In the spirit of ethnic bigotry, here's my analysis of what will happen in the next few years. SS Jonathan's campaign took money from the oil companies so we can guarantee that there will be no end to gas flaring anytime soon. There will also be no serious attempt to clean up the pollution there. Also, GEJ's nonexistent anticorruption record will ensure that the next generation of James Iboris will have little to fear. The Niger Delta people don't even have MEND to fight for them anymore. They are, as always, screwed. SE Not much will change here. The PDP will zone all the NASS leadership posts away from there and in exchange they will get 1 or 2 of the juicer ministerial posts. Also, no Igbo man will smell the inside of Aso Rock for the next 30 or so years. GEJ has used their "turn" and will serve 8 years (regardless of what the guy says), then the north for 8 years, then the Yorubas, then the north again, then finally, maybe the Igbos. Corruption at the national level will continue to stagnate the local economy. SW Policically savvy, these guys will have their interests taken care of. Plus the ACN governors will make sure there is at least some development at local level. There will still be no light or jobs though. The North As always, the ruling class will be well taken care of. The ordinary people will continue to suffer. In Summary The biggest winners today will turn out to be the biggest losers as Nigeria's kleptocracy adjusts to the new system. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss. |

I have to say that reading this thread has been very entertaining. Despite what some of you think, most people here seem to be well-informed. Some just seem to allow their strong views about the issue get the best of them. A point needs to be made though. What if I told you that TODAY, the biggest problem Nigeria faces is not power or education or whatever. Its the real risk that we will ALLOW ourselves to become so hopelessly polarized that no one can ever rule us effectively. Believe me, every one of the major candidates has strengths along with scary weaknesses. It is true that the basis for some people's votes are questionable (ethnicity? religion?) but its also true that it is their vote! We also hear all sorts of stories about rigging and under-aged voting. Was the process perfect? Certainly NOT. But has it generally been okay? Come on! you've got to agree that there are really few surprises so far. Anyway, to get BACK on point: WHOEVER wins this elections, lets all get behind him. I promised myself this very early. The truth is, none of them can do it unless he has our true support. Whether we agree with others on whether they rigged or voted "rightly" or whatever or not, lets realize that the true test is not how well or logically we can vote, but how well much we love our country; how united we are ready to be. With so many smart and energetic Nigerians in this house (and elsewhere in the country), it is insulting to believe that the change we want can only happen through one man who (whichever one) comes with baggage. Lets applaud a generally good process but more importantly, buckle up to make this country great. God bless my country! |

ahidjo: There is nothing fraudulent about the elections and the results. If in doubt, take a look at the Result of Lagos State. Lagos State represents Nigeria because you have all tribes well represented there. Despite being a very strong ACN states, they voted for GEJ. That tells you that NIGERIANS want GEJ and the results reflects that desire. |

@ Princek12 I did not his support his not showing up for the presidential debate. I thought his excuse was frivolous. And he honestly lost points for not showing up. His saying he would build an airport in every state is typical politician rhetoric. Just like Buhari said he would create 5 million jobs without laying any concrete plan to achieve such promise. I think despite both being typical Nigerian politician rhetoric, the one Reetardeen threw showed a shallow understanding of economic needs. Yes, we need jobs. No, we do not need airports. A shallow understanding that is magnified by the fact the he is a PhD holder. It surely nullifies his "educational" advantage claim. Especially when we hear him comment on topical issues from the little we have seen so far on TV. Attending a NN24 debate is not the same as embracing new technologies, as aspirants have been debating since the beginning of time, although it appears to be fledgling in Nigeria. The world is changing, and the ability for a president to embrace new technologies speaks volume about his character. Even if he got assistants to answer the questions, it shows a good faith effort on his part to communicate and dialogue with Nigerians, both home and abroad. Presumably, his assistants will give him a report or update him on pressing issues discussed in the comment section of his facebook page. While no one is perfect, I like to give credit for someone making at least a good faith effort. Buhari, on the other hand, is the president of old with his authoritarian mentality, as in he is "too big" or unreachable. I know it is not the same thing as embracing new technology but I don't think Jonathan has himself, it is just a gimmick. How many Nigerian ministries have website? Does even the Nigerian government he runs have a website? I gaddam know they did not about 4 months ago when I was checking. If you look at someone like Tafida, Nigeria's High Commissioner to London, that is someone that has embraced new technologies. Take a look at the website he got designed. Top notch! He is also constantly on youtube (check it out). It is not a case of getting assistants to do any gimmick. Buhari has his own facebook page too. It would be fair to say presumably he got updates. That said, I hope you are aware Warren Buffet has never and does not use a computer or even (I think) mobile phone. Electing an ex-military dictator who ruled in the early 80s is inherently inconsistent with the message of change Buhari purports to bring. Ostracizing the youth is all too common in our culture, and electing the same names--Buhari, Atiku, IBJ, IBB--is incompatible with the notions of a civilized and progressive society that we presumably strive to achieve. For example, his mentality of change probably contributed to Goodluck's embracing the idea of privatization of the PHCN; and if solving the power crisis is the only thing he achieves in his four years, then I think Nigerians made the right choice. Inadequate power has restrained--if not crippled--the advancement of our economy. Although I believe you have a good point about youths being ostracized, I think an ex-military ruler with a heart and conscience is far more important for change in Nigeria than a spectator of corruption and collaborator with crooks. You can easily change the position of the ex-ruler, ESPECIALLY when he has to function under democracy and can't apply his military ways, than you can change the position of a Gorilla who is soiled and dependent on a corrupt network when running a country with a corrupt network. Strong point. But Buhari somehow had all the resources to vigorously campaign in the North. He would have spent those resources making a good faith effort to reach out to the Southerners, as his base in the North was pretty much solidified since day one. Buhari probably forgot that he needed more than the North to win his presidency, and the hefty crowds that appeared at his Northern campaigns probably disillusioned him and gave him an inaccurate picture of his campaign. Either way, Southern voters felt abandoned and ignored. I don't think he had the resources. Where is he going to get it from? The private jets, the motorcades, the man labours, the campaign materials. A man that has not stolen from Nigeria can not afford such. And surely we can't think of much people that have contributed to his campaign. We all know such luxury resources are even more expensive in Nigeria than in the West. GEJ milked national resources without conscience to remain in power. Unfortunately, our people are too highly uneducated/miseducated to notice and they voted for another 4 years of misery. Buhari has no control his State, but Buhari has control over his words and actions. He made no effort to condemn those Northerners for violating the constitutional rights of the Nollywood by preventing them from filming. In addition, Buhari made not efforts at stating how we would promote Nollywood, one of the largest film industries in the world, and Nigeria's entertainment industry, the largest in Africa. That is why Nollywood and entertainers vigorously campaigned for Goodluck. Goodluck even attended Nollywood events and tried to help them by his good faith effort of loaning the industry $200m (even though I disagree with the means as to how he tried to help Nollywood). Either way, it shows Goodluck's good faith efforts at recognizing the importance of Nollywood and our entertainment industry to Nigeria. It is now a source of foreign exchange and has provided numerous jobs to many Nigerians, and is a constant source of pride to Nigeria. Buhari has said nothing about helping Nollywood, probably for fear of enraging his Northern alliance. No, 1. A smart man has to choose his battles in politics. Supporting some creative people that are bound (NO DOUBT) to cross the line in decency like every set of creative people in the world (Rihanna, Lady Gaga) is less important than his political capital he would lose if he supported and they then start showing se.x in their films. Look at the moooorons in Nollywood, they are gradually creeping to indecency just to show they are "progressive", "open-minded" and "liberal". I used to understand love interest and intimacy scenes when Nollywood did not use to show any of the actions that come with it, the body gestures and facial expression was sufficient. So I wonder why now they need to add in the explicitly scenes of sexual actions. I guess they have an insatiable appetite to copy white people and they are more interested in "Se.x sells" than keeping our decent moral codes. Buhari would be daft to throw political capital away BEFORE he gets into power for people that are susceptible to that. No 2. Because you have power in your words and actions does not mean you can effect change in Nigeria when you have no power over the rulers. For example, Wole Soyinka can call out for people to come out in Lagos or Ogun State today and thousands will fall into the streets. That does not mean, Wole Soyinka will succeed in changing the governments actions. No 3. What the Northern government did is what majority of the populace of that state wanted. So even if Buhari shouted (and lost political capital), it was unlikely the people would follow him. |
