An interesting theory that my close Nigerian friend had explained to me was that, when you grow up in a society where you are taught that the man is the sole provider of the family you keep that mentality. Then, times start to change but that mentality is still there. You know that you can be financially independent but you don't want to.
. That's the hypocrisy we are talking about. So they can easily adjust themselves to be called feminists, but found it difficult to change their mentality in respect of finance? So how do we reconcile the two?

equal responsibilities is why most Nigerian women are scared of feminism. as long as that clause is a feminist agenda married naija women will continue to reject feminism because they're lazy.

whenever you ask this question, the so called feminists wannabees on nairaland will immediately stop viewing the thread or they'll skip your question
. Simply a case of they want to eat their cake and still have it,lol

The proper response would be to try and unteach yourself the mentalities that you're taught, when you realize that they are wrong or a bit fishy, but some Nigerian women aren't willing to change because they see a benefit.

Every gender is equal, and I can't stop anybody from aspiring to his or her epitome of achievement just because of his or her gender, but most times women gatt nothing to offer except sex. That's just the truth of life

once naija women can achieve equal responsibilities

domestic abuse
sexual harassment
rape

and other shiits will cease to exist in Nigeria.

no sensible guy can beat his gf or wife when the lady is independent ,when he does the lady would leave but presently naija girls and women are ready to die in that relationship or marriage as long as they are getting something in return.

sexual harrassment

when you're rich, who wanna harass you? except you're using it for blackmail

how many rich ladies have been raped in this country?

Rape builds off of having a general disrespect, and disregard for that person. Also, remember that rape can happen between spouses which is rarely mentioned.

. Thank you very much. So who are they deceiving? The men or themselves. No man will take them serious until they themselves proves to the man or men that they are ready to accept feminism with all the does and donts that are enshrined in it. You can claim to be a driver when you don't know what gear is.

But see, here is where men come to play a part in this cycle. Women are taught this mentality but what is encouraging it, why can't men just stop giving their time to women who can't support themselves? Some men like it when their wife or girlfriend depends on them because it reassures their power. This is what comes with mentality. Men are taught from a young age that they are supposed to be providers and do things for women.

only the erasing of the bride price culture can stop domestic rape. as long as naija men keep paying for bride price, and sponsoring marriage and other shiits, after all those resources wasted the lady will be disrespecting him or refusing to have sex, when the man remembers everything he spent just to have her.. he'd have no option but to use force

Women, specifically in Africa as a whole, are taught to submit from a young age. They must learn to cook, so that their husband can eat, they are taught that their husband is the head of the house and you go with what he says. When times start to change it's difficult to forget what you are taught.

Why is it that in Nigeria, the feminists wants equal opportunities, equal rights but once you mention equal responsibilities, they all avoid it,is there anything they are not telling us? Until any of them clear me on this,I won't take them serious.

Generalization is a little unbecoming of you. I advocate equal responsibility. You are not entitled to a man's money just because you are his woman. If he chooses not to give you a dime, it doesn't make him less a man.

Similarly, you are not entitled to a woman's domestic duties because you are her man. If she chooses to not do some chores because they are inconvenient to her as a career woman and a mother, it doesn't make her less a woman.

I do believe in Joint couples account for MARRIED PEOPLE. That is, if the man earns #20 and the woman #20, they should contribute #10 each and deposit it in the Joint account which is then used for the family upkeep.

Choice.

If you like collecting money from a man, then it is advisable you stick to men that like doling out wads of cash to their women.

If you like a woman that does all the chores, stick to the kind of woman that find s pleasure in making the house a home for her man.

Don't force a man that loves independent women to give you cash. Don't force a career lady into a housewife.

If your wife wants to contribute her widow's mite to the family upkeep, don't insult or mock her. Don't say what will you #20,000 do for me when I earn #2,000,000.

If your husband wants to help in the kitchen, don't insult his cooking approach. Don't castigate his efforts. You might be a perfectionist, but help him feel wanted. Mae him a part of what you do.

PS: Although rare in this part of the world, there are women that have no problem doling out cash to their spouse as he take care of the home while her business kicks off.

Like I've been saying this whole time: Nigerian/African women are taught certain things therefore, even though times may change they still keep those same mentalities.

a woman and a man can be working at the same time..

NB; every independent lady should have at least two kids before she starts working so that she won't have problems. when the kids get to 5years she can start work. contributing shouldn't be 50/50 it's not okay. it should be 60/40. or 65/35.and not lesser than that.

. I agree with you 100%. But as a true feminists, one who really understood what is at stake, why is it that they dont want to change or talk about that aspect the way they are fighting for equal rights? They can as well tell the men, stuff like, look,I can take up my responsibilities while you take urs or simply ,let's share the responsibilities since we are equal. Can someone claim to be a celibate while still sleeping around? If they the Nigerian feminists don't want to change their mentalities in respect of equal responsibilities, then they ve not started.

Bride price is one of those cultural practices that don't really benefit anything. It is not everything that our forefathers did that we must bring with us to the 21st century.

Amara like shuga are both trying to be feminists, but it takes more than dirty talk and a few knowledge of feminism to advocate on an open forum like nairaland.

I can call them sympathizers of the campaign. Nonetheless, they need to tone down the rhetoric and practice what they preach. They need to stop insulting non feminist women and focus on preaching true equality

Feminists is about advocacy, Advocacy involves action.

Talk is cheap.

Ps; I am not a feminist because I don't agree with everything it stands for
