This is the understanding of someone who is myopic or lacks depth of thinking about this policy. There are no quick wins to fixing a country. In the scenario you have painted one would expect that the public discuss would be how to make the policy more effective without bringing unnecessary hardship on the citizens.

The owner of the Sienna could also have taken advantage of the window created by the Customs to ratify his documents. Will you say someone who bought a stolen car should be allowed to keep enjoying the vehicle because he did not take the pain to do what is right.

Please governance is not for kids. We should learn to engage our minds and take a wider and far more reaching look at issues. The policy is the BVN of car importation in Nigeria and like the BVN it will assist in no small measure to curb corruption especially of custom officers.

Is the policy perfect? No.
Is it a good direction to go? Yes .
Can it be improved upon? Yes.
Who will assist in identifying the possible loop-holes ? We citizens.
Why the citizens? They are familiar with all the channels that government officials use to circumvent the system and cheat on citizens daily.

This is the way countries build systems.
It is better to keep quiet and be presumed wise than to speak out and remove all doubts as to your foolishness.

I laugh at clueless nigerians who are supporting Tyrant Hammed Ali.

You bought a family car (e.g Siena) from a dealer who underpaid customs 6 years ago, Ali then ask customs officers to leave the borders ( their primary duty posts) and go out ILLEGALLY on the streets for stop and search, while you are returning from church with your family after being harrased by Police, Road safety, Vio, Latsma, Custom officers asks you to pull over, ask for your custom papers and declare that the dealer whom you bought the car from didn't pay enough duty.

They order you and your family members out of your car and drive to the custom office while you and your family trek home. Who is doing who?

You really think Custom officers will have the nerve to stop Saraki or Dino's convoy when they are on the move for payment of duty? It is you poverty-infested zombies who throw owambe when you buy your first Golf 2 and 3 that will be their target.
And when that happens, make sure you lament in silence and don't come here crying.
Don't buy a car unless it carries genuine custom duty.
if u dont do this and u get embarrassed along the road then u re at fault.
b4 I paid completely for my car I went with the dealer to custom's offc to verify the duty I was given.
If everybody stops buying car without proper duty smugglers will be out of business and that Will be better for our country.
buy a car without duty at ur own peril.
I work in a place where I cannot be arrested for fake duty, yet I insisted on having genuine duty.

APC zombie spotted.

Knowing how men in uniform mistreat civilians daily in Nigeria...somebody is saying we should be discussing how the policy is to be implemented instead of resisting it.

A daft statement considering that The CGS hasn't said that he is taking suggestions from the masses on how he will implement his evil directive.

The truth is that there is no format released concerning implementation so what will happen is that the arms wielding customs chaps will decide for themselves which Car has paid "correct" duty and which hasn't.

The poster is expecting that someone who bought a car 7 yrs ago and was given customs papers should start tracing the dealer to balance the customs. Rubbish!

I dont think this poster lives in Nyja to make such a dull statement. Nobody who actually lives here will support this policy.

Many of you 'liking this man' obviously do not own cars. and are oblivious of the illegality they are about to perpetuate. The real issue here is not about the uniform. Let us not lose sight of that. Customs officers are going to begin stopping cars at will just like the police, VIO , FRSC currently do. Their place of assignment remain the borders and ports. NOT INLAND/MAINLAND.

Excellent comment.

Those "thumbing up" his post want to escape paying what they should have when buying the car in the first place.

In the US, if you are caught for tax evasion, YOU PAY EVERYTHING PLUS INTEREST. AND THEN YOU WOULD GO TO JAIL.

Customs should give a grace period. Make every defaulter pay... in future, you would be diligent in paying the required duty.

well, the senate have made it a uniform issue.

I'm happy yourself acknowledge the illegality of importing the vehicle in the first place. What do you think would happen should you fail to pay a $10 dues on importation in the same countries your godfathers run to with our money? I'm sure you know the answer. I'm sure even you cannot do better as a customs head than this. At least not with this porous border as we have presently where every conceivable rubbish is imported with reckless abandon. Even, should you be a customs officer, how do you think k you can face smugglers with their charms and sophisticated weapons?
Let me enlighten you better by saying this is a strategy to disuade consumers from patronising illegally imported items and thereby stop smugglers from having their way.
I hope in your understanding unless of course you're yourself a smuggler

Thanks for being in the minority of those who are law-abiding.

It's sad to see just how myopic some can be here.

You can't plead ignorance when caught for tax evasion in the developed world. You won't even be given a grace period. Na jail straight

It was a very dumb analysis and unfortunately as you saw, plenty of people who use their hearts rather than their brains to think.

If the Customs and Police start impounding cars, within 2-3 weeks, everyone would rush to get the appropriate registration.

If this continues for a whole year, what do you think would happen if someone wants to sell you a smuggled car in 2018?

You would report him of course!

Re: I Won’t Appear Before Senate Wednesday – Customs CG by bendike:
You must be a civil servant. Because only government pikins that have lived all their life under government paid work think like this. Ok so the owner of the senna should pay for the incompetence of the custom service right? How in the first instance did the vehicle get past the boarder? Who's duty is it to man our boarders? As per underpaying duty, who gave the estimate to the car dealer? During the course of registration of the vehicle, who issued the custom clearance documentation? All points at the customs! One ancient buffoon then comes up to say folks should go back to customs to re validate duty because they want to install checkpoints to check and seize cars, even when i bought the car from a car dealer? That is madness!
It reminds me of the silly military minister of communications years back (olarinwaju?) who tried to shut down business centers that used CALLBACK and INTERNET to make cheaper international calls at N50 when NITEL was charging N400 naira per min. The minister then deployed soldiers to raid business centers claiming "economic Sabotage"
We shouldn't be made to pay for government incompetence.

The policy has been suspended. However, my support for the CG was not based on the policy but on his stand against the bullying tactics of the Senate. Instead of being concerned about pressing issues, they are trying hard to show power. Yesterday, I learnt from an article by Femi Falana that the Senate does not even have the right to summon a CG on policy matters and that there was no law that stated that a CG (especially, one who was never a Customs officer) must wear uniforms. I think we should all plead with the Senate to overlook matters of little to no significance and work on the more pressing ones that would benefit the average Nigerian. Forcing a CG who is not mandated to wear uniforms to wear it will not benefit anyone.

On my way to a middle belt state yesterday, the driver of the bus nearly killed two Customs officers for trying to stop the bus.

When we attacked him seeing the risk he made us pass through (the officers almost shot the bus), he said he will not allow any bas.ta rd take the little he has made since January. He described all you have mentioned here. While I was angry with him, I still showed empathy.

Some Nigerians are yet to understand the gravity of the situation. Na private car owners I pity pass, cos left to those public transporters, they are ready to crush any officer on the highway...
