Does the company have a hr policy?
Full time salaried employees are expected to give two weeks to one month notice before quitting. Same applies to employers. Termination without notice typically has some financial implication.

It is contract or wage or temp workers who can leave without notice.
but if he is still on probation, there is no need giving one month notice.

After reading all the comment, some made sense while some are just outrageous. My candid advice to u is to go to him with an elder and talk things over and write a letter of apology reason for this is because u will Certaininly need him some day for reference
2nd thing u can do is to call him and tell him that he has no right to appear in your house, d least a reputable company does is to write u with an option to reply the mail so in this case he has burnt his hand by coming to ur house with threat. If it goes further dont exchange words with him but just tell him he will hear from ur attorney goodluck

Please NLders,

I'm still a teenager but through with my high school. So i decided to look for money and i got this job to work as supporting staff at a microfinance bank. I worked there for 4 months and stopped working Yesterday after receiving this month salary. I travelled today to register for jamb from my salary and when i got back home, my mum said my boss came looking for me that i must submit my resignation letter. I wrote the letter and gave it to him, he collected it and returned it telling me that i must return the salary. He said i should have given the company one month notice before i would have been eligible for my salary or else the company will come to our house and seize some property. I told him to show me where those terms were written in agreement i signed, he got angry and started calling me names and threatened me. Please what should i do, abeg help me.

NB: I left because of my boss(branch manager) and the remaining loan officer started asking me to do jobs that were not part of
Let met be plane to you. Your boss is right. You should have submitted NOTIFICATION OF RESIGNATION 30 days before. Someone got sued in my former office for causing losses and damages worth 5 million naira for this same incident. His parents came begging but the man refused to forgive him. You don't just run away from your employers.

@Teensway.

Somehow I have a feeling you know what you are doing, your leaving your job the next day after pay reveals you've got it all planned.

If your employment letter requires that you give a prior notice you should have given that to your boss, there are other avenues you could have explore, you could have written a study leave letter it saves you a lot.

Since the did has been done, kindly go with your mother to apologise to your former boss, offer to do a 2 weeks pro bono job with him while he source for a replacement.

You have just started your life bro don't allow people fool you into spoiling your career, you may never need or meet the man again your younger siblings may do, you may even meet his daughter one day who becomes the love of your life. What comes around go around. Respectively appeal to him but don't refund any money to him it's your sweat and you deserve your wages.

Please don't not insult the hand that has once fed you don't listen to such advise, you won't take this from anyone or if your age mate do such to your parents.
Re: I Resigned After Receiving My Salary: Help, Am I In Trouble? by adecz: 4:13pm On Mar 31, 2017
Does your employment letter indicate that you should give one month's notice b4 you resign?

If so, you must give them the last salary if you didn't give them notice.

If it isn't written, then you report to police that the man is intimidating you.... He will stop.
Re: I Resigned After Receiving My Salary: Help, Am I In Trouble? by skiguy123(m): 4:14pm On Mar 31, 2017
From HR experience, everything depends on the terms and conditions stated on your offer letter. But on the Norm, you are to give 2 weeks notice to your employer if you are yet to be confirmed and one month notice if you are confirmed, this is to allow your employer get a replacement and ensure a proper handover. Failure to give notice means you MUST pay back salary in lieu of notice. My bro, you have a long way to go in your career, so i will advised you do the right thing because you do not know when you will need the help of your boss. Why not talk to him and explain why u needed to resign immediately. My bro, we have alot of references here that we have not responded to because staff did not resign properly and were asked to go to their previous employer for clearance. If you were your boss, would you clear such person? You can decide to remove the experience from your CV but that experience might be the only edge you might have over other candidates.

I run a company and I'm going to try to be as objective as possible. I would also advice you as I would my younger brother who is just about to go into the job market.

First of all, it is unfair on any organisation for you to leave without a notice, or leave improperly- regardless of whether it is in the agreement or not. A lot goes into running an organisation especially in Nigeria, and as an employer of labour, you want to be able to count on your staff. When you leave without a proper notice, you are being very unfair to your employer. And even if it is not formally stated, what goes around comes around. You reap what you sow.

Secondly, always remember that you may need that employer in the future. Sometimes, someone who can not pay you much today might be the one to recommend you to the president tomorrow. Always leave a good impression of yourself, whether it's with the employer or even other members of staff (including even the gate man).

That said, I don't think it was proper to ask you to wash clothes or do any tasks that were outside the scope of your employment. I personally would quit as well if that happened to me- giving the proper notice, of course.

I also don't think it is mature for the employer to come to your house to threaten you. He doesn't need to, especially considering that you are young.

So what do I recommend?

I suggest that you tender a proper resignation letter to the organisation. I suggest also that you apologise to him in person, probably in the company of one of your parents.

If I were you, I would also look for the one month salary and pay it back, not because I have to, but because you always reap what you sow. If you are always fair to people, God will always watch out for your own interests. If you don't have it but can get him to forgive you, it's probably fine as well.

If you don't mind me being a little spiritual, permit me to share with you the story of Laban and Jacob.

Laban was an unfair employer to Jacob. He had forced him to work hard and paid him very little. Finally, Jacob fled without notice like you have done. Laban was very angry and chased after Jacob and God had to appear to Laban to ask him not to hurt Jacob. Guess what? Eventually, they settled the quarrel and LABAN BLESSED JACOB AND HIS FAMILY.

One of the reasons why many people never do well is that they don't realise these simple principles. Always do your best to be fair, be of good report, let even the seemingly unfair boss bless you. You never know who will recommend you in the future.

What's wrong with Nairalanders, what's wrong with this generation, what's wrong with some Nigerians, after we will be blaming our leaders for Nigeria's predicament when we can't get the simplest things right, shame. Why have no one called that young boy, I mean the OP to order, what the OP did is wrong and should be condemned cause it is a criminal act purnishable under the law if the MD can present any agreement signed and if the MD was negligent to signing any document with the OP cause he was dealing with a minor then we must still caution the OP cause his action is very wrong.

You went to get a job to meet your needs and that of your family, the MD of the Micro finance bank probably out of pity or in other to cut company cost employed you a minor with trust that you will be of best behavior considering you are young, and instead of you to inform him and the company of your intentions to quit the job because of some reasons you decide to collect your salary at the end of the month and abscond with the salary, leaving your job at the company for who? Do you know what that singular action of yours will cost the company and do you think that company will be carefree next time as to collect a teen again or collect one without going through the proper documentations.

Tomorrow it is folks like the OP that will graduate from the university and be singing to get job for Naija na man know man, yes your action is the reason why companies careless about the poor and focus on people who come from resourceful homes or background, if that man has his way he will make sure you never work in any company ever again by blacklisting your sorry ass, do the honorable thing, write another resignation letter, include the salary or whatever is left and send it back to him with an apology in person and tell him you acted out of ignorance as a teen, trust me the man will forgive you and even ask you to take the salary and even reserve a spot for you when you graduate from college.

I have people under my payroll an I know how hurtful what you did is, very unprofessional, if it were a multinational coy you will be cooling your sorry ass in jail right now and singing, na devil.

What the small boy did is bad. Most of you guys will say there is no job in nigeria but you are killing the bold ones creating jobs. microfinance bank usually requires one on one relationship. there may be customers that this guy will be the only one that knows . Now he left abruptly without notice, without introducing clients to new staff and abandoned work after collecting salary. that is sheer wickedness. And the next thing you will say is that the employer is greedy. When it happens to you as an employer then you will understand how the oga feels

After you submitted your acceptance letter you were supposed to be given a copy of "staff condition of service manual". In that condition of service you are expected to give atleast one month notice of your intention to resign or you pay one month salary to the Bank in case of instant resignation. In your own case, you cheated your employer in two fold. Not giving a one month notice and not paying a month salary to your employer, instead you collected another salary from your employer, these are more reasons why he will come for that money because the board will not take it lightly with the him.

Well I just have few questions for you.
Was there a formal employment process?
E.g - offer letter, employment letter, letter of probation and confirmation if any, an employment contract?
If yes, I will advice you go back an read the clauses embeded therein.
If there was non of the aforementioned, you have nothing to be afraid of.
But if you have any of the aforementioned, mention me and I will advise accordingly.

Op, you should have told him like a month to the date you were ready to resign.

Anyway, just report to a lawyer or go to the police station with your mum or dad and report to the police. Be sure to write a statement. Give the police your boss's details and be honest with them.

All will be well.

you guys are advising the OP wrongly.

The OP regardless of whether he is a small boy or not....was legally employed by a company....he worked out of the job without submitting a resignation letter having collected his salary at the end of the month...that's a breach of contract if i may say.

common sense dictates...if he is going to leave the company...he gives a notice or what ever excuse...which could be going back to school and not abscond from his duty post having collected salary.

if any of you is an employer of labour...would you like to be treated as such by your employee?
Good one bro,
But your employer can terminate your appointment without explanation or sometimes transfer of aggression not minding your commitment to his job and what happen to you and your family afterward.

Mr employer there are too many cheap unemplyeed graduate out there just employ one and move on.

Nigerian companies are thieves. You inform them beforehand of your intention to resign "Na problem", you don't "na problem". The only thing they use the knowledge for is to when to run away with your salary.
That was how one refused to pay a friend after she gave him 3 months notice... They keep on using cash shortage as excuse til the 3 month elapse. These people know that most Nigerians won't resort to suing them for the fear of using the expected cash to service a court case as well as losing the favour of their ex-employer when the time comes.
No wonder Nigerians are now getting smarter by resigning after collecting their salary...
