The Nigerian government needs to start and NYSC type exchange program just for accomplished professionals from abroad. Those who have experience and insight from the west in how institutions and services are set up and run.

NOT SIMPLY CAREER STUDENTS or collectors of certificates, degrees and PhDs

The only option for those who want to impart their expertise should not be that you uproot and move to Nigeria for good and start out on your own. There are so many Nigerians that are part of what makes some services and institutions abroad ACTUALLY WORK. It's beyond merely collecting qualifications.

The people in positions of influence and power in Nigeria often have ZERO actual experience of being in or being part of the reason a system works or even living in a system that works the way it should.
Even on a state by state basis they need to offer the chance for those with actual know-how to work with people at home to build systems that actually work and can be SUSTAINED.

Smh at people feeling themselves just because their wife is white, as if it's supposed to make them 'extra special' or some kind of 'oga' Lol

They should ask themselves honestly. Would they have done the same if their wife was a very dark skinned African woman?

Well..... only they can answer that.

Excellent idea. Or maybe we could just start the initiative ourselves. Kinda like doctors without borders.

Yes exactly! I think we should. It would even get gov funding from our respective countries of birth. I think UK organisations like DFID would fund it at least in part with the majority coming from diasporas abroad so that the money we 'send home's actually bears fruit in a way we would like it to.. If people are brought over for specific deliverables it makes sense. Why should someone have to relocate permanently? People could do from one or three months to five year stints with the option of extension. In partnership with both state and local governments with the view to skill transfer and on the job training with select local people along the way this could really have an impact.

Okay, then please accept my apologies. I have been born and raised around all races and I know there is nothing particularly special about a person purely based on race. One of my sister's has been married to a white man for over 25 years. He's a good man but his race is irrelevant imho.

I'm sorry my brother.

I like very much, it solves that conundrum of wanting to give back without having to uproot ones entire life.

Would be cheaper for companies/industries as well sending staff over here for training when all they get is a snapshot and not true immersion in the work culture here.

Having people from here means they get to reach a wider audience in one fell swoop.

Your idea is brilliant.

I think the option of getting people to come over is a great addition but I actually feel the culture at home needs to be impacted also. I think maybe stages of the programme can take place abroad to understudy particular institutions or systems to really understand the daily workings and also why when we try and emulate the finished product at home it actually CANNOT be sustained long term. I also think we should understudy other African countries that have been able to get certain things right. In their engine rooms (Department of Transport and Highway Agencies)rather than looking at the fruit (a new constructed road) These are partnerships that can be long term and practically beneficial to Nigeria.

For example we can understudy Rwanda for their system of keeping cities clean and reorientation of their citizenry. Even places like Uyo and Calabar we can learn the 'how' of what they have achieved in cleanliness. Not to mention places like Singapore.

Ask what you can do for your country and not vice versa... Why should you always want/need something in return? I can be patriotic just for the simple fact that i am Nigerian and i am loyal to my country and fatherland no matter what. That is a start. Well, per the second part of your question, A WHOLE LOT.... I am a Nigerian and proud.

I know how you feel bro BUT don't do it, PLEASE! I was in the same exact state of mind as you except I hadn't stepped foot onto Nigerian soil for 22years (left for the U.S in 1993 when I was quite young). I felt the itch to go to Nigeria and even though I was advised against doing so, I stubbornly did in 2016 and left Florida .

I arrived MMA and stayed a while in Lagos. Right from the point of entry, the Immigration officers were asking for money. The toilet was atrociously bad with no water but I was too overjoyed to be bothered. At first I was super excited about just being in the country and had lots of fun. I overlooked a lot of the negativity and was open to everyone in general until people started to take advantage of me. After a couple of months the reality kicked in. I fell sick and the supposedly good hospital/ doctor experience was so below par I began to fear for my life.

I eventually went back to the U.S after a few months.

My overall take on Nigeria is that the people are actually good BUT the unpredictable and harsh economic conditions has created a tough environment to survive in. It doesn't matter how much money you have, the simple things we take for granted in the U.S cannot be purchased with money.

BluFlyBoy:
Greetings my fellow Nigerians. I'm facing the prospect of coming back to Nigeria after 8 years in the USA. I finished my post-graduate degree and I'm coming back with a Bsc, MBA and 2 years of work experience in the telecoms industry. I want to know from my people back home, how is the general national feeling, how they enjoy their lifestyle/quality of life and the hard-truths of what I'll be facing coming back as I've been so far removed from the national consciousness because I've been in the USA for almost a decade. I feel passion about my country and people but I need to know what too expect. So my people are you happy with life back home?

No problem bro. It is settled. Well u don’t blame them cos African govts have consistently failed to dignify the black race by giving us decent life. We all have at least life’s basic necessities. Afterall, we do not need so much to live well. My experience living in the scandinavia reveals the truth of a reggae musician ‘There is enough to satisfy every man’s need but never enough to satisfy their greed’.
Bros there is truly enough for every one.
The annoying thing is when d likes of Pidgin2 says that those who are poor are so because they are lazy and unskilled when we all know that even if u re highly skilled and hard working u cud b owed salaries and vecome impoverished as a result of d mindless greed of a few
Poverty strips man of his dignity. So when many in Africa are poor due to useless govts at all levels then a measure of inferiority complex sets in. But I know that we all are the same. The only difference is the environment which can make or mar an individual. Blacks like any other race have demonstrated that given d right environment they can reach their full potentials.

Nigeriandondie, you'd said "companion" priorhuh well, if she is your wife, then i hands off in respect of your marriage and union. Also, Pidgin2 in my last two write ups is a metaphor for a naija woman. I don't know Pidgin2, but what she said resonates with me and i agree with her absolutely. I will also choose her 10 times over you in anything cos she is strong, driven, and most importantly hopeful of what naija holds and represents. That is the future my friend. With people like Pidgin2, Nigerian would've gone places not deserters and runaways like you that will run away and boast about it while putting Country and People down. Yes, i agree that there is no security in Nigeria, the economy and basic amenities is in shambles, i agree absolutely and we all contributed one way or the other to make it so, by the very least keeping quiet and taking BS from our leaders. IBB annulled election and we did not take to the streets and ensure MKO was installed.... GEJ's govt raped us dry and even involved the Churches and so called MOG's and they said its God blessing them...PMB's govt is slow and not delivering on his electoral promises but Kano went all out to welcome him. Even Kogi State Gov that built a mansion for himself, poor wretched people were on hand singing his praises and hailing him. The way things are now, keep boasting about Norway that Norwegians struggled and fought to make what it is while we cannot even unite, i mean just unite, we cannot do not to talk of fighting the good fight. We are divided along all the lines possible, religious, tribal, social status etc. I have no problem in your escape to Norway, live your life, but, do not look down on those in Naija working hard, people like Pidgin2, (who by the way is way out of your class, cos she can at least make something out of nothing by depending on her ability) and not you that (by the way i am a bit like that too but trying to change it) that will wait for Govt to make all the factors available for us before we can cope or live. Now, if any entrepreneur wants to invest 20M in somebody, between you and Pidgin2 who do you think the businessman will invest in?

What form of slavery is worse to work in ur own country and be impoverished by being owed salaries for months even after bail out funds or federal govt intervention. Here, where I live even Asian au pairs are never owed and never maltreated. I ve been working for about 4 years and never for once do I fear that my salary wud be delayed even by a day.
What of Nigerians who after working in their own country are being owed pension and told to come for endless verification exercises whereas some Africans here who are on pension are paid even if they choose to retire back in their country of birth.
Labour conditions is slavish in Nigeria. Why do we ve labour unions going on incessant strikes, teachers, lecturers, doctors and allied health workers etc going on strike if not due to slavish conditions.
