"So, this is your room and these are your roommates" Madam Osas informed. I curtsied and stared at the six girls in the room sharing a bowl of eba and soup.

"You better kill yourself because of food o"
Madam Osas shouted at them and hissed. Walking out, she swayed her massive hips left and right. She was a plump woman with a round face and small eyes. Her skin was a shade of two to three colours. It was pretty obvious she was bleaching. "Good evening.

My name is Victoria Okunyimwense Okunague" I introduced. I felt like creeping into a hole when they all burst into laughter. A particular girl was rolling on the floor laughing boisteriously. Another almost choked on air as she dropped the big roll of Eba on the carpet and started laughing noisily like her life depended on it. I just stood there confused.

"Welcome. I am Ada" A skinny girl said, stuffing a large quantity of soup in her mouth.

"Ahah Ada, you too get long throat. Na only you dey chop" A girl who so much resembled a bird complained, her face masked in anger.

"Welcome Vicky, I hope you sabi how to dance here o, because na dance we dey dance for club o. Madam Osas don tell you na?" The girl said again wrapper tied up her body asked.

I nodded. "My name is Tomi" Another girl introduced.

"I am Filomena" the girl that her face seemed like that of a bird said.

"Shut up, your name na Filo" Ada mouthed, washing her hands inside a bowl.

"Na Heritage my mama name me o. But I am also called sweet honeypot" A tall girl said as she stood up and wiped her hands.

"Welcome am Jessica" A girl said in a gentle tone and flashed me a smile.

"Am Zainab but you can call me Zain sexy" The last one introduced and stretched her hand for a handshake

After the greetings and pleasantries, I moved my bag to one corner of the room and left the room. I seriously don't know how I would come with six girls in a small room with one bed. I returned back to Madam Osas who had brought me from Benin to Port harcourt after the terrible incidence that happened to me. She promised me on my way to PH that she would take care of me and make sure I always have a roof over my head.

"Ma" I said, bending my knees in respect. When I got to her room somewhere at the backyard of the room I was to share with the girls, She was painting her nails and chewing aloud a gum.

"Ehnehn, Vicky. Come and sit down na"

I smiled and sat down just beside her bed which had already sunk inside at the center.

"I hope the girls have introduced themselves to you"

"Yes ma" I said and nodded as my eyes traced a rat that ran from her wardrobe to the edge of the room.

"Victoria, Like I was saying in the car. Here we have rules and those rules must be obeyed"
She began and then looked at me to see if I was paying attention.

"From 6:30 in the morning to 5:00pm, you will join the rest at my canteen outside to sell food. I sell rice and beans and on fridays, I sell fufu. When it is 5:00pm, you will go and change into a nice dress, I will give you some now for a start and you will follow them to the club to dance. You must make sure you bring nothing less than 5000 inside this house or else there will be trouble. No phones are allowed and no boyfriend. Is that clear?" She asked, popping her gum.

I nodded and stared down at my feet.

"Victoria, what happened to you here?" She asked, pointing to the scar on my neck.

"Erm. When I was young, Wall gecko fell on me and scratched my neck when I was sleeping" I explained.

"Sorry dear"

"Tell Ada to serve you your food so you will have enough strength to work tomorrow" She said.

I thanked her and made for the door.
"One last thing Victoria, how old are you?"

"Nineteen ma" I replied. She nodded and I took my leave. When I got back to the room, the girls were sleeping and there was no space on the bed.
I sat on the floor and touched my tummy. I was famished.

"Vic. Are you not going to sleep?" A voice startled me. I turned my head to see Jessica coming from outside.

"Oh, I thought you were sleeping with the rest" I said, slimming down my polka dot gown.
She quickly hid something inside a ghana must go bag and came to sit beside me.

"I don't sleep early" She said as she crossed her legs. My stomach brawled loudly, announcing to me it had not eaten anything since.

"Hmm.. Are you hungry?" She asked.

"Erm.. Yes, madam Osas asked me to tell Ada to give me food but I don't want to wake her up"
She smiled and tiptoed outside the room. After five minutes, she tiptoed back with two plates of Eba and soup. What the girls ate before sleeping.

I quickly dug in, without even washing hands. Jessica just stared widely at me as the big balls of Eba kept rolling down my throat. She gave me a sweet smile and began to eat her food too. After eating, I took a satchet of water placed across the room and sat down just beside her. She took in her last ball of Eba and sighed.

"You are sweating." I giggled.

"You can't blame me Victoria. I didn't really eat much the other time. They cheat me most times and cut small share for me and sometimes, they don't even give me food"

"But why is that?" I asked.

"Hmmm. I don't know but it is obvious Ada, Madam Osas' favourite who shares food doesn't like me and she has also turned the backs of the rest against me but I see them as my younger sisters and leave them alone. Besides, what can I do?" As she explained, I couldn't help but pity her. She appeared to be the oldest and most matured.

"Na condition make crayfish bend" She said and wiped a tear that pricked her right eye.

"What do you mean?" I asked, looking at her intently. I really wanted to know what brought her here. I believed all of the girls must have a story to tell just like me. Most of them were in my age group and we should all be in our various schools or learning trade.

"That, my dear is a story for another day. Let's sleep because of work tomorrow. But please make sure you don't step on Ada'a toes. Please, beware of that girl" She warned and held my palms, squeezing it tight.

"Goodnight Victoria"

"Goodnight" I replied curtly.

The next day, I woke up and said my prayers. Others were asleep so I hurried to the bathroom so I could have my bathe before them. After bathing, I dressed up and sat down, waiting for the rest to get up.

Fifteen minutes later, Ada stirred and rubbed her eyes. She opened them widely and spanked the rest so they could wake up. I quickly tapped Jessica before Ada could get to her side. She woke up and said her prayers. I was beginning to like her. She was cool and reserved. After they bathed and got dressed, we all went out together. Ada retrieved a key from her breastpocket and opened the canteen. The canteen was a big one with Maggi and Coca cola banners hung on the walls. The counter was a wide one and behind it were huge pots and spoons, trays, cutleries and empty crates of softdrinks.

Tomi got a broom behind the door and began to sweep while the rest of us stayed outside. When she was done, Ada passed me a towel to clean the tables and chairs. After cleaning, We went to the back where the canteen kitchen was and transferred food the caterers had cooked. Only rice and stew was ready, the beans was still on fire. When we finished arranging, Jessica nudged me and whispered.

"Don't worry, you will get used to it soon"

I returned her smile and sat down beside her. Customers started trooping in in twos and threes. Most of them were drivers and mechanics nearby. Filo took their orders and serving started. Heritage handed a plate of rice and water to me and pointed to a man for me to go and serve.

"Hia! Omalicham, egom, beautiful angel, are you new here?" A pot bellied man asked me in a disgusting Igbo accent. I cleared my throat and gave a cool smile.

"Yes" I replied and made to leave but was almost dumbstruck when a tender slap landed on my ass. I turned to face him angrily and wanted to dish out insults to him when Ada came around and faced me.

"What is it newbie? Don't you know we serve all kinds of food here?"

“What do you mean Ada? I am here to sell food and dance, not my body” I said back at her. When Madam Osas spoke to me about it yesterday, she only said I would help her in selling food then dance so I can make money for her and myself” I defiantly explained.

I looked around and saw that we were already drawing unnecessary attention and I didn’t want anyone to think that as a newbie, I was already this loud. Ada scoffed and shoved me aside. Some other annoying customers came, wanting to harass me and I succeeded in putting them in their places. I was not a call worker.

When it was 4:30pm, a big jeep pulled in front of the canteen and Madam Osas alighted in a short tight sleeveless animal skin gown. The gown did nothing to conceal her body flaps and excess fats in her tummy, hips and legs.

“Welcome Ma” I greeted as I packed some empty plates on the table. I looked at Ada to see if she would report me but she was busy chattering away with a young man.

“How are you Vic. I can see that you have blended in a bit” She said, putting her bag on the counter. The other girls greeted and she told me to come with her to her room straight away. I signaled to Jessica, Zainab and Tomi who were friendly to me that I would be right back.

I shoved off the hand of the last customer that wanted to cup my breasts in his hands and hissed. I was surprised madam Osas saw that but she pretended like she didn’t. I carefully trailed behind her and we got to her room. “Sit down” She ordered and opened a big travelling bag. She rummaged through and handed to me five dresses.

Three mini skirts and two skimpy spaghetti.

“Ada is in charge of the makeup and shoes and before you go let me see you” She said.

I mumbled a thank you and left her room. I got to our room and met the girls already dressing up. I asked Jessica if it wasn’t too early to go to a club by 5:00pm but she said that we had to go there early, so we could dance and set the mood. I nodded and made to leave the room.

“Where are you going?” Zainab asked as she looked into the mirror to check herself out.
“I want to go and change” I replied.

“Why can’t you change here? No be wetin you get for back and front we sef get?”

“Ahah. Leave the poor girl alone. She just got here yesterday and she definitely cant be comfortable around us yet” Heritage said.

I managed a smile and walked out of the room to change. I locked the door behind me and rested on the wall. Tears slid down my cheeks as I thought about my secret again. The secret no one except my late parents knew.

My mom had done all she could to help me so I could at least be proud of being a girl. It was during one of those nights she carried sacrifices to different T-junctions that she was killed by armed robbers.

My father was also bitten by a snake in his farm and died two months ago and I was left alone, abandoned by my relatives. It was when I was begging for alms that Madam Osas saw me, wound down the car window and gave me her address. She promised to help me if I could come to her house the following day.

“Victoria. Are you done? Time is going” Jessica’s voice jolted me from my reverie.

“A minute please” I said as I put on the top and the mini skirt. I wasn’t comfortable with the great amount of flesh it revealed but what could I do? I just had to dance to whatever music Madam Osas, or should I say life brings so I could save and buy myself a Jamb form.
I unlocked the door and hurried out.

“I am sorry girls. I had problem fixing the straps of this top” I gave a good excuse which they seemed to buy. I sat down and Ada started applying makeup on my face.

“Ada, easy please” I eventually had to speak up when the blunt tip of the eye pencil was pricking my skin.

She scoffed and continued, this time more painful.

After the makeup, I wore a 5 inches heel and went to Madam Osas’s room. She reminded me of the rules and that I must make sure I had 5000 naira with me when coming back home. She also added that I must not follow anyone home; I had to come back with the girls by 5am sharp. She said that was another rule she forgot to tell me.

I nodded and walked out of the room.
How a newcomer would make 5k before dawn was something I badly wanted to know.

When we arrived at a big club called Soundbar, I felt my heart producing some gbim gbim sound. I had never been to a club before in my life and I didn't know what to expect.

I walked behind Jessica uneasily, almost stumbling. My heart kept beating fast as if a man man was inside beating a drum with uneven rhythms. The beats from the club increased as we approached.

"Shadow, how far na" Ada greeted one of the bouncers dressed in a black V-neck top and blue jean. He smiled and grabbed her ass, then squeezed and spanked it.

"Chill na" Ada giggled as she placed a finger on his lips and popped a kiss in the air. It was as if Ada was the leader of the clique. The rest of them just fell 'by the way'.

The bouncers stared at me, Not breaking the eye contact. Their eyes continued to linger on me as they took in every detail of my physical profile and I almost felt like dissolving into tiny particles. I scratched my thigh nervously and looked down.

"Leave am, na our babe she be" Ada mouthed as she raised a brow.

"Hi" I mumbled and sent a small smile.

"Hello" They replied, not returning my smile. Their faces were still and strict.

Ada led the way inside and we followed suit. My loud music from the speakers nearly made me go numb. I squinted my eyes as I trailed behind them.

They stopped in front of a long lounge and placed their satchels on it. They started whinning, twisting and shaking their bums while I just sat down and watched them.

"Madam, see the way you sat down like you brought us here, abeg stand up jare" Ada shouted.

"Don't you know how to dance? Like tweaking, twisting. Like this" Tomi spoke, swaying her body left and right like it were an elastic body.
Heritage joined as she held my hands and pulled me up.

"I can't do this"

It was already 9pm and I had not made more than two hundred naira. The other girls already had more than two thousand. I was trying so hard to dance and shake everything. Plus they also taught me different body movements and styles. From shoki to Sekem to dab and all. I was really trying to shake my stiff body.

Some other set of girls trooped in with big men who reeked of big bucks. I watched in awe as money, I mean real money flew all around their bodies. At one section in the club were some Niggas sniffing in, drinking and smoking. Another section had some strippers in it probably waiting for their clients.

I stood, shaking my legs so my rigid bum would at least bounce up and down if it couldn't do me the honour of tweaks.

I looked at Ada and saw her grinding hard against a bald fat guy's body. Heritage and Tomi were dancing at the same corner while Zainab, Filo and Jessica were changing positions. They would leave the guys they were dancing with after he must have sprayed virtually all his life savings and go meet the new ones just coming in with cash stock in their pockets.

"How much have you made?" Jessica questioned loud enough for me to hear.

"Five hundred naira now." I swooped behind her and spoke inside her ears. She midly shook her head and assured me I would make 5k before dawn or Perhaps If I couldn't, she would give me part of her money. She was the only one I was comfortable around and trusted because she was matured. Sometimes, I would see pain in her eyes but she would quickly hide it and cheer up. One could tell she had alot going through her mind but she struck me as someone strong enough to bear it all and I believed when I gain her trust, she would confide in me and tell me her story.

"Victoria. Steal this wallet on the table!" Tomi said, slightly pointing to a brown wallet on the table. She must have deciphered that I had not made enough.

I looked back and front but no one was watching as everyone was dancing away. I heard my beatings increased as I bent down and stylishly took the purse. As I was about unzipping my shoulder bag to put it inside, I felt two quick taps on my shoulder.

I turned and saw Jessica. She hurried me up and we walked to the restroom when we were sure no one saw us and the Monte blanc wallet was safe in my bag.

“Open it” Jessica said. Before I Could open, the door flipped open. Making me go numb. Jessica froze and leaned close to the wall like she was summoning some forces so the wall could open.
My heart stopped when footsteps started approaching where we were. I looked at the mirror and saw Tomi looking around. Jessica looked too and hissed.

“We are here jur”

“How I wan take know na” Tomi protested as she bolted the door and walked up to us. I sighed and fished out the wallet. I closed my eyes and passed it to Tomi.

“Open please” I said, feeling my heart doing some sort of exercise. I had never in my life stolen before. Even when Ekaette and I stole a bush meat from a woman’s pot at the back of her compound in Benin because we were hungry, I had insisted we took it back and ask for forgiveness. I didn’t have that kind of mind. Stealing? It was a big no for me.

“Shit!” Tomi let out a loud groan and hissed.

“E be like say luck no dey your side o. which kain head you get?” She jokingly said and went out.

Jessica pulled me closer to her and assured me all will be well. She told me she would go and try get some more money so hers could complete and she could give me the rest. I nodded and watched her leave.

I further unzipped the wallet and I had to hiss loud when I saw the content again. Old papers, dirty chewed gums, cigarette, scratched recharge cards, a pack of condom and a fifty naira torn note.

I hissed again and flung the wallet away. I walked out of the restroom into the club booming with loud, soul tearing music.

“Hi” A small boy of about seventeen years greeted.
I felt irritated and somewhat disgusted as I looked at him. He was wearing a Chelsea jersey and shorts. His hair was barbed in a ‘punk’ style and he had dark plump lips.

“I am greeting you girl” He said again as he made to grab my waist to his side but I was smart enough to tug off his hand.

“Please go and carry your JAMB textbooks and get the hell out of my face scumbag” I shot.

I didn’t know why I was angry but I guessed I lashed out my aggression on him. I had not made half of the expected cash and a wandering teenager who I was almost sure borrowed money to come to the club was trying to chat me up. I hissed as I started walking away. “Mtchew. Ashawo” I heard him yell.

“Na your mama be ashawo. Ughue Gbehu!(big head!)” I cursed loud enough for him to hear. Thankfully, the bouncers were busy gulping down shots upon shots of beer so they had not even heard me shout.

I joined Tomi and Zainab where they were and started dancing with them.

‘’See this one, let us take it” Tomi said into my ears as her eyes rested on a big swollen wallet.

“See, Tomi. I am not a thief” I puckered my face and placed my hands over my chest.

“Look at someone I wan help o” She said and moved closer as she looked left and right to see if someone was watching. In my mind I wondered why any sane person would leave a wallet on the table and go and dance all in the name of fun. Or was it the effect of beer? Who knew?

Tomi buried the wallet in her bag and started walking to the restroom. I followed suit.

Once we were in the safest corner of the Ladies, Tomi brought out the wallet and opened it. “Osanobua!” I screamed in shock.

Tomi smiled and winked at me.

“I told you, I don’t know the kind of head you brought to this world o. me am always catching big big fish. You have to follow me to Oshogbo to go and wash your head in that big river with soap and…”

“Tomi! E don do abeg” I cut her off and clicked my tongue.

“Tomi! E don do abeg” I cut her off and clicked my tongue.

She brought out the large amount of cash and wet her fingers with spit before sitting down on one of the toilet seats and started counting the money. I just stared at her bewildered as she flipped the notes one by one.

“Twenty seven. Twenty eight. Twenty nine”

“Thirty!” I completed it for her as I almost jumped out of my skin.

Tomi smiled and patted her cheeks.
“Chai. Oluwatomi Omiyomi. The spirit of your mother has not left you” She said with glee.
I smiled and tapped her arm gingerly.

“Ehnehn? What?”

“Tomi, please na” “Tomi Tome!” I hailed.

“It’s because you are a new girl o. I no sabi how dem dey do nice nice o” She said and started counting some naira notes.

She handed six thousand naira to me and put the rest inside her bag. She threw the wallet away and left.

“Thanks Tomi. God go bless you well well” I said as I picked up the wallet. I was not happy things had to come to this but I had no choice. I must give madam Osas five thousand if I didn’t want her to have my head grilled and served in a plate with pepper soup. The warning Heritage and Filomena had sounded to me was scary. I wouldn’t want to be in her black book so soon.
I tucked the money inside the wallet and tried zipping it but the zip had worn out probably because of the force Tomi used on it when she wanted to open it.

I unbarred the door and joined Jessica who was dancing at the heart of the club.

“How much have you made?” I asked her.
“Four thousand naira o” She replied.

“Let’s go and rest jur. I will give you one thousand naira to complete it” I assured her and grabbed her hand

“Here it is ma” I said as I stretched my hands and handed over the money to Madam Osas. A wide smile formed at the corner of her lips and they later parted to show her milky white teeth with some yellow stains on the molars.

She spread her legs apart and dipped her hand inside the big bowl of water on the wooden stool. She smiled as she counted the money.

“Hmm. Victoria. I am impressed o. If you continue like this, you will see that you will become my favourite just like Ada”

“Thanks ma” I curtsied and left the room with my heart full. I was happy I did well and she was impressed.

I got outside and saw the other girls lined up in front of the door, waiting for their names to be called so they could do delivery. I squeezed Tomi’s hand and thanked her. Then playfully tickled Jessica.

“Filo! Filomena” Madam Osas called.
Filo made a sign of the cross and heaved a sigh. Pushing the door open, she walked with small strides into the room. she was the only one looking down. Her money probably wasn’t complete.

“What’s wrong with Filo” I eagerly nudged Jessica.

“I heard her money was stolen. She accused Ada since they are both close and Ada is the only one that knows where she keeps her money. You know how Ada is now, she dished it out to her and they were both fighting before Madam Osas called us to come and deliver” Jessica explained. She swirled her tongue on her lower lips and scratched her nose.

Shrugging my shoulders, I dashed to the room to get a towel and was about leaving when Ada called me back. She had delivered before me so it was only her in the room with me.

“What is it Ada?” I asked, pouting my lips up in a way that sent her a message that I wasn’t in for any nonsense.

“I don’t even know what you think of yourself. Why don’t you remove your clothes in the room like the other girls? What are you hiding that we don’t have? Or do you have more than me?”

“Ada, It’s not your business please. I’m not just comfortable undressing before girls I hardly know. So please stop making things up out of nothing” With that, I picked up my sponge case and scurried to the bathroom.

I got to the bathroom and was lucky to find a full bucket of water.
Hot tears glistened my eyes as I removed my towel and hung it on a nail inclined to the wall. I didn’t know how much longer the secret had to stay as a secret before it got exposed, especially now that I was living amidst six people. I buried my head in my palms and let tears roll freely. I bent down and poured a bowl of water on my head, hoping it would relieve the pains in my heart and whisper a solution to my ears. If only that was possible.

I quickly finished my bathe when I heard loud screams outside. I wrapped my towel firmly on my body, making sure it was well enfolded to its edge. I opened the door and hastened my steps. “You are a thief Ada.

A bloody basterdized thief” Filo’s voice echoed. I peeped into Madam Osas’ room and saw that her room was empty. She wasn’t in the room. That was why they had the guts to start their combat.

Heritage quickly walked past me with a bucket of water and entered the bathroom like she didn’t give a damn.

I heard two loud slaps as I shifted the curtain and entered the room.

“Yekpa!” That was all that escaped from my lips.
Ada was the one that slapped Filo apparently. Filo held her sore cheek and pounced on Ada. Making sure she bit her hard on her flesh. She sent two slaps to Ada’s cheeks and started tearing off her clothes.

“Abeg, where is this Filo girl from? I like her o” I said, stifling a silent giggle.

“Ah. She’s from warri o. Her warri name na Ese” Zainab informed.

I dabbed away the water from my body with towel and continued watching the fight.

“Ehnehn? So na you thief my lace bra and G-string abi?” Filo exclaimed when she successfully ripped off Ada’clothing, leaving her exposed.

Ada seized the opportunity to stand up, hence catching Filo unawares. She reached for a plastic stool across the room and threw it at her.

Ada seized the opportunity to stand up, hence catching Filo unawares. She reached for a plastic stool across the room and threw it to her.
Filomena dodged and before we knew it.

They started throwing every available thing they could lay their hands on. Hangers, belts, shoes, creams and all started flying to and fro the room. I quickly picked my undies, a polo shirt and black pleated skirt and ran out of the room. I went to Madam Osas’ room and dressed up.

“You will meet me at the canteen Jessy” I said and waved to Jessy with a band meant for my hair and the wallet Tomi had stolen the previous night. I wanted to be keeping things inside the wallet since it was big enough and I had no purse. Only a old satchel given to me by Ada which she strictly said was meant for our outings. I got to the canteen and did the necessary.

I arranged what had to be arranged and moved the plates and spoons outside. I sat down, waiting for customers as I watched the people of port Harcourt move up and down the streets, to their places of work and wherever they had to go. Different sizes and models of cars sped fastly on the road like there was some sort of ‘fast and furious’ game on. I watched young boys and girls hawk different things. I felt pure pity for them. They were people just like me who were hopeless but had not given up on their existences.

They still wanted to live and find something worth it to do with their lives. They were hustlers like me, looking for what to eat. When my heart was getting heavier and more pained with the sights before me. I looked down and wiped away fat lines of tears that were streaming down my cheeks. I fiddled with the wallet. I zippered a small compartment in the wallet and was surprised to see a complementary card of an important person in Port Harcourt. The name rang a bell. I exclaimed when It finally dawned on me that Tomi had robbed the grand son of Chief Adewole Cokers, the founder of the great empire of Kella Energy in Port Harcourt and Lagos.

I sat up from the bench and went to caterers at the backyard to inform them I wanted to go and pee. I had taken fifty naira with me before going to the canteen so I hurried to a nearby call center to call the number on the card.

"God, Me am just trying to feel less guilty by confessing o, I just hope this man doesn't arrest me. Cause all these rich people sef" I thought in my heart as I sat on the plastic chair and waited for the call to be picked.

"Hello" Came a deep baritone voice that almost sent me flying to the sky from the chair. I cleared my throat abruptly and stood up so I could speak to him well, since the lady at the call center was almost looking intently into my soul. She had been looking at me somehow since I got there. Some people didn't just know how to look at people at all.

"Errm. Good morning" I greeted curtly.

"Yes? Who is this and how may I help you?" He spoke again.

"Excuse me, am I speaking with Mr. Coker?" I asked and looked at the card so I could get his name.

"Mr. Paul Coker?" I asked again once my eyes caught his first name.

"Yes please. How may I help you" "Please, I want to see you for something" I said, scrounging up my nose.

"What is that? Besides I don't know who this is and I would be having a board meeting in a few minutes. I am a busy man."

I rolled my eyes and furrowed a frown.

"I know. Everyone knows how busy you are since you are the only one controlling the businesses your grandfather left for you. I would just like you to know what happened to the thirty thousand naira and the wallet you put on the glass table at the club sometime early this morning" I changed the way and tone I was responding to him. I wanted to see him badly so I could tell him everything.

I was pretty bad in keeping things like this at heart. If I managed not to feel guilty for a whole 24-hours, guilt would envelop me for a longer time eventually. My conscience wasn't helping matters. Always pricking me every now and then so could we please get this whole shit over with? I mean by confessing to the owner and be set free.

I sighed and waited for his response. I looked at the phone to see if it had disconnected but the call was still on. I sighed again.

"Where would you meet me at?" His voiced boomed into the speaker loudly.

"Excuse you? Where would I meet you at or where would you meet me at?" I asked, feeling like I had just been trampled on with that question. "Look, as much as I am industrious and prudent, thirty thousand naira really doesn't mean that much to me. I am only agreeing to meet you because I want to get to see the face of the thief. A lady for that matter"

"Are you bringing the cops?" I asked as my heart did some flip flops at intervals. I was just trying to seem like I had guts so he wouldn't think of me as a lunkhead. I really valued my self esteem and I would never allow it to get crumbled to the ground like a pack of cards just because of a rich fellow.

Most times, I just wished no one was rich. I wished everyone had the same amount of money and there is nothing like the rich getting richer or the poor getting poorer. At least, these rich folks wouldn't ride on the poor ones.

"The cops? I would sure be accomapanied by them, you should know just with a tap of my finger, I would have them at my Beck and call. So please hurry up and text me the address now. Goodbye"
The line went dead. I tightened my fist and looked at the call summary. Six minutes, thirty-five seconds.

I didn't know where I could text him to meet me at. I was new to Port Harcourt and I hadn't been anywhere other than the club since I came. The lady angrily informed me that another person wanted to use the phone, so I hurriedly typed in 'Beside the club' and sent to him. When I saw 'sent', I deleted the message at her outbox and walked to the lady who was red with anger.

"I'm sorry please" I apologized leerily. She shot me a long deadpan look and gave a long hiss.

"Ahah, sister e don do na, which one con be hiss?" I wheezed. "Pay your money please"
"How much?" I asked, feeling like a boss that had all the money in this world.

"One fifty" "Osanobua! Iyele o" I clamored, putting my hands on my head in shock. A popular gesture Benin girls were used to.
I looked at the fifty naira in my hand and squeezed it.

What must I do? The lady was so much angry and pet talking or joking at the moment wouldn't do.

"Thanks Jessica" I turned to Jess who had just saved me by giving me one hundred naira to add to the fifty naira with me. I paid the lady and clicked my tongue in a loud manner. If not for Jessica who just rescued me, one could tell the lady was ready to devour me.

As I walked away from her big MTN umbrella, I heard her complain of how I would bring her badluck for the rest of the day since I was her first customer and I turned out to be a bad one. I laughed and looked back, made a tongue-out and laughed again, like a child who had just successfully played tricks on an old person.

"It's not funny" Jessica sternly said. She was dressed in a old haggish shirt and striped skirt. Her hair was packed up into a bun with a big bond, making her face look rounder but more beautiful.

I chuckled and tapped her lightly.

"Sorry na" "By the way, who did you call?" She asked as we approached the canteen.
"Errm.. ahmm.. who did I what?" I repeated, articulating poorly.

"You heard me Victoria. Who did you call?" I knew at that point I just had to tell her everything. When I gave her one thousand naira to complete her cash, she had asked me where I got the money from but I told her I would tell her much later. Besides, If I was going to sneak out of the canteen without any of the girls knowing, she would be the one to help me and cover up for me.

I moved closer to her and told her everything.
She sighed and put her hands on her hips in an akimbo style.

"Victoria, are you sure what you are about doing is safe enough? This man obviously would arrest you and he didn't say anything that would make you think he won't call the cops on you' she admonished.

"I have to do what is right whether he calls the cops or not. But I just hope we see again. Please cover up for me. I will be back soon" I said, squeezed her hand and turned my back to leave.

"Wait! I don't have money for transport' I winced. I hated begging people for money but at this point, I had no choice. Jessica gave me three hundred naira and reminded me of the route to the club. I smiled and gave her a big hug. I thanked her immensely for everything she had done for me, just incase I wouldn't return.

Re: Victoria's Secret by romanticnovels: 6:55am On May 19, 2017
I alighted from the cab and paid the cab man. I walked to the club and stood in front of it. I rested my back on the wall and waited, carefully shifting my weight from one leg to the other.

When I was getting tired of waiting, I started strolling down the road to see if something or someplace would catch my attention.
Luckily for me, a boutique was opened. I smiled as I walked in only to be blocked by two tall model physiqued ladies of about my age.

"We don't need a salesgirl now. You can take your leave" They chorused as if they had planned it as they pushed me out of the boutique. I yanked off their hands angrily and gaited briskly into the big shop again.

Facing the two tall girls who were almost 6 feet 1. I crossed my hands on my chest and shot back at them.

"Just because I am not dressed the caliber of the people you attend to doesn't justify your actions. You have no right to indirectly call me a maid!" They were taken aback with my outburst as they kept looking at each other. The taller one trailed her eyes from my unkempt hair to my tattered clothes and rubber sandals, making me look like nothing but a heap of dirt.

I clicked my tongue and walked into the boutique, I didn't want to buy anything. I had wanted to window-shop before something caught my interest. And that thing, I was determined to see and feel. Not only the rich have the access to good things of life. Even if people like me couldn't own these things, at least we sure had a right to look at them and fantasize in our lala lands, not so?

I walked to the section of jeweleries and placed my fingers on the set I had seen. I ran my fingers progressively along the beautiful gold necklace and cooed in awe. There was a ring by its side with pieces of earrings. My eyes scanned the set and I wished with all of my heart I could own it. If wishes were horses they say, beggars would ride.

I looked at the price and was surprised to see it ranged into six figures. It was worth it and I also saw that it was a special order from princess jewels in Abuja. I held the ring in my mind and smiled. I pictured it in between the fingers of my dream man on his knees and me stretching forth my ring finger to accept it.
Re: Victoria's Secret by romanticnovels: 6:57am On May 19, 2017
The ring had diamonds wrapped all around it and the center was a huge square diamond. It certainly was a princess ring. I dropped it on the glass set and sighed heavily.

Suddenly, an idea popped into my mind. It was risky, yea but if I played my cards well, I might just go home four hundred thousand naira richer. I adjusted my dress and went ahead to meet a young man who was shopping around the jeweleries section.

"Excuse me Mister. I am short on airtime, Would you mind lending out your phone so I could make a call?" I said in a pretty lady-like tone Sonorous, resonant but sweet. He flashed me a smile and handed me his phone. I brought out the card and punched in Paul Coker's number again.

"Hello. Are you on your way? Seriously, who keeps a lady waiting this long?"

"Are you serious here? Why you using different numbers to call me anyways? I guess that's what thieves do so they wouldn't be tracked"

I felt like I had just been stung by a bee but I swallowed it and feigned a smile.
"I am at Daisy Boutique and Jewels just beside the club. I would be waiting for you"

With that, I cut the call and handed it over to the young man, who so much resembled Ramsey Noah.

"Thank you" I curtly said and smiled. "Don't mention my lady. What's the name?" He asked as we walked to another glass containing jewels.

"Vic.., sorry, Vera." I lied and faked a smile. He looked at me with uncertainty in his eyes but later shrugged. He wasn't going to argue with me over my name of course.

"I am Michael. I am actually looking for a set to buy for my mom's 50th birthday"

"Waow. That's so nice" "Do you mind helping me look for a special set she would love? You know, as a lady you would know what she would like"

I smiled and looked at him. He looked rich enough.
I decided to use the tricks I wanted to play on Paul on this Michael. I just prayed with my heart I wouldn't get caught.

I walked over to the set I had seen and appreciated before and pointed at it.
"This would do" he wowed and flashed me a cool smile. I smirked and quickly faked a smile.

"I love it, I'll buy it" he added.

Now, that was the confirmatory statement I had been waiting for.
Re: Victoria's Secret by romanticnovels: 6:59am On May 19, 2017
"I am glad you love it. Let me go give the girls at the counter so they could pack it for you" I offered and gave a bright wide convincing smile, making sure the deep dimple which had powers to sweep a man off his feet showed.

As expected, he couldn't resist it. He returned my smile and said he would be waiting while he checked for some clothes for his mom.

I watched him move to the other end of the boutique where the section for dresses was. I walked up to the counter and placed the set before the ladies who were busy gossiping. I eyed them and cleared my throat so I would be audible. The fear inside me seemed to have taken my voice away.

"Please, have this packaged. The young man over there wants me to get this into his car. He would pay for it when he finishes shopping" I uttered.

"No. We can't.." The tall lady with a caramel brown skin wanted to protest but I cut her off and made sure my voice was authoritative.

"You can't do what? Didn't you see us talking just now? Abeg pack this thing please, time don dey go" I said with my face masked in anger. They looked at each other and shrugged. One got the set from the counter and packed it into a customized and fashioned disposable bag. I smiled as she handed the bag over to me.

'Thanks for shopping with us'

The glass doors displayed and I read inwardly as I walked briskly out of the boutique. I giggled and hastened my steps down the road. Did I shop or shoplift? I smiled, feeling like a champion. I quickly flagged down a cab and hopped inside.

"Abeg, just dey go, dey go" I breathed like someone who was about to have a seizure though I was still thankful I was the only passenger in the cab. The cabman shrugged and pushed his feet against the pedal, accelerating swiftly.

I relaxed in my seat and heaved a deep sigh of relief.

"That was close but it was a job well done" I said silently to myself, basking with joy unspeakable inside me. How do you feel when one morning, you wake up and before you know it, you are four hundred thousand naira richer?
Re: Victoria's Secret by romanticnovels: 7:01am On May 19, 2017
I got back and was surprised to see Jessica and Filomena crying outside with their bags just beside them.I stopped dead in my tracks, not being able to move. My heart started picking up speed as I later got a grip of myself and hastened my steps towards them.

“Wetin happen?” I asked, confused as my eyebrows arched up.

Jessica looked away and kept crying while Filo totally ignored me.I moved to where Jessica was and slouched.

“What is it Jessy?” I asked again. Her eyeballs were red and swollen and she looked miserable. She had been crying for too long. She looked like she was going to pass out anytime soon.

Just when I was about asking again what happened, Heritage brought out another bag and dropped it on the floor. It was Filo’s Ghana must go bag with a parrot art on it.
“Heritage,Wetin happen na” I asked.

She came around and stooped low, then spoke into my ears.

“Madam Osas has sent them away”

I gasped and placed my hands on my mouth. I looked at her with shock and shook my head lightly.

“What did they do?”I seethed.

“Madam caught a phone with Jessica and Ada reported Filo. You know they had a big fight na” Every nerve of me was alert, taking in swiftly the information as Heritage explained.

I felt like I had just been stabbed in the heart. The only person that was so nice to me was about leaving.Filo dusted off her slippers and carried her bag over her shoulders. She glanced at the house again and quietly started walking away.

“Wait!”I screamed and ran to meet her.
I held her tightly and pulled her into a warm embrace.

“Filomena, I know we didn’t have time to know eachother but I know God has plans for you. I don’t know your story or what led you here but know that you have a God that never forsakes. Work hard and start a new life wherever you intend going.

If you can stay out of dirty businesses like this, please do. Remember if life throws you lemons, you make lemonade which is a sweet drink okay?” I said to her and hugged her again.

Tears welled up in her eyes. She thanked me and squeezed my hands.

“I hope we meet again” She spoke with a grimace, wiping away her tears as her hands raked through her hair with a savage force that I was familiar with.
