EPISODE 12
(CHAPTER EIGHT)

YEMI DASHED AGAINST THE swing doors of the hospital and they flung open at once. His tie and the tail of his jacket flew behind him like sails, and his feet made thudding sounds as he ran into the lobby. The sounds could only be matched by the sound of his heart throbbing against his ribs. Yinka came right behind him. The rush of the cold air swept past their faces. It was tainted with a distinct hospital smell. It was that smell that made them hate visiting the hospitals. He“I’m sorry,” Yemi called out to a male nurse he crashed into. Yemi couldn’t even slow down to help the nurse pick up the files he knocked off.

Yinka jumped over the files. “Sorrrrry!” he too yelled.

“It’s alright,” the nurse yelled back.

Any other person would have cursed but not the nurse. He worked here and he was used to such reactions. Yemi had received a call that his wife and her best friend had been involved in an auto crash and had been rushed to the hospital. They had described the accident as ghastly. So, such a reaction was understandable.

Moments later, both of them were standing by the ladies as they laid in the hospital beds. Their eyes were shut and their heads were wrapped in bandages. Drips were inserted into the vein on their wrists. The only sign of live Yemi and Yinka could see was the up and down movements of their bellies. Both men were quiet, each one talking in his head. Their eyes were an open window to the thoughts going on in their heads. They spoke of suppressed fear and so many unanswered questions.

A young nurse came in. “Excuse me, Mr Williams, the doctor needs your attention in his office.”

“Okay.” He turned to Yinka, “Aristotle, you want to come along?”

“No, you go. I will stay with the ladies.” Yinka couldn’t take his eyes off Ngozi.

As Yemi stepped out of the door, his eyes met two pairs of eyes. They were the same eyes that had trailed the ladies since the early hours of the morning. They belonged to two smartly dressed men standing alert on each side of the door. They were smartly dressed in black suits that were well fitted to their body frames. Black slim ties stood out against the backdrop of their sparkling white shirts. Their well-polished shoes glinted in the light that brightened the passageway. With dark shades, they looked like clones of the popular Men-in-Black movie characters. Yemi was too impatient to question them. He walked past them and hurried towards the doctor’s office.

A minute later, Yemi was in the Doctor Bello’s office.

“Yemi, please have your seat.” He motioned to the two seats in front of his desk.

Yemi took his seat and watched the doctor’s lips attentively.

“Hope you are doing fine? Your father just called to find out how the ladies were doing.”

Yemi almost screamed, ‘Cut the crap, doc. Just go straight to the point!’ but Doctor Bello was in his sixties and had been the family doctor for ages. Yemi respected him too much to allow his thoughts to translate into words.

But the doctor knew what was going on in his mind so he cut to the chase.

“Well, your wife and friend were rushed in by two men. They said the crash was ghastly and resulted from brake failure ...”

Yemi almost fainted.

“They—” The doctor was interrupted by the ringing intercom on his desk. “Excuse me, Yemi.” He picked up the phone.

The timing was wrong. Yemi almost snatched the phone and smashed it on the ground. Why couldn’t that person wait for the doctor to finish telling him about his wife’s condition? Or better still, why couldn’t Doctor Bello tell the person to call back? Yemi’s right foot tapped the floor uncontrollably. The conversation lasted for less than a minute but it seemed like several hours to Yemi.

“Okay Yemi, like I was saying ...” Doctor Bello continued. Yemi watched his lips. By now, Yemi felt like his heart had crept to his mouth. “Thank God, the airbags were functioning. They did their job. Your wife and friend should be fine, safe for minor injuries. We’ve run some tests already. The results of some are out while we await those of the others. We just have to monitor them for any internal injuries which I doubt anyway.”

Yemi relaxed into the seat. A smile of relief graced his lips. All the doctor said had flown past his ears. The only part that found its way in was ‘The airbags did their job. Your wife and friend should be fine.’

“Thank you, Doctor Bello.” He stood up. “Excuse me, let me go and check my wife again. I’m sure Yinka will be very happy to hear this too.”

“Alright, Yemi.”

Immediately Yemi stepped out of Doctor Bello’s office, the smile on his face suddenly disappeared when he remembered the men in black at the entrance of his wife’s ward. He hurried up.

EPISODE 13
(CHAPTER EIGHT)

By the time he got back there, the men were standing as they were before he left them. Yinka knew nothing inside.

They averted Yemi’s scolding eyes.

“You two, meet me in my office later in the day and you better have a good explanation for what happened.”

“Yes, sir!” They straightened up like soldiers.

He dismissed them and entered inside the ward. He was met by Yinka’s expectant eyes. He was now seated on the chair next to Ngozi’s bed. Yinka became relieved when he heard the doctor’s assessment of the situation. Yemi sat close to him. Both men were bent over on their seats with their elbows resting on their laps.

“You love her?” Yemi asked exhaustively. The words, though riddled with exhaustion, startled Yinka.

“Who?”

“Her.” Yemi nodded in Ngozi’s direction.

Yinka sat up and rested on the backrest until the chair tilted backwards and his head touched the wall behind him. He said nothing. He only smiled and shrugged.

Yemi smiled. “Yinkus, the Aristotle, don’t worry. We will discuss this over bottles of Gulder when all of this is over.”

Both friends laughed.

Later in the Day, Yemi’s Office.

Yemi lashed out at the men in black. He was not satisfied with the explanation they gave.

“How could you two tell me that my wife crashed her car right before your very eyes because her brakes failed? Thank God my little baby wasn’t in that car. Only God knows what could have happened to her!”

“Sir,” Cole spoke up. He was the taller of the two.

“Yes? Go on. I’m listening.”

“After we rushed them to the hospital, we went back to the crash scene and we discovered that the brakes were tampered with. It wasn’t a mechanical failure.”

The discovery only fired up Yemi’s annoyance. “Can you imagine that!” He raised his voice. “Can you hear the rubbish you are spewing out? Someone tampered with the brakes. Why did I employ you in the first place?! Tell me ... why did I employ you?!”

“We ... we ... we ...” Abraham stuttered.

“Cut the crab, hey you!” Yemi rammed his fist into his desk. I enlisted your service to protect my wife. And you are now telling me that someone tampered with her brakes and you didn’t know? So, what were you protecting? And I was told you guys were the best hands at this sort of things. And to think that this happened barely twelve weeks after I enlisted your service, damn!”

“We are sorry, sir. Should we—”

“Cut it! Leave my office now. I need space to think.”

“Yes, sir.” They turned to leave.

“By the way, who’s with my wife and Ngozi at the hospital now that both of you are here?”

“We called the office for relief, sir.”

“Good! Double the security until I figure out what to do. Now go.”

He slouched back in his chair. His head tilted towards the ceiling. He was lost in deep thought. He had enlisted the service of the best and most expensive private security agency in the country after Sharon showed up at his house unexpectedly. Nobody had known about this; not even Yinka. He didn't want to cause unnecessary panic. Their track record spoke for them but how could this have evaded them? He waved his pen to and fro. He should have told Yinka. Now was the time he needed Yinka’s intelligent advice the most.

He picked up his phone to call Yinka but before he could dial the number his second phone started ringing. He looked at the screen, it was an unknown number. He picked the call.

“Hello, Lover Boy,” Sharon’s voice seeped into his ear.

His heart thumped against the cage of his chest violently.

Throughout the conversation, Yemi almost didn’t blink. His office was freezingly cold, yet he felt like his insides had been set ablaze. His hands trembled so much that the pen in his other hand fell off so many times, but he kept on picking it up absentmindedly. By the time the call ended, his head ached so much that he felt that it might have been better if it was cut off. He looked at the paper on his table and noticed it was wet. It was then he realised that his palms had been sweating profusely.
