Stop saying rubbish. Have you heard in history where the military installed a civilian president?

Is he going to be a military head of state without being a soldier or a civilian president without election? Use your head.

How did shagari/Obasanjo become president?

Nzeogwu claimed they were going to install/hand over to awolowo after some time.

After the murder, Ojukwu asked gowon to arrest ty danjuma to face law but he refused, that's how the war started. Ibos fought for revenge of aguiyi ironsi and fajuyi murder while Yoruba called Ibos fools.

Yes they were FOOLs! For fighting a war they were grossly unprepared for - based on emotions.

We see igbo emotions in their politics today.

And ogundipe would continue to rule up to this day? When ironsi took over, did he keep power to the igbo till today?

Renegade ogundipe abandoned his responsibility and eloped - that's the crux of the matter, nothing else is important here.

Ironsi is another renegade.

What have you been smoking?

Nzeogwu"s coup was aborted by Ironsi so how would the issue of installing Awolowo have featured in the scheme of things?

What's your point? Awolowo is a coup plotter.

On the 29th of July 1966, Major General Aguiyi-Ironsi, the Military Head of state, stopped over in Ibadan as part of a Nationwide tour. He was recieved by Lt Colonel Fajuyi who was Military Governor of the Western Region. Before this visit, Ironsi had been warned several times that Northern elements in the Nigerian Army were planning a counter-Coup to which Ironsi dismissed as 'mere rumour'. After Ironsi and Fajuyi had conducted several meeting and consultations, both men retired to Government House for the night. Early in the morning the next day, a detachment of Soldiers led by Major Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma surrounded Government house Ibadan. On sensing the danger outside, Ironsi hid his son, Thomas Ironsi, in a wardrobe before the Soldiers forced their way into Government House. Ironsi, Fajuyi, Ironsi's ADC Captain Nwankwo and Fajuyi's ADC Lt Bello were all arrested. The four men were taken to a thick forest on the outskirts of Ibadan, off Iwo road. Because Lt Bello was a Northerner, he was released while Nwankwo, Fajuyi and Ironsi were badly beaten. When Fajuyi could no longer stand on his two legs, he was gunned down. It was during the shooting of Fajuyi that Lt Bello created a distraction which helped Captain Nwankwo to escape. Thereafter, Ironsi was also executed.

As part of the Aburi agreement, Ironsi's body was later flown to the East where he was given a state burial in his hometown Umuahia. People openly chanted at Ojukwu to pull the Eastern Region out of Nigeria during the burial proceedings.

Ironsi's ADC, Captain Andrew Nwankwo, escaped from Ibadan back to the East and would later fight on the Biafran side during the war. He later became a Senator representing Ebonyi state.

Lt Bello who helped him escape died in the war

Thomas Ironsi would later become a minister under the regime of Obasunjo.

Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma who killed Ironsi would later become Chief of Army Staff. He retired from the Army in 1979 and went on to become Chairman of Nestle Nigeria. He was appointed Defence minister during the regime of Obasunjo and is today a billionaire Oil mogul.

I dunno where u got ur info from, Aguiyi Ironsi's body was never found till today

I read an interview 2 years ago which was
granted to Punch by one of the children
of Adekunle Fajuyi that Northern/Middle-Belt
soldiers didn't want to kill him but his
killing was unintended and Theophilus
Danjuma apologised/condoled with the family.

The real target was Ironsi, but Fajuyi's
Ekiti strong-head, laced with military loyalty
and discipline led to his death!

Nwankwo saw an opening in the Ibadan
forest and promptly escaped with his
injuries while being aided by his friend - Bello.

They dragged them to the present day Lalupon on the outskirts of Ibadan.Sadly enough the 504 and Landrover defender jeep used to convey them is rotting away at the 2division of the Nigerian army Odogbo in Ibadan instead of the national museum!
It might also interest you that most soldiers do not even know the story of these vehicles in front of the soldiers block there.
What a country! undecided

Those guys are revolutionists, not reactionists, so they had planned everything before embarking on the coup, Awolowo was to be released that day but the captain supposed to go and effect his release, didn't turn up according to Ademoyega's record.

With all the yoruba help to protect ironsi, the good for nothing Igbos or igbos wont still see anything good with YORUBAS. Ontop matter they call us dirty. It was the action of Ironsi and other reactionists like Ojukwu who benefitted from the coup of the revolutionists (Ademoyega, Nzeogwu, Ifeanjuna, Onwuategu, Okafor and co) that made Nigerians term the First coup a tribal coup. Those guys planned everything, in fact they ensured there were no civilian casualties, Most of the politicians and officers killed were those who resisted arrest and later when they had to flee, they had to kill others as most of those Officers arrested are highly skilled and could take advantage of the situation.
The coup was largely celebrated as at then cos the country especially the western region was in tension. It was the tribalism exhibited by Ironsi that made people start reading tribalism in the coup.

To show they had a different outlook to Ojukwu, despite serving under the biafran army which granted them pardon, Nzeogwu was not given a command, Ifeanjuna was killed by Ojukwu, Ademoyega was released but wasn't supported in his bid to capture the mid western region and proceed to the western region, Ojukwu was only interested in the Eastern region, He was subsequently returned to prison after less than 2 months by Ojukwu.

Please you all should correct the wrong impression.
prime minister and all the regional premiers as well as other top government people including chief of defense Ironsi, were to be arrested. Those killed(Sardauna and Akintola resisted arrest by fighting back, Others like okoti eboh, Tafawa were killed after Ironsi had regained the command of troops by ).

How did Ironsi exhibit tribalism?

Ojukwu claimed that Nzeogwu and ifeajuna were making contacts with the Nigerian government. He claimed they planned to execute a coup in the Biafran territory, kill him and surrender to the Nigerian government.

I like the fact u used the word claimed.
Nzeogwu died on one of his raids on the Federal troops when Ojukwu didn't give such a man a troop to lead.
It was Ifeanjuwa and Brigadier Banjo that were killed by Ojukwu on allegations of those claims.

Even if the allegations were true, was it not better Ojukwu was killed and they hand over to the federal troops rather than the thousands of lives wasted before Ojukwu fled and hand over.

It only shows who amongst them was tribal and who was a more tactical soldier.

Funnily enough, the coup was actually meant to favor awolowo. Either ways, awolowo was going to benefit from the coup.

If the coup had came through, awolowo would be prime minister or president. The coup failed, awolowo became federal minister of finance.

You don't do it. Ironsi was knaive not to have seen what was coming. The fact that Danjuma got away with murdering the head of state and went on to prosper with his blood-soaked hands is a part of our tragedy as a nation.

Yes. It is true that Ironsi negotiated to halt Nzeogwu's march to Lagos. That's why he could not execute them. But you underestimate Nzeogwu. He had total control of the North. That guy is super, do your research.

You seriously believe Nzeogwu and co could have thrived in the north after killing the Sardauna who was considered a god by northern folk? No, they won't. If that was Ironsi's thinking, he erred. And sold out the country the way our leaders are doing today by releasing Boko Haram commanders and paying the terrorists millions of dollars. What you do is declare Nzeogwu and co wanted and send the troops after them like it was done with Dimka. They were in the north, but that did not mean that soldiers stationed in the north were with them.

Bro, you don't know Kaduna Nzeogwu. He was also a northerner technically. Thats why he was buried in the north despite killing 'Sardauna'. He was in total control of the north and Ojukwu was in Kano, they would have fought Ironsi to standstill.

Seems they both had promination or Bello was in the know of the counter coup and hinted Nwankwo.
I learnt there was an argument between both of them as to which side will stage another coup and they resolved that whoever is on "the winning side" will protect another. That's why Bello protected Nwankwo. (From The Nigeria Revolution and Biafra War by Alexander Madiebo)
