In a moment , we untangled as if nothing had happened. Dani slipped into the chair like a draw soup. I shook my head and smiled , then focussed my gaze at the door.


" Oh God" I sighed "



" So Izzy, this is what you do in school,I sent you to learn and you are here making out with a boy" Kechi said and mimicked my mom's voice . If I hadn't seen her, I would bet my life on it that it was Mama. She would pass for an imposter.

" Idiot "I cursed under my breathe.


She burst into laughter.
She cleared her throat and dropped a polythene bag on the desk near the bed's head. I percieved aromas , appetizing and mouth watering.



Kechi tried to give me a peck on the cheek, I hesitated for a while, but then, she forced it and I became blue allover.


" Yuullk! !! I exclaimed



" I know you love me too" She giggled and played with my cheeks. It was so annoying.


" Bae , which kind play is this nah? For Christ sake ---" I drew her ears nearer, looked at Dani with the corner of my eye " Not here, you want me...me to cut off your lips"



My face tightened and she laughed. Her actions made it look as if I was a lez. Thank God Dani knew my taste, else it would have been something to reckon with after the storm.


She turned to Dani , pulled out something from her bag. I peeked and suspected it to be his credit card.It turned out , I was right . Dani never carried cash around, the rich son of a business Tycoon from Onitsha. I felt a blush as it broke out ,on my cheeks.



" I spent .." Kechi began.



" Don't worry , I got the alert " Dani cut in and pocketed his credit card. He slightly tapped her on the shoulder, it was so nice to have someone like him look out for me and my friend. " You can treat yourself to a nice spar with the change" he winked.


He advanced to my bed side and cheerfully gave me a pat on the arm " I'll be on my way now.. I've got classes for the afternoon"


* I love you so much Dani, just go on, I'll be fine* it nearly escaped my mouth but I couldn't confess just yet.



" Alright" I said" I will see you soon "



He walked out , and stopped only at the door, turned and gave me a smile of the century. My heart quickened and I gasped for air. * Oh my! ! This guy could smile for Africa* Was that just for me* I had won a lottery indeed.


When he had left, I fixed my gaze at the door and assumed he was still there. I practically saw his smiles ,they flashed through my subconscious mind. suddenly ,a familiar but irritating figure came in sight, it blocked the door ,casted its shadows of horror and disgust.



" Hello.... Earth to Iziegbe, oya snap out it " Kechi's voice came as she snapped her finger across my face.


" Can't you see am having a moment here? " I looked her in the eye " Is wa for you o!!

"Duh!! " She said

" Whatever!!" I waved my palm.


She laughed and I joined after trying to hold it.
She sat at the foot of the bed and cuddled my toes, Kechi wanted to say something, but somehow was afraid , what could it be? She came further to the bed's head.



" I warned you last night, not to leave but you insisted " She said in a calm voice. " Now look where you ended up, "



" I know, I know-- cut the righteous part , please " I looked away into the window on the side of the room, the wind swam harmoniouly as it touched the curtains.


Why 'd she choose that moment to remind me of how I hated heeding advices, especially those that came from her. I always pretended back at home but it was never more than skin deep.


" You got lucky though, good for you. And now you have a personal body guard" Kechi said in a calm tone.



" Who got me one? And what do you mean?



She stood up and paced the room , then stopped and crossed her arms. " The guy that brought you in..."



" Yes what about him? I asked startled , I sat up a little.


She kept quiet for some seconds , then said " He was acting like someone possessed, his attitude....Bae, I don't like it all, not to add that he had the features of a club bouncer. He looked dangerous. He scrutinized me last night. He was a bit awkward ,well I can't explain... Wait till you meet him"



Hmm... I thought out ,who could this guy be?

Visiting Mr . Ake's Office was always a fun ride. He would demonstrate every word that came out his mouth, his arms glided in the air and was a sight to behold. I admired his mastery of communication skills. He knew how to sink his idea deep into one' s subconscious mind.



" I suppose , you have been faring very fine, no? He asked as he dropped his pen on the desk.


" I'm okay sir, " I began ,still standing" Its just that I haven't been able to --"



He cut in " Yes, I know. Your folks have even tried contacting this agency through our office at Benin. It turns out you left your mobile phone at home, wrong?




Oh my, This man was just something spectacular. Look at the way he tossed his arms rhythmically to every syllable. I was astonished to say the least. Yet surprised.

"He read my thoughts? I couldn't tell.



" Isnt that the problem? Miss Barry ? " He brought me back to reality.



" Yes sir! I stood up straight and calm.



He shook his head, and turned to his laptop. After that, he typed in some words on the keyboard , he focused at me again, I thought he took record of my progress. Maybe he did!!


" So what stopped you from calling them? He asked and furrowed an eyebrow.



" I've been trying to call my own line-- its switched off, my parents should have turned it on by now. I don't know why they --"

I cut myself in the sentence , to prevent any foul utterance against my folks. The spirit of the lord which dwelled in my soul, forbade me speaking such.
I put my head down in shame/ my eyes looked down to my dark orange boots.

" Look at me, Efua " Mr Ake began " Yes ! Good " he got what he wanted " Now listen here, Do you see that this new generation of academics and scholars have lost the real touch of learning? What can you boast of, as a graduate ? If you can't memorize numbers ?


" What you indulge " He continued " yourselves in ,is spending time on the internet and technologies that aid you no less than a peanut shell.? " He paused " You don't know your parents number offhand?----Well " his tone reduced. " that's something. Just make sure you call your own line --- they have turned on your mobile."




He grabbed his pen and buried himself deep into his work , he waved at me , signalling me to eject myself out of his office, I knew he was disappointed. He didn't say it !



" And one more thing" He called me back " Your housemates , are they civil and mannered?


" they are, sir" I said , to calm his storm.


" Good,..very good, okay . You can leave " he paused momentarily " And Efua , be careful and vigilant,be a good girl"


I shook my head and left with honour.

The iron door flung open and the unrepentant sinner barged in. His eyes strayed away form me. He walked past and didn't even glance my direction.

I pushed my bible a little and sat up into the chair. My mind and body in dispute. Nosa had ignored me throughout that day, stated from the house we shared into the work place where we co habited too. My only crime was trying to get him do morning devotion with us, he vehemently refused and walked out without breakfast. I wondered if he even washed in the morning.



" Welcome o" I said as he walked past me. " Welcome o , Nosakhare , I'm greeting " I said again.



" Keep it to yourself" He replied without looking at me " I'm not ready for prayer sessions, I have a sleep session to enjoy "


Really ? Sleep session? This guy is nuts ,I wanted to yank up and strangle him. In the time of John the baptist, the kingdom of heaven suffered violence and only the violent.... Well ,I let it pass.


I was confused and thrown into a state of disbelief, why was his heart so stone cold to the word of God? I bowed down and prayed for his soul.
