@sage, Ndipe, Somebody

I laughed and am still laughing when I read your posts. Do you guys actually think nobody pays an undergraduate degree holder 7.5 million naira in Nigeria? No wonder you post all kinds of mistruths here. I will not be drawn into an argument on that, I don't even have the patience for it. I'll only ask you a question: Do you know that oil companies are globalized? Do you know that slaries are comparable across board whther you are in the US, UK or Nigeria? I read a thread where people were quoting all sorts as salaries in the oil industry in Nigeria. Well you don't know until you are there. I'll only say this: Nigeria is not like the UK and US where salaries are absolute. When somebody writes BASIC SALARY of 4 million naira per annum, that represents under 60% of you TOTAL RENUMERATION most of which is untaxed. You have a lot of allowances which make up the rest. Maybe some other time I can explain why this is so.

I understand where you are coming from now. For you to think that somebody with an undergraduate degree is not paid as much in Nigeria, JEEEEZ.

Do you guys know that there are young men making millions monthly in Nigeria? When I say that I don't mean paid jobs. I mean BUSINESS. I don't understand why you will find it difficult to comprehend. Or is it that we relate with different circles of folks back home?

@Somebody, I only used 30,000 pounds as an instance. The truth is, whether 30,000 or 40,000 pounds it all doesn't make much of a difference. It doesn't matter whether you've worked in heaven, nobody in the oil industry in the UK will pay somebody with less than 2 years experience more than 35,000 pounds. Ask people who ACTUALLY work there and don't depend on hearsays.

There's no need going on with this. Believe what you'll believe and I'll believe what I believe (which I know to be true). Posterity will judge.

Meet you guys on some other thread.

theone, I know companies pay undergrads N7.5 million in naija, two of my friends even got better than that last year. If I did not know anything about Nigeria then you can come and start giving me those stories you want idiots to believe. I am very in touch with Nigeria, just even got back from hols so I know what I am talking about. How many graduates would earn N7.5 million. Try going to the jobs section of nairaland and see how many peope would be grateful for a job that pays N50,000 a month.
Re: Is Life Really Better Abroad? by somebody(f): 10:23pm On Jan 10, 2007
theone, I don't rely on hearsays as I work in the oil sector here so don't start quoting salaries that don't make sense.

@seeker, I usually just let things lie but people's posts on this topic seriously annoy me. Many Nigerians are ignorant and fail to open their minds once they believe something(true or untrue). It might be the reason for the state Nigeria is in.

somebody i really like the way you made your point.

The dudes making money in naija have connections, i've said it before nobody is going to tell you the true story of what they are doing, for fear you may hate on them or worse concoct some juju. I really think there are more oppportunites in America, and i would wholeheartedly support anyone who wants to leave naija as long as you are ready to go to school even if it is nursing for 12 months and keep your hands clean. this culture is very unforgiving especially when you're foriegn and black and you have an accent.
Re: Is Life Really Better Abroad? by Tmoni(m): 3:29pm On Jan 18, 2007
you can look at it from divergent angles,
developed countries and nigeria are different,
uk- less stressful life but does not encourage savings or getting above the middle class level

nigeria, stressful(amount depends on location), encourages savings and better class, at least u do not have to pay tv-license, council tax,[17.5%vat on thrash], outrageous tax rate and other incomprehensible extorting avenues.
a friend of mine just went back home to a N6m basic pay chevron job (allowances to folow)

generally comparing it to oil industry here,
at a careers fair, shell was boasting of paying GPB28,000 before tax to fresh graduates,
i prefer going back to nigeria after school,
shakes his head, cant wait for this masters to be over and go back to motherland

Take away the infrastructure - beside that, life is better at home compared to anywhere else.

Life is a bed of risk.

As 9ja abroad you have to be ready to take your position as a second class citizen. If you go with ori-olori (head of person head grin) you'll run for as long as it takes; maybe answer to someone else' name for the rest of your life. Accountants are running cab business abroad, doctors are on shift as night guards, designers are keeping the streets free of trash. Yet some have a pride of place or na place of pride.

If you are abroad by God-design by all means stay there and polish the Nigerian image. If you are there by self-design find your way back home, make peace with your soul.

What about those Nigerians that have U.S. or U.K. masters and doctorate degrees. I know some of them. They live big. So, finding a better place
to live will have to do with what you have done academically or financially for that place. There are also some with masters degree in the U.S. that are not doing well and those with out it that are rich.

So what it comes down to is being smart and having your way of making cash

It is very very possible that somebody who live in Abakaliki, who has never been to Lagos but regularly comment on Victoria Island as if he lives and works in the Island.

@Seun

I would like you to help us arrange a poll for some of us who resides in Nigeria titled " Are you in Abject poverty?"

May be that would help our abroad-based brothers and sisters.
Re: Is Life Really Better Abroad? by Ndipe(m): 9:30am On Mar 06, 2007
@Akolawole, your comment about some people writing about places they probably have never been to was quite funny.

Don't RUN abroad, stay and eat what your fathers planted in the land
U guys should stop kidding me-ok, there is No place in the world that is 100% perfect from others. talking abt social amenities,Nigeria is growing up since 1960 not to compare her to other countries in abroad that gots their independence many years ago.
the birth of a country should be put into consideration, You can't just wakes up oneday and compare a new born baby to his father.
and remember, b4 a country worth living, their great grand father most have passed thru difficult time. . .

The people in abroad are enjoying the sacrifies made by their father, So stay in your country and plant a seed down for your younger generation/children and stop being selfish going to abroad to be a pertaker of what you know. . . , So your children generation wouldn't curse you in the nearest future.
