DAILY STOCK MARKET GUIDE FOR 21 JUNE 2019
The market is at an inflection point for now. Brent crude is back to the USD64 level, which is like our minimum benchmark that will attract the foreign funds to Nigeria equities. We expect the earnings season bulls to start taking position by now..
Amen.

the bull in Lafarge Africa will only favour those that recently bought. The South African business unit that was consolidated with Lafarge Wapco some years back should not have happened at all. That same business unit is being expunged now in 2019 because the French parent coy has achieved their aim of getting the stock cheap.

That said, the estimated beta value of the bank @ well above unity(1) and the industrial average shows that sentiment is still tilted on the side of a healthy patronage(vol).
In contrast though, it does appear that the 'belief system' on the part of investors has been quite weak. This is even more true considering that the coys equity price has stayed solidly below its 50 sma in the short-mid term, while its 200 sma prints even much higher. ...referencing a clear reservation on the part of retail investors and an indifferent/weak romance/belief on the part of FMs, FPIs and DPIs.
With FBNH therefore, caution should be the watch word !!

RabbiDoracle:

Your strategy needs to really change if truly you are what you are o(you know what I'm referring to).

Do value investing. Target good stocks that pay good dividends that has high beta (preferably banks). Buy when people are selling(when Market I depressed). Then sell when there is a bullish market.

You are thinking of loss because you carry your big load dey jump with people with small load. You are like a fat man wanting to do what a thin man does. grin You can't scale a fence when gbege starts na.

So restrategize and keep your load where the size go fit enter. Stop listening to noise of gains from small firms with low beta.

Anyway many people dey on gain in case you didn't know.

Sir,
Please how do you gentlemen estimate the beta of a firm to know if it's is high or low. Am currently reading a book on investment valuation by damodaran which he talks about beta, bit I don't seem to understand it. Please can you help me out. Thanks.

Fantastic question. This is the type of issue we should be discussing in this forum. Simply, beta of a stock is the volatility of a stock in comparison with a base, usually the index for that particular stock or the general index.

A stock that matches the index, ie, goes high as the index goes up is said to have a high beta. In terms of risk and profitability, high beta stocks are better. This if the index is rising up a high better stock will rise, where a stock has beta greater than one then the stock has high beta. Thus for a stock with beta greater than one, there is the probability of the stock rising higher than the index when the index is rising. Equally when the index is falling, the high beta stock may likely fall faster than the index. For example the beta for GTB is currently 1.045, it is not a static figure it can change from time to time.

Please, I am new to the stock market and would like to get suggestions on stocks that are currently underpriced which I can buy and keep for long term appreciation as well as a dividend payment.

I am looking forward to your responses and suggestions.

You are welcome. You can try and read back previous pages to take some learning that will assist you in not paying too much school fees because you must surely pay school fees. If your focus is underpriced stocks and dividend payment. there is no problem, there are many stocks that qualify to be in this category,(I will leave this to my Ogas to select for you). But if you mean long term. You will need to define your long term. 1 year, 2-10 years. or for your Grandchildren to inherit. Welcome once again.
