Finally,... Just catching my breath two days after that atrocious display by the CHAN Eagles I felt so ashamed watching the match,... each goal was like spear thrown through my heart.... Omo no be small something...., there is nothing anyone wants to tell me as the reason for that shambolic display and I will accept. Our players couldn't do the simplest thing on the pitch..., they couldn't control the ball, they couldn't pass, the couldn't mark their men one-to-one, they couldn't cover their spaces, they were too stagnant and stiff, they were not flexible and fast enough Osas and idouh ik went AWOL, they were on sabbatical... To think that two monikers here are arguing who was worst between the two shows how terrible they were on the night! The Moroccans were just strolling past all our players at will. They fuccked us on every side  It was more painful that we were taken to the cleaners without a fight No matter the exodus of players overseas every season, is not an excuse for that humiliating display. We are the Brazil of Africa for God's sake!... No matter the exodus of Brazilian players to Europe year in year out, their clubsides still the American champions League 80% of the time, that shows football is tradition to them. Football is tradition to us too, it is played in every nook and cranny of this country for fuccks sake! It is the only sport given top government priority yet we can't present a decent team.. This is unacceptable by all standards I have seen better players than those headless things running around yesterday on the streets of Lagos, Calabar, Ogun, ibadan, Enugu, Aba, Abuja, kano, Jos, Minna, Katsina Ball holding players and playmaker have been a West African thing right from immemorial. But I didn't see any ball holding player all tournament, no midfield maestro, no orchestrator,... No nothing Rabiu Ali could not lead by example, this is a player that have played 3 CHAN tournaments May it never be well with Salisu for parading these bunch of slowpokes as our best 4 Likes 2 Shares |

Ademola Lookman’s positive thinking will take him to the top By Seye Omidiora, Correspondent  The youngster’s moment of brilliance lit up what was a pretty dull game on his Bundesliga debut this weekend to cap off a dream debut Two dates will standout for Ademola Lookman: Sunday, January 17, 2017 and more recently, Saturday, February 3, 2018. Both games, against Manchester City and Borussia Monchengladbach, at Goodison Park and Borussia-Park respectively, saw the wonderkid bring smiles to fans’ faces as they appreciated the outstanding talent right in front of them. The beneficiaries were Everton and RasenBallsport Leipzig , two clubs whose expectations of him - at the time of his debut appearance – were wide apart. For the Toffees, his record-breaking signing from League One outfit Charlton Athletic just over a year ago was accompanied with much hype and fanfare. Then-manager Ronald Koeman reportedly let go of a fee in the region of £11m to make the forward the most expensive player ever signed from the third tier of English football.  The wide player was meant to take his game to the next level under Koeman, but after a year split under the Dutchman, and his successor Sam Allardyce, has been farmed out on loan, with Lookmann opting for Germany over potential Championship destinations. The Anglo-Nigerian’s malaise could be traced back to the end of February last year. Since then, he only played 45 minutes of Premier League football (against Middlesbrough and Sunderland) until the end of the season. This was despite Aiden McGeady, Gerard Deulofeu, Aaron Lennon and Yannick Bolasie all being missing for several reasons ranging from temporary departures, to injury. With Everton’s ambition and significant splurge in the summer, chances in the first-team were always going to be at a premium for ‘Mola’. With games few and far between for the teenage forward (even under new manager Allardyce) the loan decision was made… but not without controversy. Having ruled out a temporary move for Lookman (due to Lennon’s departure to Burnley) days before the winter transfer window shut, a dramatic U-turn ensued and the wideman now finds himself making the huge leap to the Champions League-chasing Bundesliga club.  It’s a move that irked Allardyce, who felt the ‘stubborn’ attacker would have been served better by a move to Championship side Derby County. The manager is well within his rights to think the player would experience a bit of culture shock in the central-western European nation, but on the flip side, the youngster should be given a fair bit of credit for pushing through to take his game to the next level. For one, and with due respect to the second-tier of English football, most players would rather learn in a side striving to make Champions League football than a side seeking promotion to the English top-flight. This is in no way a dig at the Rams, but having experienced football in the lower leagues, it probably wasn’t a difficult decision to opt for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side. He didn’t arrive to much fanfare as he did when he joined the Merseyside club, but notwithstanding, Die Roten Bullen have on their hands a player willing to prove a point after 12 torrid months. Granted, the next four months could prove to be a monumental disaster, but the youngster has more to gain than he has to lose.  Lookman is still something of a diamond in the rough, but the Bundesliga should suit his positive and direct running, and he now has the opportunity to improve his all-round game and sharpen the rough edges. Proof of that was his solo effort against Gladbach this weekend. On receiving the pass from Naby Keita between the lines, his only thought was to run at the defenders and cause havoc. He duly did just that, demonstrating the kind of form that prompted Everton to sign him originally. It came at a time when it seemed like a goalless draw was in the offing as neither side created enough clear-cut chances to even deserve a goal. It evidently meant a whole lot to Hasenhuttl, who raced down the touchline to celebrate with the team before congratulating Lookman at the final whistle. The winger is certainly making a good impression, isn’t he? The fact that the wideman was the first Englishman (since Owen Hargreaves at Bayern Munich in 2005) to score in the German top flight has got to count for something too.  With the England Under-21 international still eligible to play for Nigeria, a sustained run in the side and more importantly, consistency in his performances could feasibly spark a struggle between Gareth Southgate and Gernot Rohr. Playing regularly at club level, and to a greater degree, at a high-profile club, increases his chances of national team football. After recently losing out to the Three Lions for Tammy Abraham, Rohr will definitely want no repeat of that debacle and pull out all the stops in getting the highly-rated wideman to don the green of the Super Eagles. There certainly was a bit of schadenfreude by a couple of critics who saw the humour in the fact that Lookman, not deemed ready to play regularly for the Toffees, scored on the same day his parent club Everton suffered a humiliating 5-1 defeat at Arsenal. The former England manager said he hoped Lookman “proves us all wrong” after claiming the move was a “big challenge” for the youngster, but might he already be regretting the decision to let him go? After that terrific debut performance though, could the youngster be set to invalidate his manager’s appraisal of his ability and development? Five star men from the African Nations Championship The African Nations Championship 2018 is in the books after Morocco defeated Nigeria 4-0 in Sunday's showpiece in Casablanca to win the continental title for home-based players. Several players - many of whom were unheralded heading into the competition - delivered star turns during the tournament, and in this feature, KweséESPN picks out our top five star men from CHAN 2018. Ayoub El Kaabi: The tournament top scorer was surely the outstanding player at the 2018 CHAN, and was duly awarded with both the Golden Shoe and the Golden Boot by CAF. He scored nine goals, comfortably breaking the record for most goals scored in an individual edition of the tournament, and demonstrated both his celebrated poaching ability as well as a more rounded skillset. What's most frightening, is that El Kaabi could have helped himself to many more goals throughout the competition, and he twice hit the woodwork during the Atlas Lions' final victory over Nigeria. Dayo Ojo: After being overlooked for Nigeria's first two starting lineups, Ojo was introduced to the team for their third group game against Equatorial Guinea after an encouraging cameo against Libya. He repaid Salisu Yusuf's faith with an excellent display, giving the Eagles a dynamism that had previously been absent, and effectively linked midfield and attack. Ojo excelled in the box-to-box role, and also struck a sublime goal - Nigeria's second - in the 3-1 victory over the Nzalang Nacional. Saifeldin Malik Bakhit: Just edging out Libya's Saleh Al Taher is Sudanese frontman Bakhit, one of the more complete attackers present in Morocco. His barreling presence and admirable turn of pace made him a handful for defences - able to both battle and hold the ball up or go in behind - and he demonstrated his finishing class with the winner against Zambia. Bakhit also netted the winner in the decisive victory over Guinea at the start of the Jediane Falcons' campaign. Salaheddine Saidi: One of the less heralded members of Morocco's squad, Saidi makes the cut after delivering a series of effective displays in the heart of the hosts' midfield during their run to the title. As well as scoring against Namibia, the tall midfielder was an aerial threat from set pieces - he hit the woodwork on several occasions - and a key presence for Morocco in the heart of the park. At 30, his experience was also critical, and he was a key figure both for his ball winning and intelligent use of possession. Ernest Mbewe: Zambia's campaign may have petered out against Sudan in the quarter final as they failed to make their pretty football count, however, up to that point they'd been one of the competition's more complete sides. As well as a productive blend of experience and youth, Chipolopolo also boasted, in Mbewe, a player capable of shredding a defence and making a decisive impact. He did just that in the opener against Uganda, devastating Isaac Muleme with his searing pace before setting up Lazarus Kambole. 2018 African Nations Championship: KweséESPN Awards Morocco clinched the 2018 African Nations Championship title on Sunday evening - a first for the North African nation - after dispatching Nigeria 4-0 in the conclusion of the three-week tournament for home-based players. The hosts began the tournament as they ended it - with a 4-0 victory in front of their own fans in Casablanca - and largely appeared head and shoulders above the rest of the field. With the tournament in the books, KweséESPN looks back over the 2018 CHAN and reveals his awards for a competition of disparate quality and intriguing subplots. Player of the Tournament: CAF announced that Morocco's Ayoub El Kaabi had won the Player of the Tournament award in the aftermath of Sunday's final, and it's hard to argue with their appraisal. The RS Berkane hitman was the tournament's top scorer - comfortably - but his tally of nine goals also broke the competition's all-time record for goals scored in a single competition. He proved to be much more than a goal poacher with a series of selfless and acrobatic displays, and don't be surprised if he's played his way into Morocco's World Cup squad. Breakout Star of the Tournament: Beyond El Kaabi, acknowledgement must be given to Augustine Kabaso Mulenga of Zambia, who, at 28, earned a move to Orlando Pirates after a series of fine displays for Chipolopolo. Beyond him, credit must be given to another Zambian, Ernest Mbewe, who built on his encouraging displays for Zambia during World Cup qualification with a series of effective displays. Raw pace can hurt teams at all levels, and expect Mbewe, like Kabaso, to earn a move out of Zambia before too long. Injury of the Tournament: Sadly, this one goes to Mbewe as well, after his agonising - but comedic - injury against Sudan. The flying right-sider's effort deflected - at point-blank range - off an opposition defender and straight back into Mbewe's crotch. The winger rode the initial shock, attempting to dribble on a few paces further, before crumbling to the turf with an all-too-familiar distorted expression on his face. He was duly replaced, although Zambia captain Ziyo Tembo assured KweséESPN afterwards that his teammate was on the road to recovery. Ouch. Moment of the Tournament: There wasn't much to match the Namibian delirium when Vetunavi Hambira leaped above the Ivorian defence to head home a 90th-minute winner to down the Elephants in the Group B opener. The goal sealed a first victory for Namibia against their more illustrious foe, and after Panduleni Nekundi repeated the trick against Uganda in their second match, the Brave Warriors advanced to the knockouts as the tournament's greatest overachievers. Disappointment of the Tournament: Uganda - Admittedly, the caveat behind Uganda's underwhelming display at the CHAN was that they only appointed coach Sebastien Desabre at the end of December, but still, this was a poor showing. The Cranes weren't anything close to the sum of their talented parts, with Desabre opting to use his talented array of attackers sparingly, while contending with uncharacteristic lapses in defence. Whether it's FUFA, Desabre or the players who burden the blame, this was an underwhelming showing from a team who had promised so much. The Faithfulness Award: Salisu Yusuf deserves this one for the way he admirably stuck with under-fire Anthony Okpotu despite the striker's struggles to make an impact early on. The Lobi Stars hitman entered the tournament as the NPFL's reigning top scorer having netted 19 last term, but he struggled to get going as the Eagles laboured against Rwanda and Libya. Nonetheless, Yusuf stuck with his man - insisting that Okpotu would come good - and was rewarded with the equaliser against Equatorial Guinea. Even against Angola in the quarter final, when Okpotu missed a hatful, Yusuf refused to remove his star frontman, and it ultimately proved to be a wise show of loyalty, as it was the 23-year-old who stepped up to net a 92nd-minute equaliser to take the tie to extra time. Gamble of the Tournament: After sticking with Okpotu so unswervingly during Nigeria's route to the final, Yusuf then took a major gamble by dropping the hard-working hitman for the showdown against Morocco. Instead, he introduced wideman Moses Eneji, who had struggled for fitness throughout the campaign, in a potential masterstroke that failed to come off. The young Plateau United man's sending off early in the second half compounded the task ahead of Nigeria, and 12 minutes after Okpotu had been introduced, the Eagles were 3-0 down. Match of the Tournament: Amidst many underwhelming contests, Nigeria's 2-1 extra-time victory over Angola stood out. The Super Eagles, unconvincing during the group stage, dominated the contest but fell behind to Va's fortunate goal just before the hour mark. Ikechukwu Ezenwa kept them in the contest during a heroic display as Okpotu missed a series of fine chances to level, but the powerful frontman came good in the second minute of stoppage time to take the tie past the 90 minutes. Buoyed by the goal, the Eagles enjoyed the better of extra time, with substitute Gabriel Okechukwu striking a breathtaking winner in the 109th minute to ensure Yusuf's side reached the final four. andrew444:I thought Etebo was a super regular in Portuguese league before moving to Spanish league but still find it difficult to break into Eagles starting eleven despite Onazi indifferent form in Turkish league. It seems Rohr rate Onazi highly cos if we want to go by club performance Onazi shouldn't have been making eagles starting eleven. Sometimes only coach can tell us why his preference for some players and i will not deceive you player like Mikel ObiMoses,Ndidi,Balogun, Ekong,Onazi,Ighalo,Iheanacho and Alex Iwobi,no matter their form at their club,it would be hard for Rohr to drop them to the bench unless they failed to impress in eagles colour. Etebo just need to work hard to make the team not even Onazi cos Onazi is a trusted boy and has never failed Rohr in eagles colour though not good not to be playing regularly cos it affects. 1 Like |
