Bringing romance into this is not a stance to justify destiny.

There's nobody destined to be anybody's husband or wife. It all depends on our choices and preferences

Is romance/love not part of life?

as an africanist. destiny is real ori apeere. the destiny. ori ni meja lawo. ori mi gbe mi.(my destiny make a path for me)

This is what odu IFA says. (oracle womb) At the moment of conception, in the domain of Ajala Mopin (Ori), certain irreversible decisions are made.

The are made in two areas: the physical and the spiritual. The physical area with which we are obviously familiar includes gender, sexual orientation, race, color, and the Host of physical senses such as sight, smell, hearing and touch.

All of these will be, in some sense; dependent upon the choices we made inour physical self.

The spiritual side of Ori is also chosen, but it is divided into two areas.

The first, Apari-inu represents character; Ori-Apere represents destiny.

Destiny itself is divided into three areas: Akunleyan, Akunlegba, and Ayanmo. Akunleyan is the request youmake at Ajale's domain- what you would like in specifics during this lifetimes.

The number of years you wish to live, the kinds of success you hope to achieve, the relationships you desire, the wisdom you seek to accumulate. Akunlegba are those things given to you to help you achieve these things. Both Akunleyan and Akunlegba can be modified or enhanced by sacrifice and ritual throughout our lives.Ayanmo is that part of our destiny which cannot be changed: our gender, race, sexuality etc.
The famous Yoruba wisdom: "It is easier to change a man's destiny than his character" any question?

What can ifa initiation do to destiny, I mean ISEFA. Is it also possible that the babalawo & igbodu where the isefa takes place may affect the outcome on the candidate undergoing the initiation

When we work with God and key into his divine plan for us, he makes all things work together for good for those who love him and are called according to his purpose. Psalm 1 says a righteous man is like a tree planted by the river side bringing out his fruit in due season, an unrighteous man is however like a shaft driven around by wind. With God there exists destiny, outside of him, NO!
There exist in God's heart a plan for everyone at birth. This is what we called destiny. Whether we will fulfil those plan is another thing entirely. It depends on how much of God we follow. Devil is always around to ensure the plan is derailed. He uses tricks and people to ensure we never reach God's set destination for us.

The future is certain. What will be will be.

The future of the universe can only be altered from the outside for the same reason a stone cannot turn itself.

Control is an illusion.

Every event in the universe is caused by something. That something is caused by another thing. On and on.

You might argue that the choice you make is the cause of your destiny but the choice you made is also caused by something else... YOU.
YOU are not responsible for who YOU are. In other words, YOU is caused by something else.

Again, control is just an illusion. Humans need to feel they are in control to avoid existential crisis.

It is very hard to accept your future is not in your hands

You need to think deep to grab the concept of causality.

Thanks for your response. It seems i lean more to your school of thought. I mean its only logical to agree we don't have control over the course of life.
...
But then the future be influenced by things we do or don't do?

What is destiny? Who writes it and how can we know it? Don't think I don't agree with what you say, I m just interested in knowing your answers to those questions.

No one can respond to that question accurately except the Creator..
Life is a mystery and the things we don't know are bigger than whatever we know.

But in my opinion I'd say destiny is real and I believe it can be twisted/manipulated/altered by our actions and inactions. I also believe that one can take destiny into her hands. One can achieve anything life can offer.

However, there are certain things that are beyond one's control and that's where "what will be will be" comes to play. Take for instance, if someone is not destined to love you there is nothing anyone can do about it.
I hope my opinion helps.. Hmm
Great response!
It's balanced and i think that's where i'd stay.

Thanks for the response.

No I dont believ in destiny, for that would ve make God a partial creator. For God, to destine Dangote, Bill Gate, Adenuga, Orji Uzo Kalu etc to be who they re today and destine others to be poor is unacceptable to me. There re two laws that governs the universe......the law of CAUSE & EFFECT. Obedience or violation of these two laws determine what you will be.

Hmmn nice poser, but this sort of debate are philosophical debate, you cant just take a position full headed. Both side of the argument are quite right we av seen cases where destiny prevail. Likewise there have been instances where a bad lot is overturned with the aid of hard work and persistence.
Exactly! That's why I'll like to be between yes and no. Lol

The idea that our destiny is in our own hands is quite romantic and appealing. But it is only half the story.

The problem with people is that many of us give ourselves too much credit when something goes in our favour... Oh, I worked hard; that's why I'm successful. What about others who worked even harder, but failed?

Unfortunately, the notion of cause and effect does not fully explain the human condition. Human agency is not as straightforward as it seems.

The sheer fact that you are able to find motivation to work hard, to take action, to be proactive.. is in itself a function of destiny. It is beyond you. Besides, the fact that your action yields the desired results is also a function of destiny, as numerous factors could have conspired to produce a different outcome.

Interesting i must say.
I think it would become a cycle if i said the situation we found ourselves is influenced by the things we do or don't do.
Then it will get to the question of our birth, we didn't influence that BUT then again our birth and circumstances surrounding our childhood is still influenced by the things our parents did or didnt do.

You see the cycle now? What do you think?

I don't believe in destiny, it's an African mentality. Even man plays a major role in determining his future.

When people die untimely death, it's not that it has been destined that the person will be killed by Boko Haram invasion, illness, robbers or the person will die in an auto crash. Human errors, person decisions, carelessness and environment factors determine people's destiny.

However, nobody is destined to be rich or poor. It all depends on how life treats you. The fairness and unfairness of life makes people rich or remain poor

To each his own opinion

You are right to some extent.

However "WHAT WILL BE WILL BE" this is the ultimate fact bro.

This life is like a movie and we all acting the script.
Every decision we make, every actions and inactions that we make which we think is our own doing, which we think is to the best of our wisdom at any moment have all been premeditated by the creator.
Even our subconsciousness and reflexes are all premeditated to fufill the sole aim of the universe existence

We are pawns on the grand scheme of things

And yes our destiny lies in our hands we can change and shape our lives to whatever and whoever we want to be through our actions and decisions. It is all premeditated and that is our destiny it is what will be and will definately be
Hope you understand

Good morning everyone,

Okay so i was discussing with a friend some time back and i told him i was going to do my research on this.
Do you believe what will be will be?
Do you believe in destiny?
Or do you believe the course of the life of man can be altered?

I'll need factual replies for or against not just some personal religious biases.
Destiny is like a flowing river you cannot change the direction it flows but you can decide to float on top or drown below. www.facebook.com/akanbiabdullahi

I think vaxx is being reserved with words since we are online & ifa is very vast. It seems the ifa in the olden days is quite different from the ifa of modern days. Our fore fathers can determine to a large extent circumstances surrounding destiny but now it is mostly trial & errors & even 419 .

Destiny can be diverted, perverted & even buried. The bitterness & envy of polygamous family & the bitterness of working in companies or government establishment where competition for juicy positions are hot. Some deaths are not are not destiny time & some people that are mad are not destined to be mad.

While some of these are mysteries, I believe we are yet to find secret to some of these mysteries. While I was very young, I lived in an environment where there was babalawo, I remember the man spends hours from midnight till morning to appease , worship his ifa. The same also happened in another village. They do these often. They hear (gbo'fa) clearly from Ifa. When people are passing through mysterious circumstances they are made to Ifa divination at Igbodu to unravel the mysteries. I am not sure if it is still happening.

Yeah. True, i agree also that it takes only an external force/influence for the "future" to be altered. Which definitely would be the "force " responsible for creation. What most people would call "mother nature".
We definitely do not know alot of things, i just have some thoughts that i wonder if i share wouldn't people think I've gone insane. Lol
