after completing my studies!

Bloody blogger, please answer me this question, would you want your daughter not to be promoted or supported just because she is a woman?Or get lesser pay to a man for a position she holds the same qualification for? That and more is what gender equality is fighting for not for women to be wearing pants in the marriage (and 'pants shouldn't be taken for the literal meaning here wink). Mind you, even the King said something against gender inequality, see his comment; http://thenationonlineng.net/ooni-seeks-support-female-monarchs/

As for the army, any woman who chooses to join and fight should be given equal chances if qualified. There are many women in the army in the US here, even Nigerian women here that I know personally.

Lol, I didn't pull the number out of my arse...there are loads of yanks in UK. Also, they seldom live in areas where you've black people, apart from the new high rise flats in London. Can you blame those stashing billions? Once you notice the type of mentality the average Nigerian has - it's difficult to blame the leaders. The Queen never said Nigeria, she was on an international platform. Go do your own research on the issue, please spare me jare.

Lol, I can't hate on a white boy enjoying his life while getting that chicken. I just need to compete better if I want to be like him and not sit my arse there crying for equality loool.

Can you blame those stashing billions? Once you notice the type of mentality the average Nigerian has - it's difficult to blame the leaders. Those folks love being slaves for a few crumbs, rather than fight for what belongs to them. They're all over NL supporting the rogues 24/7, while they go back to poverty once they log off lool. Classic Stockholm Syndrome. A lot of these people are savages and everything they do is based on bandwagon/sentiments and not logic.
brah you pulled that number out of yo ass. watch this

Population[edit]
The 2001 UK Census recorded 158,434 people born in the United States.[1] According to the 2011 UK Census, there were 173,470 US-born residents in England, 3,715 in Wales,[2] 15,919 in Scotland,[3] and 4,251 in Northern Ireland.[4] The Office for National Statistics estimates that 197,000 US-born immigrants were resident in the UK in 2013.[5]

The largest single local cluster of Americans in Britain recorded by the 2001 Census was in Mildenhall in north-west Suffolk – the site of RAF Mildenhall and nearby RAF Lakenheath. This is because of the legacy of the Cold War and NATO cooperation. 17.28 percent of Mildenhall's population were born in the US. In London, the majority of Americans are businesspeople and their families which ties in with the strong economic relations between London and New York City or Washington DC. Chelsea (where 6.53 percent of residents were born in the US in 2001) and Kensington (5.81 percent), have large American populations.[6]

Prior to the end of the Cold War, the highest proportion of Americans resident in the United Kingdom per head of population was centred on the Scottish seaside town of Dunoon, Argyll and Bute, the former site of the Holy Loch US Navy base. At its height in the early 1990s around a quarter of Dunoon's population was American.[7]

Some Americans in the UK are older, ex-servicemen who returned to Britain after being based in the UK during World War II.[6]

Wow! I never said it was the company's policy not to hire a woman, I simply said the IT lead stated that he preferred a man to be in the position. Which is discrimination by the way, private or government-owned.

The Queen never said Nigeria, she was on an international platform. Go do your own research on the issue, please spare me jare.

P.S: You do not have any valid arguments at all, you are just looking for points from people's comments to throw back in their faces. What are your own personal arguments against or for 'gender equality'? I have said mine, what are yours? So I can use your points against you like you did mine.

My point is that gender equality should be shoved up the anus of its proponents. That's my point.

Can you use that against me? grin

I'm a victim of gender inequality I was denied education because my brother was too dull to pass waec but have to wait for him to pass after five years and wait an extra year for him to be ahead of me in the university. A girl of 12 was raped by her uncle and nothing was done because he's a man. E.t.c
Why because I'm a woman I'm of less importance. Bro gender equality is not about marriage if you need to understand more PM me and I will educate you thanKs

The case you have stated is not a case of gender equality, it is a case of uneducated parents, sorry to say. If the parents concerned knew better, that would not have happened. As for the 12 year old being raped, blame it on the judicial system. If we had a functional judiciary who had not been bought over by the privileged few, I am sure we will have a country nearly as clean as Switzerland.

I don't enjoy typing epistles, so I will just go back to oblivion. By the way, try to see beyond your eyes Sarahade.

do you really think gender equality is about who cooks in the house angrytruly if you want to hide something from a black man just put it in a book! on every page of this tread many people have explained over and over again that gender equality is not about marriage yet you refuse to even read not to talk of understanding. if this is how the so called educated youths think then Nigeria has a long way to go o undecided The first thing a reasonable person does before contributing to a discussion is to educate himself about what the topic is
ok. Ooo mama Proffessor of gender equality. We shall see how far you can go
