ok ma'am. but would be happy if you can help me prepare for next fall. I need mentorship because am a newbie, am not lazy though, have been trying reading previous parts so as to arm myself with necessary information. but I believe having someone that has crossed the ocean mentoring me would make the whole process easy for me. thanks, look forward to positive response

Time is a luxury i dont have so catching my even by pm is hard because i rarely check it. You are in good hands here. This thread is rich with all the info you need together with Google.... also i last went to school a while ago so when it comes to admission matter i am very rusty so here is better for up-to-date info

have tried perusing the school site but I could not get where the language requirement is. I will better mail the admission office. thanks brother

That's more like it. There was a school I checked and they required TOEFL, I mailed the school stating we speak English in Nigeria and I was taught in English. They replied that if I was taught in English that TOEFL is waived.

So mail the school and ask..
All the best

sorry for my ignorance, i just joined the thread, though have read am much as I could in the past 2 - 3 days. my question is... is TOEFL or ielts compulsory for the school? for example Nebraska Lincoln does not make it compulsory inasmuch as you were taught in an English speaking country. waiting for ur response

Looks like you have your answer already. Send them an email. TOEFL is waived for lots of schools...although that may not be too helpful if you are applying for a TA position

Well, my great people, its kinda long overdue for my POE and American transcript. Departed the shores of Nigeria on the 13th of August via Royal Air Maroc and it was a nice experience except the long layer overs (10 hrs in Casablanca, 7 hrs at JFK). Nice meal aboard the flight to JFK. Got to JFK around 2am and my POE officer (Asian man) asked me just two questions I can't remember again but no big deal. The flight from JFK to Denver was nice but long too (4 hrs). Got to Denver and took a prebooked shuttle to Fort Collins. Stayed with a nice white family for 3 days before moving to my own place. First week of classes has just flown by and its been great here so far. My 2 cents advice for those who do not want to take the GRE is that the stress of taking the test is really worth it especially for the sake of funding. I wont advise anyone to come here without properly loading up financially even if you get funding.

Stats; GRE: 307, 4.0 AWA, TOEFL: 105, 4.02/5.0 (BSc), 72.3% (MSc), research/work experience (1 year), Agric Microbiology/Plant Science.
I got my admission+funding via an advert on Twitter, the PI was looking for a student to do some research relating to my field and I threw in my CV, and God did the rest. I advise anyone with similar stats to follow Profs on twitter doing a similar research, they do tweet or retweet grad students openings in related labs. My desperation for funding led me to twitter and its another goldmine of info.

Cheers and see you all at the top!!!

Good evening all.Am actually new here(a total novice)

I have a degree already in Education accounts and I want to apply to Morgan state university for a Masters of Social Work (MSW). The school didn't require GRE and TOEFL only asked for my transcript to be evaluated by Wes, 3 recommendation letters and a statement of purpose.

My question: is it necessary I still write GRE and can I also use my dads pension statement which is really high for sponsors account statement?

Please I will appreciate additional information from the gurus in the house concerning the steps to take, school,course and other processes involved.Thanks.

What is the value of this degree to Nigeria? That is one question you may need to answer at your interview.

Good morning Great People...
It's a privilege to be amongst this wealth of information and great minds too.
My question r as follows:
1. I already applied to University of Massachusetts lowel and Florida Atlantic Univeristy without GRE with the help of someone affiliated to both schools. To study renewable energy and biotechnology.My Cgpa is 2.74...wot are my chances of being admitted?
2. I read a lot about GRE and it's benefits of getting schorlaship from schools...should I still write the exam?
I'll appreciate your kind suggestions and even constructive criticism..tnx

My friend is presently at cleveland state university for his masters in social works. Applications process and Admisson requirements were very easy to come by. NO GRE,NO TOEFL, unofficial transcript accepted online scanned copies and other documents like bank statement and one or two letters of recommendation all scanned and accepted online. I hope this help you to have a rethink.

3.06 is sounds more accurate

Source : bigfrancis

Our A = 5, B = 4, C = 3, D= 2, E = 1 and F =0 on the Nigerian scale and those points are used in our cgpa calculation. To get the 4-point US scale, use their grade point system as follows:

A = 4.0
B(equivalent to their B+) = 3.5,
C(equivalent to their B) = 3.0,
D(equivalent to their C+) = 2.5,
E(equivalent to their C) = 2.0,
F = 0 as usual.

Replace our grade points for each grade on your transcript with the US grrade points given above and recalculate your CGPA normally as you already know how to do, you will get your 4-point US equivalent.

Notice that there are no D and E on the US grading scale and all our Ds and Es are converted to higher-point C+ and C of 2.5 and 2.0 respectively, thus adding more points to your total grade points and boosting your final cgpa by a few points. This explains why WES translation is more favorable to Nigerian applicants than other conversion agencies

Waooo.. this is really outstanding, great info. But one more thing, after adding up those numbers.. what do you divide with to get your total CGPA ??

Thanks ..sharp eyes . Post amended

Multiply the new points given above by the course unit as usual (i.e. a 4-unit course you got a b in would now be b+ on the US scale = 3.33*4 = 13.32 grade points, a 3-unit course you made a c in would now be b on the US scale = 3.0 * 3 = 9 grade points, etc.). Then sum up the total grade points for all semesters from first year to final year and divide by the total number of units from first year to final year.

How were you able to make it out of the program with that GPA. I thought when you are unable to secure good grades in your first year you'll be asked to leave the department. What I'll advice is apply for a masters program, this time you'll have to apply to private for-profit university that really do not care about GPA and also apply to a community college that offers Associate Degree in Nursing or any Medical/ Health science of your choice. Once you secure the admission, you can go with the masters I-20 to the embassy. If you succeed, you can switch school when you get to the US to the community college.
