With the current increasing cost in building a house in Nigeria, and with the Nigeria Culture/Mentality
“I must have my own House” a lot of Nigerians have been looking for various building material options which are relatively cheaper and perform the same function as the conventional ones.

One of such material options which I will be focusing on this thread is Expanded Polystyrene (EPS), This material is strong, durable, light weight, water resistance with excellent thermal insulation which is very popular in Environmentally “Green” Homes.

Expanded Polystyrene is an affordable and incredibly sustainable choice in the construction circle due to versatility and performance.

It can be used in construction as a structural base infill for example in floor Slab, Roads, Bridges Railway infrastructure, or as a structural element of its own, Roof Eaves, wall (partition), Décor Materials.

Structural test carried on EPS has showing that after used in construction for 30 years still remain strong as when first used.

I will be focusing on Polystyrene Roof Cornices (Parapet) in the next few days

If you are in a dilemma on the cost of constructing Roof Parapet for your building, or your building is located on a loose soil, I will advise you to go for Polystyrene roof parapet due to the following reasons.

It is Light in weight
It is cheaper compared to concrete (that is it eliminates the cost of wood form work both material and labour, less reinforcement)
It is faster and easy to install.
It is Neater than most parapet as it has been formed using a machine.

Let us look at how Polystyrene Parapet is installed

The proper way of installing Polystyrene is first to install a 2 x 2 softwood around the building area where the parapet will seat to take levels and also to make sure it is set on a straight line. In order to reduce cost you can make use of rope line to take reference between the two corners of the side of a building and when you are sure it is straight, then nail at interval of 600mm (2 feets) and place the parapets on it.

The Second stage is fastening of the Roof parapet to the open roof beam reinforcement ( less I forget you can either leave part of the roof beam reinforcement say 1” open when you are doing the roof beam casting or cast the roof beam after the Roof parapet has been fastening to the roof reinforcement with the aid of binding wire and nails).

The next stage is that a light casting of saying 1½” is done on the roof beam to cover all open reinforcement.

The Last stage is to screed the joints of the Roofing parapet to have a uniform and smooth surface.

Next time we will be looking at the cost of Polystyrene parapet as against in situ Parapet.

My ogas (these people I am mentioning don’t know me because I have been a silent reader of some of their posts) Skimanski , spyder880 , mufutau55 , Segcymoor , Twinskenny , saydfact , FastShipping , rotecch77 , ArcBoB , ba7man , CASTOSVILLA , abdulwastecx , thewatcher2020 , cribpark , lawyer and many others not mentioned in this post
In the house, you can tell us about your experience using polystyrene as a building material either as roof parapet, or fill in for concrete, etc.

I've used Polystyrene material as hollow pots in slab, light weight is an advantage - interesting to see its extensive use thou as parapets too.

Polystyrene is a very nice material to work with, it's not yet well known, however very soon, people will begin to sway its way. The market is ready to have something fresh. personal opinion is that im fed up of the conventional mortar and concrete buildings and polystyrene is something fresh.

it's been used for internal partitions, POP Cornices, window sills and even some furniture and interior pieces. looking forward to new and interesting applications

Thank you o bross. I think polystyrene is a very good material, it is a matter of time before people start using it in large quantities.

I have an ongoing job that I am the consultant and I proposed the use of the polystyrene for the slab (waffle slab) because of its light weight and cost effectiveness.

I am also working on a large scale low cost housing scheme where polystyrene will be sue for the flat roof and some interior designs at these stage we are still looking for investors to key into this initiative.

I am ready to go into detail discussion with whoever wants to use polystyrene for any type of work.

Most people are always very careful about items/ Materials that are different from the conventional ones they are use to and always wait for who has used a product. i am not against this but i will like us to know that change is a constant and that technological advancement is a continuous thing.

Let us look at the what a Parapet is in a roof and what are their functions in a Building.

Parapet in roof is a wall-like structure at the edge of the roof, The parapet can rise above the cornice of the building, and rounded parapets are often used as decorative features,Most flat roofs have a parapet.
Functions of parapets include
1) The parapet stops the wind from being able to get between the roof and the exterior walls of the home.

2)Another safety feature of a parapet roof is that it stops objects and detritus from being blown onto or falling onto the ground below.

3) They can hide an unsightly roofing material, or hide equipment that is placed on the roof (such as a rooftop venting system).

4) Parapets also serve an aesthetic purpose.

Polystyrene Parapets are made of different sizes and designs just as you have in other forms of Parapets.
The major available ready sizes includes but not limited to
300 x 300 Parapets which is suitable for bungalows
350 x 350 Parapets Still suitable for bungalows
450 x 450 Parapets suitable for a Storey Building
450 x 600 Parapets suitable for a storey Upward
450 x 350 parapets suitable for bungalows and storey buildings
400 x 400 Parapets Suitable for both bungalows and storey buildings.

Most polystyrene Roof parapets are fire retardant ( Treated against burning) and are very strong to carry heavy weights.

It helps reduce the weight on a building which has already been increased by the number of columns and slab that has been cast on the ground.

Do you know that if a building is to heavy on the ground and the kind of soil there is not to good it causes un-uniform settlement especially when one side of the building has more weight than others.

you can reduce the weight of building by the use of Polystyrene materials for in-fill for your slab. ( this is a topic for another day)

i will not like to bore us with to much information today as we will are still much on this topic.
below are look of Polystyrene parapet and where installed.

How do you anchor this fascia? can you throw more light on that aspect, pls?

Truefederalism:
How do you anchor this fascia? can you throw more light on that aspect, pls?

The Best way to Hang the polystyrene fascia is before casting your roof beam, The some form of nails are driven into the back of the polystyrene fascia and binding wires are fastening into it. also the binding wires are hooked on some parts of the polystyrene fascia, the distance between the fasteners shouldn't be beyond 1 meter.
the binding wires coming out at the back of the polystyrene fascia is now tied unto the reinforcement rods that have been provided for the roof beam.
after this has been done you can now cast your roof beam.
Note the polystyrene fascia can be used on an existing building that you are planing to give a face lift, as you don't need to provide extra columns as the weight doesn't have much impact on the building.

Is it the same polystyrene material used to package electronics that you're talking about? Is it water proof and light weight? How's the durability? I have a great interest in this for other purpose than construction.

It is the same used for electronics but are treated separately to serve different purposes. It is water tight and it is used for coolers and other agricultural purposes.

I wont advice its use in the ground;
1. The joints can't be waterproofed, even with the best of methods, water can hardly not find its way
2. The material itself would allow water through, and might eventually give way from wear due to over exposure to nature.
3. If the earth pulls, its not regid enough to prevent a collapse, polystyrene is a light material, even blocks cannot withstand the pull of mother earth.

Well I have not used it for soak away before and can't advice on it for now,as the joint might not be totally seal, but the material itself will not allow water to come in between, that is why it can be used for cooler boxes. And on the issue of collapse or giving way it has been proven that after use in a road construction, it retains its shape only about 5% compression in the ground after 30 years.
Maybe what I can do is to send a mail to the manufacturers and if they have used it they should send me pictures of it, which I will upload here

Then i want to believe the polystyrene is reinforced and cast in concrete - this is using polystyrene as a formwork and not as a wall...
I guess what morningsta is asking is just pre-forming polystyrene to the shape of a septic tank and burying it.

Polystyrene alone cannot withstand that load - expect its reinforced and concrete poured in thereby changing it to a formwork - However, please get across to the manufacturers and we all can learn from it.

Thanks.
