''The pure fundamentalist concerns himself with production, consumption, stocks, and other basic economic data, viewing these as the causes and price as the effect, while the pure technician regards price as its own cause. In fact, to draw a sharp line of choice between these two approaches is not the best policy. Price itself should also be regarded as a fundamental. It can play the role of cause or effect or both under different circumstances.''

''a bear market that has persisted for a year is unlikely to form its bottom in a week, nor is a two-month bull market likely to take a year to form a top. A trader should keep in mind the duration of recent major moves and expect commensurate time periods for the formation of the current pattern. (Patience is an important virtue — hastiness rarely pays).'' - Amos Hostetter on Time and techniques

Nice write up @ BullbearmrkBullbearmkt,

You didn't mention a few other methods to use moving averages.
An important one is when price has moved 2 - 3 standard deviations away from the moving average line.
At such times, the trader looks for reversal signals in order to take a mean reversion trade (that is a trade back to the moving average line).
In my honest opinion, studying measures of central tendency like mean, median, mode etc without adding the use of measures of dispersion like range, standard deviation etc is not complete.

Great job done all the same.
Thanks for the article.
Good point meshpips. My concern about using 2 - 3 S.D for reversion trading is that it works well in highly volatile environments. NSE generally is less volatile. A true range or better still price actions will best suite our environment.

Cheers...

In addition to what BullBearMkt has written about moving averages, I recommend that traders find time to read about VWAP (Volume Weighted Average Price), an important metric used by professional traders.

It is a modified type of moving average that uses the volume traded at various price levels as a weighting factor.

Traders get a little extra commission if they are able to to buy below an up - sloping VWAP.

Trading the mean reversion method I recommended above will guarantee the trader very efficient entries into the market.

...good entry idea bro
I think Morgan Capital provides something similar & called it AWP (Average Weighted Price). Not sure if volume is included. Nice to confirm though...

revealed that the parallel market exchange rate, which opened the week at N405 per dollar and dropped to N385 per dollar on Tuesday, dropped further to N380 per dollar yesterday, translating to N5 appreciation for the naira Consequently, the naira has gained N20 or 4.9 per cent this week in the parallel market. Bureau De Change sources attributed the appreciation to the increased dollar supply to the segment from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). On Tuesday, the CBN sold $20,000 to each BDCs, up from $10,000 the previous week. The apex bank is expected to further sell $20,000 to each of the 3,185 BDCs today, thus boosting dollar supply. This, according to President, Association of Bureaux De change Operators of Nigeria (ABCON), Alhaji Aminu Gwadabe, will prompt further appreciation of the naira before the close of business today. The increase dollar supply to BDCs is part of the apex bank’s intervention in the foreign exchange market aimed to addressing the wide gap .

Very apt.
We've got to realise that it's not just about the frequency of trades or number of JIJO's that makes you the most profitability. Losses are also accumulated in buying and selling commissions if one is not careful. The broker become the winner ironically.

hmmm.how true ogas?

Its very correct. Recall, Eco bank took Otudeko to court over N2b unpaid loan given to Honeywells and the matter is still there....This is pure abuse of corporate governance and should be thoroughly investigated and perpetrators brought to justice....I think CBN needs to also come up with a circular PEGGING the chairmanship tenure of a bank to 5 years and must not hold shares either directly or indirectly in the company. In addition, former managing director of a listed company cannot occupy chairmanship position until after 10 years of leaving office.

These will strengthen investors confidence, protect shareholders fund and engender a virile financial system.

FCMB:
People that want to buy at N1.00 put heavy bids below N1.00 while they mop at N1.00.... grin
If you join them there, they keep mopping as the up trend slowly gathers momentum and leave you behind... grin
A member here once regreted insisting to get Fidelity @ N0.82 only for it to go on full bid the next day till it was above N1.00.
This is why we must be very NIMBLE...and consider entry not at A POINT but A RANGE... grin
