Well, you have legitimate concerns. If someone has some money, I always recommend visiting there first to see what opportunities are available.

Still on Finland...The way these people stare at black people like us ehnn, na wa...I recently went to buy things from the supermarket here and a group of teenagers just called me "Mustamies hei" meaning black man how are you, I replied in Finnish "white kids I´m fine", they just kept quiet...My Rwandan friend got a job via phone interview, only for them to see him in person and complained that he was black, as a matter of fact, too black for the job lol....May God bless Naija with good leaders that will develop our country, no where like home.

Ignorant white people are everywhere.
I worked in a field role in Canada last year. My job required visiting and maintaining systems in electrical substations in Alberta and Saskatchewan. Electrical substations are most times located outside big cities; hence, i often meet people who haven't seen black people in their lives except on TV. Of course they would stare, and kids would sometimes ask funny questions. The bold ones would come to you to ask questions and try to interact/discuss with you based on their known stereotypes of black people.
I was also the first person employed into my position in over 80 years at my work place, so some colleagues are often shocked when they meet me at a jobsite.

I have consulted an agent to help me on my travel plan to united state of America, the day of my interview, I went like every other intending migrants to the embassy in Lagos, that was the day buhari came to visit Lagos,to my surprise, the embassy was luck down,a mail was later sent to my agent email address to rescheduled but, surprising to me,he didn't do it in time, then, the embassy canceled our visa application and ask us to pay another visa fees, considering all this make me agreed with the agent on his suggestion of Uae visa, after so many rigorous, time, money, prayer and effort, I finally travel down to the city of Dubai, life here is to difficult especially if you don't have enough money with you like 500k and above, agent will milk you, landlord or landlady will milk you and people are always ready to take advantage of you anytime and the weather is nothing but killer, most especially if you don't have a good job here,Will be going back to my father's land very soon since I don't choose to be illegal immigrants.

This thread really makes me sad to the point I feel my eyes watering. Anyone trying to defend Nigeria by saying ‘it isn’t so bad’ is only lying to themself, a country where you can’t boast of complete 5 hours power supply in a day, what am I even saying? Some placed haven’t seen power in months, a country where people die for lack of police report for proper medical attention, a country where it’s leaders travel to other countries for medical care, a country where you have no emergency response unit for whatever, a country where you get laughed at for being duped or stolen from, heck! You get blamed and called a mugu for being a victim of a corrupt system, I feel very sad honestly especially today, and someone will telll me happy independence? May that independence kee you there, nonsense!

Life may be unfair but it is wrong to say that in this context. You don't know his story and how he paid his dues to get to where he is now. I can bet what you are going through now is child's play compared to what some of us faced in school....you would see me today and say life is unfair? Heck, I paid my dues!!!!

Just curious , why do want to go back to Nigeria? especially since a lot of Nigerians are running to Canada.

Sir please help a student raise his school fees in a federal university in Nigeria.
It is about #52,00 for the session

I know God has richly blessed You,please extend the blessings to my side that he may remove the shower nozzle and the blessings will turn to heavy downpour on you embarassed

Hustling in Nigeria is very frustrating and depressing when you look at daily turnovers. School is not mandatory shah but it is a matter of one's passion.

Your still in school, everyone has to pay they’re dues , no matter where you are. If you read that’s guys post , he has several years of experience and applied himself. Do not compare yourself, your still in school and he is a working man. Everyone journey to success is different.

Living in New York.......visiting and living are like night and day. If you can afford to live here.....fine to a certain
extent. ...depends on your network of friends. The earlier one came...the wider the network...the bigger the base of friends ..and for that...if you attended school would make a big difference. Support is soooo important. In all the hustle and bustle.....places of entertainment. ...etc....loneliness is huge over here. No matter how bad Nigeria is..... shithole country or whatever.... loneliness and homesickness will always, always have us returning to the land where we spent our early years....the same reasons why sooo many will curse Nigeria..but can't stay away from what's going on...socializing with others...the reasons why they have become Nairaland addicts. Yes..outside is organized...but it is like being in the military...your life is regulated unlike in Nigeria....you look out the window..see two dark clouds ..and decide you're not going to work because it may...may rain!..smoke anywhere..pee anywhere...start a business anywhere... sell whatever you want anywhere...that freedom ..infact. that right you no longer have as is when you enter countries 'that make sense'. Everywhere has its good and bad...to each his own.
Finally....loneliness is what sends most of the more senior folks to their grave....someone over 50 would be like in solitary confinement....especially during the day.

Genuine friendship is not very common in the US (and the western world in general) as it is in Nigeria. One thing I tell a lot of people here is that friendship in America thrives on proximity. You are friends with someone because you see the person daily, you talk, hang out, etc. If either of you relocates, and you no longer see the person, the friendship gradually dissipates. They say, "Time and distance expose weak bonds." Therefore, it becomes clear that your bond with that person was very weak! America for you; you are on your own! This is unlike Nigeria. Do you know that some of my friends from many years back in high school are still frequently in touch with me despite the fact that we are miles apart and have not seen each other since we graduated? In America, friendship does not last that long.
Here in America, people smile a lot. They appear to be very friendly on the surface level, but at a closer scrutiny, they are not. When you first arrive and you find strangers smiling at you and saying hi, you would think people are really friendly. After a while, you will realize that it is not so. In Nigeria, however, people do not smile that way, but they are more friendly. So, yes, you are right that people are really lonely in America.

Good points , plus there are significant cultural differences which can make it harder to form friendships. That’s you will find a lot people going home regularly or living bi - costally, there is nothing like being among your own people.

Sitting in the Park...here comes this little Black girl sprinting across the field towards us....out of breath...excited..says hi to everyone...then asks when we came...and where do we live. Her mother came a few minutes after to say welcome...soooo happy to see more Blacks period....locals, foreigners, didn't matter

.....there is nothing like being among your own people!
Tribalists...take note....habits are hard to drop.

Sir , I meant Nigerians because a general sense of culture. I have nothing against black Americans but there are cultural differences between them and Africans. They will even tell you that. I live in an area that is heavily populated with African Americans and there are differences . Just like there are differences between caribbeans and Africans. Regardless of your acquired passport , your still going to be inquired about your origins.

I see that point with the loneliness

Nigeria indeed is a $hithole country undecided but then my parents are still in Nigeria (they insist they wanna stay) and some of the best friends I made while growing up are still in Nigeria and we still keep in touch.

When you spent the first 15-25 years of your life in Nigeria, despite wanting to disconnect from the country, something keeps keeping us interested about what is going on there, because a part of us is still there, and the people we left behind

it sucks, but that's life.

my own kids may not have such fondness for NIGERIA tho

Talking about living outside of Nigeria... It all depends on what you want 1. If you want to see beautiful places yeah most of them are very beautiful 2. If you want to hustle for money, good education, good health care, and enabling environment yeah most of the places in the world you can get them ; hustle-and make good money as per exchange rate. 3. If you want a place to feel like home no no you can’t get it any where in the world except Nigeria 4. If you want a place to see enchanting faces no no you can’t get it, Nigeria is the only place in the world you see enchanting faces... This is deeper than what it means it only when you relocate you will understand this 5. If you are looking for a place to be welcomed no no you can’t get it only in Nigeria you get welcomed... you will not understand this only when you relocate. 6. Looking for a place to be free...then stay in Nigeria 7. Looking for a family for togetherness and oneness it is only in Nigeria you get to feel and see such... this is something you won’ t know until you get there and you mom or brother tell you that you have to contribute to the house upkeep when they know you don’t have a job. 8. Looking for friends to stand by you then stay in Nigeria... cos over here I laugh in Swahili ki ki ki . 9. Are you looking for help Laughs!!! Then it is only in Nigeria you get free help... Nigeria is where some one you do not really know can give you 10k just to help you. I will stop at 10. Nigeria and her hospitality is unimaginable, not to be compared and can never be seen or get anywhere in the world. It all depends on what you are looking for outside of Nigeria
you are very smart and said it all in your post.

@emboldened; it depends. Are you married to an American citizen born and brought up in America, or to a Nigerian who emigrated like you to America and still has the Nigerian blood in her? If you are married to a woman like you, then your kids, growing up under the care of you both, even if they never visit Nigeria, will most likely still have that fondness when they grow up. I have seen a lot of grown up kids like that here who really wanna go see where their both parents are from, especially when some great news come from there. For example, with the way Nigerian music is going, it will still take over the world. In addition, if Nigeria wins, say the world cup; or if your child majors in something like African Studies, or if in his or her class, they are made to read some amazing Nigerian texts such as Things Fall Apart, or Half of a Yellow Sun, and the country is well spoken of in class. With both parents being full-blooded Nigerians, that identity is most likely still going to occur at some point. Even black Americans struggle with identity a lot here. However, if you are married to a white or full-blooded American, then it may balance out.

Sensible perspective. I hope the dude marries a full blown White so that he can forget his roots, as of now it seems he still likes being Nigerian but doesn't want others to do same, if not why's he here? grin
