Before any misunderstandings arise, I do not in any way support Erdogan. He does not represent the kind of government I would want for myself and family. However, has he not been democratically elected not so long ago?

As for the 'best news of the year', time will show. I pray there will be no civil war.

Well you're right, I'm guessing they must have had intelligence Erdogan was gonna get the boot.
Well it presents a dilemma to NATO as Richard Haas said "Do you support non-democratic coup Vs increasingly non-democratic leader" has to be the latter with Egypt as a case study.
Lol cheesy Erdogan is asking people to take to the streets, imagine the irony

The Eygpt scenario will play out again. Some pro military guy who is secular and pro west will be in charge very soon. Maybe a former military guy.

If he was less Islamic, there wont be any incentive for the military to be involved and the west would have been forced to tolorate most of his not so NATO- like policies.

I heard he was on facetime and currently trying to get assylum in Germany.

Erdogan's plate was full: repression of the press and heavy handed crackdown on freedom of speech, providing aid jihadists in Syria and Iraq and allowing them free unhindered access through Turkey, illegal cross border incursions into Syria and Iraq, the genocidal crackdown on Kurds where several Kurish cities were wiped out, shooting down a Russian jet which in turn tanked the economy when Russian tourists stopped visiting and the general instability that Erdogan's actions brought upon his country are all possible reasons why these brave military officers have staged this coup

Erdogan's apology to Putin and his move to seek a detente in relations with Russia and step back from his ill-advised and delusional goals came too late. Good riddance!

As you make your bed, so you must lie on it. He had it coming. Its practically game over now for Erdogan.. The ghost of the SU-24, the destruction done to Syria, and the countless memebers of the opposition killed and imprisoned in Turkey, are all haunting and crying for vengeance against Turkey meat Erdogan. The confrontation with Russia was something that has also caused a divide among the top echelon of the Turkish military, and the sanctions that later followed further added fuel to the fire. You easily don't find replacemeant for 3million tourists. I told those terrorist apologist down here that, Erdogan just fired an air to missile against himself, and now, we are seeing the accumulative effect of his daredevil politicking. I will not be surprise if Russia or the US is involved in this. Don't forget he even tried to blackmailed the US.

Now, even if the coup didn't succeed, the fact has now be laid that, Erdogan is now a want away terrorist and authoritarian despot. The future for him now is one hell of uncertainty.

How Assad must be smiling now, while watching event from Damascus. Two evil Rulers that wanted to kill his legitimate government, chanting the Assad must go slogan, have been slapped back by payback, within a month. David Cameron has now officially packed out of number 10, downing street, and now Erdogan. grin This just reminds me of the saying that, man proposes, but God disposes. God shall continue to expose and dispose of all them that want Syria to be another failed state like Libya and Iraq, in Jesus name, amen. cool

I seriously doubt putin's hand is in this. If you check the news you'll find out that obama's relationship with erdogan has been strained.

This coup has obama written all over it. If indeed obama is involved i personally think this is the boldest thing he has ever done.

As in who gave obama the 'balls' to do this to a fellow NATO state. But lets watch and see events are still unfolding.

Somwhow , you found a way to drag putin into this.
As you rightly stated Erdogan's attempt to stifle opposition, support for jihadis
and its backdoor Islamization of turkish society will be responsible for his downfall not putin.

Are you saying that the Turkish people were not able to distinguish a democrat from an autocrat and see through the masquerading?

I think it depends on how you want to see it. He was actually quite popular. But the sometimes you have to manage your base as a leader and be able to balance it with the remaining party of the society.

The only reason Turkey has been sucessfull economically has been the tradition of being secular than the rest of the islamic majority states in the middle east and that has been the brain child of the military.

But Erdogan's base is the islamists that are not very moderate.

So he is kind of like a guy that can win an election in a divided country with competing ideologies so it was all a matter of time.

That is what you get after shooting down a Russian plane and running like a squealing pig to NATO for protection. Sadly this is the end of Turkey, The coup would empower the PKK, The Kurds, and other sects that have been oppressed by the Erdogan regime. The military may likely have the support of Russia and Erdogan faction(If he have any) will have the support of the West and ISIS. It would be a whole repeat of the Syria war that lasted more than 4 years. Let's see if Erdogan would be labelled a tyrant by the West like they labelled Assad.

This has nothing to do with downing Russian plane and turkey will not descend into civil war,
since ataturk , the turkish military have always pride itself as defenders of secular democracy, it
is disregard for the constitution and erdogan's backdoor islamization policy that is responsible
for this coup.

Ha ha ha.
I'm laughing.

Well, if you can recall a similar situation in Egypt not too long ago, all the US has to do is to fiddle with the semantics a bit , by say, calling it " an unanticipated transition" , but not a coup.

In geopolitics, duplicity and ambiguity is the name of the game. No one plays it better than the US.

In fact, John Kerry has already spoken, and has surreptitiously telegraphed the US support for the this " unanticipated transition".

Rather than condemn the coup outrightly as would have been expected of a big Ally of Turkey, he was somewhat circumspect when he said " we look forward to restoration of peace and continuity".

That tells the whole story.

The new order is falling pieces by pieces.

Don't be too happy, if this coup was foreign influenced , then it is definitely western-backed
not Russia, Erdogan has been dictating to Europe since the refugee crisis and they will be
more than happy to have a friendlier person in power.
