A witch is someone that consciously or unconsciously transfigure into astral or paranormal world to hold meetings with the elders of the night.

THE ORIGIN OF WITCHES POWER

Ifa was consulted for Odu on the day Odu was making the journey from Heaven to Earth in the company of Ogun and Obarisa.

Odu was the only woman among them.

She asked Olodumare what would happen when we arrive in the world?

Olodumare said the world would be good.

He said everything they will want to accomplish would be done because he will give them the power. It will be good.

When Ogun walked in front Obarisa followed and behind Obarisa came Odu.

She asked Olodumare about the world.

She said Ogun has the power to fight. He has the gun he has the weapons necessary for victory.

She said Obarisa has power, the power of Obarisa makes anything he wants manifest.

She said she is the only woman among them and wanted to know her power.

Olodumare said for all of time you will be called Mother.

He said you were the only one who traveled to Earth and returned to Heaven.

Only the women among them returned.

He said you will up hold the world, Olodumare will give you that power.

He said I will give you the power in the form of a bird.

Olodumare said it is good.

Olodumare asked Odu if she knew how to use the bird in the calabash.

He said you will know how to use it.

Odu received the bird from Olodumare and received the power to use it.

Odu departed as she was leaving Olodumare asked her to return.

He said come back.

He said you Odu when you arrive on earth how are you going to use the power of the bird, the power I have given you?

She said those who do not listen to the will of Olodumare she will fight with them.

She said those who would ask for wealth she would give it to them.

She said those who wanted children she would give them children.

She said if someone receives wealth and become impertinent she will take it away.

She said if someone gives birth to a child and they become impertinent she will take it away.

She said anything she did for a person if they became impertinent she would take it away.

Olodumare said this is good but you must use this power with calm and for the good.

If you use it for bad things and cause violence, I will reclaim this power.

All the men who follow you, I have made you their mother, anything they wish to do they must speak to you first.

Note: It is from this very ancient time that Olodumare has given the power to woman because it was she who received the power of Odu. He gave women the power of the word.

WHY WITCHES HATE HUMANS

Iyami Osoronga "Goddess of Witches" had only one child while her sister "Ogbori" a human being had ten children.

One day, her sister "Ogbori" was going to the only market available at that time and she instructed "Iyami Osoronga" her sister to take good care of her children before she returns back from the market.

Iyami Osoronga took good care of her sister ten children and nothing bad happened to her sister ten children.

It was now the turn of Iyami Osoronga to go to the market which she did and she instructed "Ogbori" her sister to take good care of her only child.

At her absence, Ogbori ten children were hungry and they wanted to eat bird meat. They told "Ogbori" their mom that they wanted to eat bird meat.

So Ogbori went to the bush to hunt for bird. Quickly, the ten children of Ogbori killed Iyami Osoronga only child, roasted his meat and ate him.

As Ogbori children were killing Iyami Osoronga only child "son", Iyami Osoronga supernatural powers gave her a sign that something was wrong with her only child at home.

She abandoned what she was buying at the market and went home immediately. Only to see her only child "son" been eaten by Ogbori children.

She cried bitterly, she became extremely angry, she packed all her belongings and headed to the forest to meet with her brother "The Great Iroko Tree".

When the Great Iroko Tree heard his sister crying bitterly, he invited her in and asked her what was the matter? She narrated her bitter story and Iroko calmed her and told her that from that day onward they are going to feed on the children of Ogbori.

That was how witches had been feeding on humans till this very day.

WITCH INITIATION

Witchcraft power is generally attributed to older women but young women or even girls can sometimes be involved.

Witchcraft power is a kind of immaterial substance which may be kept in a calabash hidden in a hole in the wall of a witch's house or in a hollow tree.

The power itself may be lodged in the roots of a tree or even in a young child (age 1 to 8 years).

In the latter case the witchcraft power will not harm the child but on the contrary will protect the child from other witches as the child is serving one of them as a refuge.

The red tailfeather of the parrot is used as a sign of witchcraft power and may be placed in the calabash or in the tree containing witchcraft power.

I have seen women vomit witchcraft out. It was like a stone or a hard ball of something. They were not killed after that.

The spirit of witches after death becomes a restless and disconsolate ghost who wanders about the world in a distraught state.

The power is usually passed from mother to daughter but it may also be bestowed as a gift or may be purchased.

When passed from one person to the other it is often given mixed with certain foods.

It is sometimes held that a woman can not die possessing witchcraft power but must pass it on to someone before her death; in fact, she will not be able to die unless she does so.

Witchcraft power is like a breeze, you can't see it but it has effect. A woman can't die possessing it-when she dies, she vomits out the invisible witchcraft and it passes to her daughter.

A person can buy witchcraft power or may, as well, inherit it from another person.

This mostly depends on the interest or love the witchcraft woman has in the person that is going to possess it.

But it is necessary and matter of must, to give this witchcraft power to somebody before she should die.

In this case, if she could not get anybody either to buy it or to give it out as a gift to her friend outside or to have a daughter she loved that can inherit it, she has to take it to an Iroko tree that is very young.

This will become a spirit in the tree. Other witches will be coming to this tree to have their meetings. It is such trees that we native doctors carry our sacrifices to in case we have a patient that is seriously sick.

Witchcraft bought with money is not given directly, it can be given through foods such as baked beans (Akara), Kola, Porridge, red Yam and many other native foods.

When this is taken, the power will start to grow, until when the person will start to fly at night.
