Terrible!

Country where abnormality is becoming norm. In Nigeria of today even a male hospital orderly and CHEW present themselves as doctor. They are called doctor and they don't correct the people.

Pharmacists and Lab. Technologist / Scientists are also called doctors by ignorant populace and they are not corrected either.

Pharmacists now consult in their shops. They see customers and ask them to do lab tests, take blood pressure and prescribe drugs!! Even optometrists pose as ophthalmologists and say they are MD. If you press further they say MD means Managing Director!!!

A lot of stupid pride, inferiority complex and envy of doctors are involved here.

These people want their kids to become doctors. Some of them had wanted to study medicine but couldn't make cut off marks, etc

Patients come to see doctors. When JOHESU members are sick or their loved ones who do they go to see?

Lord have mercy on us. We are in a mess! The Health Sector may end up being privatised. We need a Surgeon-General of the Federation. Also we need a law that effectively ensures no one gets a medication without doctor's prescription. Culprits should be punished.

Terrible!

And what's wrong with pharmacist consulting in their shop for minor ailments, what's wrong with them prescribing for minor ailments? what's wrong with them taking blood pressure. you think all they learn in school is to dispense drugs? is either u are ignorant or sentimental. no apology.

Why is it that Doctors are self centered You derive pleasure in pulling down other professions rather than fight for what concerns you.

Abroad, all health workers work together but here in Nigeria, doctors fight for superiority.

Why do you guys keep beefing Pharmacists? If there are no Pharmacists in hospitals, do you know how many patients you would have killed with your nonsense prescriptions....

A lot of doctors in the hospital don't even know strengths of drugs not to talk of drug-drug interactions, drug-food interactions n they will be raising their shoulders up n down that they are doctors.

God is watching all of you....

yemmy75:

But how many Nigerian nurses / pharmacists / scientists do you personally know that have successfully made that switch? Rather they prefer to drag equality here grin

Events leading to the death of a loved one a few weeks ago made me wonder what is really going on in that country,a situation where a teaching hospital cannot quickly diagonised and treat atrial fibrillation leaves me wondering what the heck are doctors doing in Nigeria, even when you are suggesting the possiblity for them on phone they act like they know it all and dont need your suggestion only to go back to it when it's too late, meanwhile the so called consultants walk around acting like gods wit student doctors,I wonder what they are teaching them since they don't know simple things like the importance of cpr or Aed in such a case thus leading to serious cardiac arrythmia and then heart failure,a case where diagnosis eludes doctors for days thus leading to blood cloth and then stroke says a lot about the horrible state of health service in that country,God forbid a situation where i will be needing medical help in Nigeria, may the almighty always keep me safe any time I am within that enclave cum sh*thole.

You guys should stop this senseless debate.

The average IQ of commenters on this thread is several base points higher than the average Nigerian. Act like it.

There are Consultants in most major health professionals in the UK (Pharmacy, Radiography et cetera). And doctors don't all earn the same salaries. Anesthesiologists earn more than GPs. I don't get this selective importation of UK norms. Like law, medicine in Nigeria is modeled like that in the UK.

You guys complain over everything. You talk about the wage structure abroad, then conveniently ignore the fact that doctors don't run hospitals abroad.

If you want to discuss the merits of a position, do so coherently, as I'm sure you guys are able to do. This cheap nonsense you guys are engaging in is irritating. If you say consultant pharmacists are redundant, then you must explain why, when they certainly have a place in the UK (the UK you guys are falling over yourselves to enter).

If it's by effort, miners would earn more than investment bankers.

-Lord
You are correct. All these argument about JoHESU vs NMA is really embarrassing.

U are so right on point concerning the post , the day I determined to study medicine was when I had a severe asthmatic attack -: status asthmaticus , I knew I was dying and mum and dad were obviously helpless. Thank God for a doctor beside my house that God used that day , he administered some injections and withing minutes ,it was like a rope was taken off my neck .
I promised myself to know the mystery behinds this.
Thank God I'm a doctors today and on training to become a neurosurgeon , but like earlier stated, I might not be able to replicate the same help for a long time as the health sector in Nigeria is so frustrating. is the low pay we should talk about or hostile working environment!?
I'm one of those that are about to fly , I can't be working and jerking like "nothing else dey" and some people in the name of johesu will be sponsoring bills to be at per. it is better one goes to places where things work .
My advice to all my young colleagues out there , let go out to make money and come back years after to establish group private standard practices: our nurses will stay on the ward to give patients quality nursing cares they deserve, we need dispersers and not pharmacist ( the latter should be on the research field finding formulas to solve medical problem and allow pharmacist technicians to to their work), medical laboratory scientist will process samples in the lab because that is what I'm paying u for., ward assist will stay withing his or her limit .
A reasonable person will leave his or her comfort zone when the comfort zone is no more comfortable!
by the time you cross to where things work believe me depression will have the most of you because you'll surely be disappointed. you will get to work with the consultant pharmacists you never want to see in Nigeria. come to think of it can you even pass the USMLE or PLAB exams?

No mind the mumu pple and their ignorance. I am a senior medical officer in federal civil service and I have been in practice for over 10years and it wasn’t until last year that I started earning slightly above 200k so I wonder who deceives people into believing doctors earn such bogus figures immediately they graduate
Chartey:

No registrar collects 400k. Very few Senior Registrars even collect that. It's lies like this your union leaders brainwash you with.
Apart from that, years in service don't determine pay anywhere. A court clerk of 25 years service shouldn't expect to earn the same as a magistrate of 5 years.
An air hostess of 10 years won't expect to earn the same as a fresh pilot.
The gap in salaries is even very close in the hospital setting.

Johesu want the same salary scale with Medical Doctors. It's easy to claim entry point distinguishes them but let's look at exit point. A lab Scientist at 55yrs probably now at the highest grade does nothing but order Juniors around, yet a General Surgeon who has put his life on the line still does rigorous calls and theatre sessions at 58yrs. The stupid, insane and unbelievable new demand means that a lab scientist, Nurse and neurosurgeon at the same grade level should earn the same, despite not having the same responsibility, this is a shame, and the Country will pay for considering these Buffon's and clowns called Johesu. Nowhere in the world is this stupidity condoned. The average hourly work rate of each professional the world over can be browsed, in all cases the doctors' comes top.

My advice for Junior doctors is to run as far as ur legs can take u, this is the best time. Don't look back, doctors are hot cake and don't limit yourself to a shithole country.

Liars! Some of these doctor consultant come to work once or twice a week, direct patients to their private clinics and still collect huge amount of salary from the government . No conscience in them at all.

My friend who was earning peanut as a Doctor in Nigeria, first left to the middle East, he got a job and the starting salary was 1.2million per month which to me was a peanut considering what other doctors are earning, he later wrote some exams, I think it is called Plab or so, as I post this, he got a fantastic offer in England, he is working with a hospital in England and doing very well, when you point out the pitfalls of working in a shithole jungle, they will call you names, if you are a medical doctor and you are still working in Nigeria, Na you sabi sad

And to think that when he gets there, will definitely and respectfully work with all those he calls inferior down here. He will meet and older nurse, lab scientists, pharmacy and greet first because that is what everyone does. The truth of the matter is that no one has respect for each other's profession and this is what is causing collapse in the health sector

Personally I see nothing wrong in Johesu pple becoming consultants. They can get the title but they should forget getting paid the same emoluments as doctors. It is never going to happen. Then again ministerial appointments are political so if they want to be made minister they should join a political party shikena

Many Nigerians get distracted easily so cases have been noted where doctors, nurse, pharmacists, engineers, university administrators, Judges, lawyers, IT experts, Pastors, etc, make elementary mistakes. Sometimes the consequence of those mistakes are fatal.

In my immediate constituency at UPTH, doctors provide care within the limited resource that they have, resource here refers to availability of materials, environment, etc.

In addition to the above, consultants are involved in training medical students in the university and young doctors in residency program in the teaching hospital both in the consulting rooms, ward, theatre and laboratories, consultants also engage in research activities to add to body of knowledge, this is why I laugh when people erroneously say consultants come to work in the hospital twice a week.

It may interest you to note that in some northern states doctors are hired from other countries to come and work.

Those talking about the writeup being crap and sponsored fail to realise the dept of the problem. In January this year Saudi Arabia came to Nigeria and took over 100 Consultants to work in their country.
Imagine 5 of such consultants in each state and the tremendous impart their collective activity and skills would have benefited the Nigerian population. Unfortunately, instead of trying to see that there is a serious problem on ground, people are disregarding the rightup.

May our ears never hear of our death.

I heard more doctors were willing to go and those doctors were consultants!

I have many doctor friends, like more than seven. All brilliant guys! One traveled to the UK for an exam last year. He succeeded. He has relocated to Manchester permanently.

Another studied medicine in Russia but is currently practising in Nigeria. He is fed up and will definitely leave soon, since he has the means to do so. He has been actively encouraging others to leave too, because the environment does not support them to give their best! They are my friends. I will miss them if they all leave, but I know that leaving this shithole would be the best thing for their careers.

Honestly I ask myself this question whenever I visit my private hospital and see the extremely overworked underpaid doctors looking exhausted most of the time. I ask myself that are these doctors aware that all it takes to get them out of this hellhole is to just take a board exam and apply for visa to a first world country where they will get better pay and less workload? What exactly motivaties them to remain in this country? Docs in the house, let's hear from you.

I think it's harder than you think. My guess is that you need to do some degree course in Meds in the US or Canada for them to allow the practice that profession freely OR get a job with it.

I do not think hospitals hire Doctors from Nigeria who doesn't have a degree in Meds in their country.

I can't believe I read through all the six pages!

Just one question for NMA and JOHESU people...
How much do you think the teachers who labored to get you to the level where you could brag about your achievements be paid?

What we see in Nigeria are the symptoms of a failed state. You shouldn't expect any functional sector in a failed state.
It wasn't called a failed or failing state for fun, it is because several segments has failed or is failing.

What do I even know, I'm just an engineer...

Those countries Nigerian doctors run to can't accommodate an infinite number of doctors continuously pouring in from Nigeria. When it gets to saturation point Nigerian doctors will find something doing in Nigeria by force.

This your contribution is both shameful and shameless at the same time. It reeks of sheer jealousy without a single suggestion on the way forward. You don't even want to get better... you only want the better places to have limits so that people seeking a better life will have no choice but to come wallow with you in hopelessness. Kai!

I am deeply surprised that of all the op said and the scenerio he described all your mind could conjure up is that JOHESU is demanding a par pay with doctors. lnstead of looking at how and demanding that your employers make working conditions better for the few health care workers braving the harsh conditions in situ, you are busy claiming superiority and hating. Man, that you put of your neighbour's candle will not make your's shine brighter.
Fact you doctors fail to grasp is that everybody cannot be doctors. Other professions must be before the system can run efficiently. Even the cleaners and sweepers you so loathe, are still useful. Ask for Nigeria to be good for all Nigerians and not for doctors only. I think your attitude lately is embarrassing to the health care system and really abhorrent.

My dear everyone in Nigeria wants to relocate cos of greener pastures, its not exclusive to doctors alone. Its all about the money and comfortability. If that is all the reason you read medicine, pls don't frustrate yourself by staying back. But I bet you some people out there are still reading medicine because they care and want to better the lives of humanity. I mean why do we still have doctors without borders, I'm sure it not because of the money.
Its not all about money, but if your work demands much from you, then the same work should appreciate you enough, with good working conditions ,good pay, etc just like doctors working with 'Doctors without border' enjoy. Meanwhile there are many Doctors working in war zones in Nigeria(Borno,Yobe etc) this they do and also have to fight for salary before they get paid, working conditions not so good. So many frustration on the Job. The professors i mentioned in my post , they have money and investment all over Nigeria but still want to leave because the working condition in Nigeria frustrate them every time, how do you place a teaching Hospital where a professor of Haematology was slapped out of the lab all in the name of professional rivalry. What about Doctors without Job? Many things are wrong with Nigeria Health sector asides money
