It's possible they owned it until it expired and dropped, and they're yet to be aware of it. And now, you have picked and registered it.

Ist of all, they might own the name, and allowed it to expire or was not aware it was expiring.

Just tell them you now own the domain, and if they would love to own it? Tell them your price and bro make it cheap and enticing.

I own many domains that are owned by people whom the name is still showing on there Facebook page.
