Yoruba Appointed as New York Police Commander

Elated by the appointment of a Nigerian, Ms. Olufemi Obe, as the precinct Commander of the New York Police Department (NYPD), the House of Representatives Committee on Diaspora congratulated her.

The committee, in a statement by its Chairperson, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa (APC, Lagos), also lauded Ogwunike sisters, Nneka and Chinyere, who are the first siblings to be drafted as number one picks into two major basketball teams in the United States.

Obe, on her part, is the first black from the sub-Saharan Africa to have occupied such position in the history of New York Police Department.

A computer scientist and public administrator trained at the City College and Government Marist College, Deputy Inspector Obe was appointed as Commander of the 28th Precinct in New York City to replace Deputy Inspector Kevin Williams.

She joined the New York City Police Department in February 1994 and rose through the ranks.

Meanwhile in their statement, the Ogwunike sisters are the second siblings drafted in the history of any American sport, next to the National Football League (NFL) Leyton brothers, making them the first to both be drafted number one picks in basketball globally, and the second siblings to both be number one picks in any major sport.

While Nneka is number one draft pick to Los Angeles Sparks, Chinyere is number one draft pick to the Connecticut Sun. Both of them are graduates of Stanford University who hail from Imo State.

The House committee while wishing them success in their various careers noted that millions of Nigerians are excelling all over the world and stressed the need for Nigeria to tap into the enormous talents and successes of Nigerians in diaspora for national development.

Ireland elects first black mayor

A Nigerian man who arrived in Ireland as an asylum seeker seven years ago has become the country's first black mayor.
Rotimi Adebari has been elected as first citizen of Portlaoise in County Laois.

The 43-year-old fled from Nigeria in 2000 because of religious persecution. After a few weeks, he and his family settled in the County Laois town.

In 2004, he was elected in the local elections as an independent councillor and on Thursday he became mayor.

The move was the result of a voting pact between Fine Gael, Sinn Fein and independent councillors.

The father-of-four has completed a masters degree in intercultural studies at Dublin City University and now works for Laois County Council, co-ordinating an integration project for local immigrants.

Mr Adebari said it was a great honour to become Portlaoise's first citizen, but that praise should be given to the people who elected him three years ago.

"Ireland is really changing. The immigrant community in the town has been growing, especially since the accession countries joined the European Union on enlargement in 2004," he said.

However, he added: "That is not to say that I did not have my own share of the prejudice that would be out there against maybe Nigerians, or immigrants or asylum seekers."

"But I don't let the attitude of a very small minority over-shadow the fact that the people are wonderful."

Nigerian nominated to serve as the United States Assistant Attorney General for the United States Department of Justice Civil Division

Debo Patrick Adegbile (born December 1966) is an American lawyer in private practice who was nominated to serve as the United States Assistant Attorney General for the United States Department of Justice Civil Division. The Senate rejected his nomination because he had filed a brief arguing that there was racial discrimination in jury selection for the trial of Mumia Abu-Jamal, a convicted and allegedly-confessed murderer of a law enforcement officer.

Adegbile also worked for the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund and as a senior counsel on the staff of the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary.

Born Adebowale Patrick Akande Adegbile in New York City, Adegbile is the son of a Nigerian father and an Irish immigrant mother. He was raised by his single mother. He also was a child actor on the children's TV show Sesame Street during the 1970s, playing the character Debo and performing in episodes for nine years.

Adegbile studied at Lehman College in 1986 and 1987 and earned a bachelor's degree in 1991 from Connecticut College. He then earned a law degree from New York University School of Law in 1994.

During law school, Adegbile served as a legal assistant in the summer of 1991 for the New York law firm Solin & Breindel and then was a summer associate during the summer of 1992 for Morrison & Foerster. In the summer of 1993, Adegbile served as a summer associate for Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison. He then joined the firm full-time as an associate in the firm's litigation department in 1994, holding that position until 2001.

In 2001, Adegbile joined the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, where he served as assistant counsel from 2001 until 2004, associate director of litigation from 2004 until 2007, director of litigation from 2007 until 2010, associate director-counsel/director of litigation from 2010 until 2014, acting president and director counsel from 2012 until 2013, and special counsel in 2013. Adegbile argued his first case before the United States Supreme Court in 2008, making a defense of the Voting Rights Act.

In October 2011, blogger Ed Whelan reported that the White House was considering nominating Adegbile to one of three vacancies at the time on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. Shortly thereafter, The Washington Post reported that President Obama had asked the American Bar Association to evaluate Adegbile's credentials, but the White House did not submit his name.

In 2013, Adegbile joined the staff of the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary as a senior counsel with a focus on legislative matters.

On November 18, 2013, President Obama nominated Adegbile to serve as Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division, to succeed Thomas Perez, who had left the position to serve as United States Secretary of Labor.

U.S Senators from both parties objected to Adegbile's signing of an appeal for Black Panther member Mumia Abu-Jamal who was convicted in 1982 for the first-degree murder of Daniel Faulkner, a Philadelphia police officer, on December 9, 1981. Mumia Abu-Jamal was sentenced to death, although the death sentence later was vacated because of problems with jury instructions. Adegbile and other lawyers filed an unsuccessful amicus curiae brief with the United States Supreme Court in 2009, arguing that the conviction was invalid because of racial discrimination in jury selection.

In January 2014, Adegbile's nomination was returned to Obama, who renominated Adegbile within days.

On February 6, 2014, the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary reported Adegbile's nomination to the full Senate in a 10–8, party-line vote. On February 27, 2014, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid filed for cloture on Adegbile's nomination, in an effort to cut off a filibuster by Republican senators.

On March 5, 2014, the U.S. Senate failed to advance Adegbile's nomination in a 47–52 vote blocking his confirmation. Senate Republicans unanimously voted against him, particularly because of his appeal for Abu-Jamal, along with seven Democratic Senators.

On September 15, 2014, Adegbile announced his withdrawal as a nominee to be assistant attorney general, and that he would be going into private practice, joining the law firm of Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr.

Nigerian Designer Yusuf Abubakar Tumi Talks Designing for the Oprah Winfrey Network, MtvMAMA, Bobby Valentino & More

Designer, Yusuf Abubakar is the 25-year-old up-and-comer who is creating quite the name for himself in the fashion and entertainment industry. He is the creator of Apparel Polo designs and also consults for a number of English Premiere Leagues.

After designing costumes for the Oprah Winfrey Network‘s drama series – ‘Flex and Shanice’ and becoming the creative designer for Hip-Hop musician Bobby Valentino‘s fashion range; Yusuf also designed wristwatches for the 2015 MTV MAMA Awards. In an interview with DailyTrust.com, he talks mixing entertainment and design, his experience so far and what he plans to do next.

Read excerpts from the interview below;

On his experience designing for the Oprah Winfrey Show
The experience was absolutely epic. They reached out to me without my initially taking them seriously. In no time I saw it buzzing online and all, then I had to sit right and say ‘let’s do this.’ We all know the name Oprah as a big brand and her TV network as well, I may not have made it to Oprah herself but making it to her TV network and a series on her network was a dream come true. That is still one of my biggest accomplishments on the American scene linked to my work.

On how he landed the creative director job with Bobby Valentino
Wow! That was major for me. Growing up, I watched videos of him and Ludacris singing about the beauty of Africa and our ladies. I am really honoured and thrilled to be working with Bobby Valentino as the creative designer of his collections in collaboration with my brand. I just finished his second collection. We are bringing him to launch his collections in Nigeria. We have companies that will be endorsing our event, ‘The African Times’ from international watch brands to corporate bodies. It is a show that will bring talents across Africa and Europe to exhibit in Abuja and Bobby Valentino is the special guest, heading the event for his collection here Abuja. I’m very excited about it because we are pulling out the creative entrepreneurs in Abuja and we’ll showcase the real Bobby Valentino and the collection I’m creating for him.

On his partnership with MTV MAMA 2015
That is top secret but I would give you rough ideas. My partnership with MTV was for Vintage concept to be the official time for MAMA 2015 and more to come. Roughly speaking, I handled more than $132,000 worth of watches, excluding certain pieces. So it was a major partnership which I did and all the winners of the award had a wristwatch courtesy of Vintage Concept and I. What I have done with this company I brought to Africa, is to initiate corporate social responsibility, adding value to the consumer and how we promote African music and entertainment with our time. That’s what I did with Vintage Concept.

Wale Became The First Rapper To Open A State Of The Union Address

President Obama gave his final State of the Union Address last night (January 13) and prior to the speech, Wale made history in his own right.

The D.C. rapper became the first hip hop artist to open the State of the Union. He performed tracks like “Chillin’” and “LoveHate Thing” in what looked like a jumping pre-game event.

He also took a selfie with the vice president's wife, Jill Biden.

During Barack Obama’s final State of the Union, he proclaimed the United States “the most powerful nation on Earth, period,” and pushed back against detractors (presumably Donald Trump) who claim his presidency was a disaster for the economy, saying they are “peddling fiction.”

Just yesterday, Kendrick Lamar revealed via his “pay it forward” video that he met with President Obama in the White House and discussed “topics concerning the inner cities, the problem, the solutions,” and ways everyone can start “embracing the youth.”

2016 is already starting to look better than 2015 for hip hop in politics, and we’re loving it.

The funny thing is posting failed business men as achievers, that was where I knew it was futile to try to argue with a Yoruba

Yorubas are quiet business people grin grin grin
K

We dominate Nigeria's business arena.

How do any of these average achievers compare or fair when compared to an igbo achiever is what I still can't fathom.

Someone even posted about jimoh Ibrahim whose business has been taken over by Amcon or posted about Skye bank chairman that has bankrupted a bank
