So because Jews drink alcohol today, we are now to disobey the word of God? And who told you Jews I've God today?

So because there was no refrigerator back then, it now means they didn't see the need to invent fruit juice? Look, refrigerator was invented because people saw the need to preserve things, fruit juice being one of them. Mind you, if you had read the OP, you would have seen that fruit juice existed in the days of the early Jews as stated in Isaiah 65:8 and also Songs of Solomon 8:2. This is contrary to your Mr Historian knowledge.

alBHAGDADI:

Hello,

There's this wrong believe among Christians that the Bible supports drinking alcohol but only in moderation. They say we can drink alcohol but we shouldn't get drunk. Well, I will be using Bible verses to show that Christians are not to look at alcohol not to talk of drinking it. Also, this thread will debunk common lies told to support drinking alcohol e.g Jesus turning water to wine.

The word wine is mentioned 231 times in the Bible. But the mistake we make today is that we think the wine mentioned is just alcholic wine. Half the time wine is mentioned in the Bible, it is about fruit juice.

In the Greek and Hebrew languages in which the Bible was written in, the word translated as wine was used to refer to alcohol and also fruit juice. So when those who translated the Bible into English did so, they had to look for an English word which could mean alcoholic beverage and fruit juice. That word is wine. You might wonder why the translators didn't make things easy for us by just writing fruit juice when the verse is talking of fruit juice and write alcoholic beverage when it's about alcohol. The thing is, doing such would mean they are injecting their own idea into the Bible.

Now, in modern times, we have this believe that wine means an alcoholic drinks. That's why we think the word wine in the Bible is always referring to alcohol. Let's me show you that wine in the Bible doesn't always mean alcoholic beverage but fruit juice.

As seen above, wine is found in the cluster i.e wine still in the cluster of grapes. This is purely fruit juice and not alcoholic.

However, grapes usually have a white powdery film around it called yeast. It is that yeast that is made use of to make alcoholic wine. They crush the grapes and in the process the yeast mixed with the fruit juice that was inside grape cluster. Next fermentation takes place then the result if alcoholic wine. Most times, wine makers add more yeast to attain the desired alcohol level. So you see, wine moved from normal fruit juice before it became alcoholic wine after yeast was added.

Now, there are two types of wine as explained above: The alcoholic and fruit juice. There's a certain type of wine the Bible said we shouldn't even look at, not to talk of touching our lips with it. Read the passage below.

The verse above is talking about alcoholic wine. It even describes fermentation process. It says we shouldn't even look at that type of wine. Yet some folks say we can drink it in moderation.

It describes the feeling one gets after drinking alcohol. It's a horrible feeling.

Have you ever had alcohol such that after taking it, women whom you would never touch with a ten foot poll suddenly start looking attractive to you? The above verse describes it as the effect of alcohol. It also describes how you start saying all sorts of junks which you would not normal say.

Remember when you lie down after taking alcohol and the whole bed seems like you are swimming, and also you feel like you are floating and your eyes being dizzy. That's the feeling described.

After the whole horrible night and you wake up to hangover, what's the cure drunkards usual prescribe? They say to cure hangover, start drinking again. That's what the above passage described.

Yet, some people say we can drink alcohol in moderation and that it only becomes a sin when we get drunk. Sorry buddy, the Bible says don't even look at it.

The Bible doesn't say we should drink alcohol in moderation. It says we should be sober at all times (1 Thessalonians 5:6 Titus 2:3).

Now let's see the common verses people love to twist to try to say we can drink alcohol

The first is found in the passage where Jesus turned water into wine. They fail to realize that it was fruit juice kind of wine, not the alcoholic or fermented one. Let's examine the passage carefully.

According to some people, it was alcoholic wine Jesus turned water into and gave the people at the wedding to drink. However, a closer look shows that not to be the case.

Pay close attention to verse 10 where the Bible says when men have well drunk. Let's see how the New International Version (NIV) renders that verse.

If it was alcoholic wine Jesus turned water into, then it basically means he wanted to destroy the guests at the wedding. After they have had too much to drink, Jesus decided to give them more. That means if there were cars back then, many would have accidentally on their way home. Remember the passage in Proverbs 23 which talks about the horrible effects alcohol. If we say these people were already drunk on alcohol, then Jesus just helped them double those effect in their life by giving them more. This means they would start to behold strange women and say perverse things. Now, tell me, who would want to listen to Jesus preach the next morning after the "alcoholic wine" he gave them to drink made some of the men to sleep with their housemaid to the anger of their wives? Made them to saw perverse things to their boss? Made them to sleep in the gutter? Yet you say Jesus gave people alcohol to drink.

Jesus didn't give anybody alcohol to drink. Doing so would mean he's a liar. Remember what he said in the passage below.

If it was alcoholic wine Jesus turned water into at the wedding in Cana, then he abolished the law and the prophet which spoke against alcoholic wine in Proverbs 23:31. So clearly it wasn't alcoholic wine he turned water into but fruit juice.

Another passage people love to use for an excuse to drink alcohol is seen below.

Mathew 11:18-19
18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil.
19 The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.

The above passage talks about a false accusations against Jesus who pointed out how they also falsely accused John the Baptist. Yet, some people will say because Jesus was accused of being a drunkard then it means he use to drink alcohol. Was John the Baptist possessed with a devil? No, but he was accused of such. I now wonder why you believe Jesus drank alcohol due to some false accusations. Remember, the accusation is that he was a drunkard. So if you use this verse to justify drinking alcohol, then don't get angry when some tells you that Jesus use to fall into gutter after getting drunk; he use to behold strange women and say perverse things. Can you see how wrong they are with their interpretation of the passage?

Another verse they use is seen below.

They pick the verse out context and say God is telling us that we can buy alcohol and drink it. If you read the previous verses, you will see that the context is about tithing. Those items listed alongside strong drink are to be brought to the temple for sacrifice to God. Some are eating, but it excludes the strong drink because nowhere in the above passage does it say drink the strong drink, same way it doesn't say drink the oil. Now, see what the strong drink is used for.

The strong drink or wine is poured out onto the Lord for a drink offering. It is not to be drank at all. But people have twisted the verse in Deutoronomy 14:26 to mean God is saying we can drink alcohol even when he said in Proverbs 23 that we shouldn't even look at it.

Guys, drinking alcohol is a sin and every Christian should abstain from it. Don't let anybody fool you into think moderation is the key. A little sip sends your good sense of judgment out the window. That's when another glass or bottle won't seem like a bad idea. And note, wine has tripple alcohol content that four bottles of beer. So don't think drinking a glass of wine is sophisticated. You are emore alcoholic than the beer drinker.

You are full of shyt. The first verse you mention mentioned wine. You went ahead ahead to say the wine is fruit juice!!!

What is wine?

Merriam-Websters

1a : the alcoholic fermented juice of fresh grapes used as a beverage
b : wine or a substitute used in Christian communion services
2 : the alcoholic usually fermented juice of a plant product (such as a fruit) used as a beverage
blackberry wine
3 : something that invigorates or intoxicates
4 : a dark red

Wine is Fermented juice. If it is not fermented, it is just juice so do not turn the bible on its head. The people who translated the bible know what stuff they are talking about.

You are decieving yourself and other gullible Christians who are lazy to read and understand the Bible for themselves while waiting for people like you to mislead them with propaganda.

Most of the verses up there, you quoted out of context.

Proverbs 23:
1When you sit down to eat with a ruler,
observe carefully what is before you,
2 and put a knife to your throat
if you are given to appetite.

If you read verse 2 alone, you should have killed yourself by now. Reading verse 2 alone will definitely mean to anyone out of context just like you read verse 31 alone.

To understand what a verse is talking about
, you need to read the entire chapter. What in this case is the context of chapter 23?

The entire chapter is Solomon's advice against overeating, drunkenness etc. It is not a law or a sin to eat food or drink wine. He teaches self control from indulging in excess.

Am sure you have never read Bible commentary.

Here comes the question:

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT ALCOHOLIC CONSUMPTION?

Many religious people believe that God has forbidden any use of alcoholic beverages — that any use of alcohol is wrong and sinful. They claim that the Bible supports this prohibition, just like you claim too. Wine/alcoholic drinks are frequently mentioned in the Bible. If something sinful or beneficial exists about these beverages, then the Bible will show it. What does the Bible really say about wine and alcohol?

WINE IN THE OLD TESTAMENT
One of the first mentions of wine in Scripture is by Melchizedek, priest of the Most High God at Salem (Jerusalem) during the time of Abram, whose name was later changed to Abraham. Melchizedek “brought forth bread and wine” for Abram and his companions (Genesis 14:18). Since the scriptures was born out of the Jewish context, it is better we consider the "sitz im leben" (life setting or cultural context) of the words of the scriptures in relation to the Jewish culture in order to aid better understanding. In this vein, language comes into play. From the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament), the Hebrew word for wine in Genesis 14:18 is "yayin". This word is used over 130 times in the Hebrew Bible to mean "FERMENTED WINE", not grape juice as you may think. This same beverage (yayin or alcoholic wine), when used excessively, causes drunkenness. Genesis 9:21 says that Noah drank too much yayin and became drunk. Lot also became drunk on this beverage (Genesis 19:30-36), and so did Nabal (1 Samuel 25:36).

Nevertheless, God told his people to enjoy yayin at the yearly festivals (Deuteronomy 14:26). In addition to using wine as a beverage, God also commanded the Levitical priests to include in the sacrifices a portion of wine (yayin) as a drink offering (Exodus 29:40). These scriptural passages make it clear that there can be a right and a wrong use of wine.
Naturally fermented wine is between 10 percent and 14 percent alcohol. Higher alcoholic wines are fortified wines. On special occasions, God even allowed use of what is translated as “strong drink.” This term comes from a different Hebrew word — "shekar" — which is used 22 times in the Old Testament, and refers to alcoholic drinks made from dates and other fruit. The Bible says that God gave wine to make men glad (Psalm 104:15). Why have some people turned this blessing of God into a curse? The answer is that many people do not follow God’s instructions. A blessing of wine was prophesied as a heritage to the chosen people in Genesis 27:28: “May God give you heaven’s dew and earth’s richness — an abundance of grain and new wine (tirosh).” The Hebrew word tirosh, meaning “new wine”. People sometimes conclude that this word means grape juice, or fresh-pressed juice of the vine. However, Hosea 4:11 states: “Old wine (yayin) and new wine (tirosh) take away their understanding." Grape-juice do not possess this effect. Put differently, Tirosh is an intoxicating wine if used in excess.

Having journeyed through the Old Testament, let us take a look at the new Testament.

WINE IN THE NEW TESTAMENT
While the Old Testament was written in Hebrew, the New Testament on the other hand was entirely written in Greek. Hence, we shall focus our mind on the Greek language in which the New testament was written. John the Baptist did not drink wine (oinos in the Greek) or any other form of alcohol because it was prophesied that he wouldn’t (Luke 1:15). However, Jesus Christ drank oinos (wine) (cf. Matthew 11:19; Luke 7:34). Jesus did not preach against the use of wine; instead he drank like most other Jews of his day. He drank wine in moderation. In ancient times it was normally diluted with water for drinking, and was one of the principal beverages at that time — as it is today.

According to the Greek Bible, Jesus’ first miracle was to change water into wine (oinos) NOT grape juice. Some people who preach total abstinence claim that this miracle was to turn water into grape juice. LOL… This is because, they tend to interpret the Scriptures based on their "myopic understanding". Can you imagine a Jewish wedding banquet where everyone drank only grape juice?! (which is very difficult to imagine). The ancients did not have refrigeration or any other method of preventing grape juice from fermenting. On this occasion, Christ turned six jars of 20 or 30 gallons each into wine (oinos). This was no small miracle. This wine was of the finest quality — “You have saved the best wine till now” (John 2:10). At wedding feasts, the hosts normally started with the best wine, and they would bring out lesser-quality wines later.
Jesus gave a parable involving the fermenting process of oinos (alcoholic wine) in Matthew 9:17. At that time, instead of having metal or glass bottles to enclose wine, the skins of animals were used. The fermentation of the wine could burst an old skin, but it would not break a new stretchable skin. Another proof that oinos is fermented wine is the fact that the apostle Paul said, “Do not get drunk on wine (oinos)” (Ephesians 5:18). Paul did not mean to avoid getting drunk on grape juice! Paul instructed Timothy, “Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine (oinos) because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses” (1 Timothy 5:23). He said to use only a little wine, not a whole lot. The purpose of this wine was Timothy’s frequent stomach ailments; small amounts of wine can help some stomach problems.

Some of the Corinthian Christians were getting drunk at the Lord’s Supper (1 Corinthians 11:21). They were using fermented wine, following the example that Christ had set for them. Paul did not tell them that they were using the wrong kind of wine. He simply told them to eat and drink at home, and to participate in the Lord’s Supper in a respectful way. In Romans 14:21, Paul says that it is good not to drink wine or eat meat if it offends a weak brother. He is referring to fermented wine; grape juice wouldn’t offend anyone. The implication is that there’s nothing wrong with the wine in itself, except when it is abused.

However, Scripture does not necessarily forbid a Christian from drinking beer, wine, or any other drink containing alcohol, like the beer Pope Benedict XVI (emeritus) drank on his 90th birthday.
Alcohol, consumed in moderation, is neither harmful nor addictive. In fact, some doctors advocate drinking small amounts of red wine for its health benefits, especially for the heart. Consumption of alcohol in moderation is a matter of CHRISTIAN FREEDOM.
If you're weak, then do not consider drinking it. Drunkenness and addiction are sinful; and this is exactly what the Bible condemns.

Above all, I am not proposing that alcohol must be consumed by all; if you maintain that intake of alcohol is bad for you, ok! That is simply your opinion; as pointed out, It is a matter of "Christian Freedom", hence, do not look with disdain on someone who consumes alcohol in moderation or consider him/her a sinner. Besides, not only excessive intake of alcohol is a sin, the bible also condemns gluttony (such as excessive intake of food etc.) Hence, if you consume an excessive amount of soft drinks or other foods, it is also a sin!

Lol. What sort of ignorant Christians are these? You guys don't even study history and know history but you come online and claim you know God.

Jews till date drink alcohol. That's your first clue as to what the Christians in the Bible drank. Not fruit juice. They didn't make fruit juice back in the days because they would have been unable to keep it fresh with the technology available to them.

Immediately fresh grape wine is stored, by the next day it starts fermenting due to a natural process and becomes alcoholic. Ask yourself how they were able to drink wine during the winter? It was the stored fermented grape wine they drank. If not for the fermentation it will spoil.
Beautiful assertion! I was hoping someone will come from this angle. If you study history, even in belshazzar's story during Daniel era, they were drinking alcoholic beverage. David did same
Like the person i quoted opined, u just can't store non- alcoholic juices and expect it not to be fermented the next day. There was no fridge/ nstural preservative.

Now to the op.

Al baghaddi. I like you zeal but i must tell you the truth.
Try and carry out this experiment.
Get corn, millets. Crush it and mix it with water then filter out the crushed millet.
Allow the water to stay for days. You have prepared for your self a local brew.
Alternatively, squeeze pineapple and extract the juice. Keep the juice extract in room temperature for days and you will find out it has become fermented.

The difference is that you used wild micro-organisms in an uncontrolled environment. There are specific yeast for these jobs. They are called Saccharomyce cerevisae and Saccharomyce carlbengesis.( top and bottom fermenters) i hope i got those spelling right. Its been long grin

Now to Jesus turning water to wine which you quoted up there. Jesus actually gave them alcoholic wine. It will surprise you
Now in the custom of the Jews, in most ceremonies, they bring out the best brewed wines. When the guest has become inebriated(drunk) and can no longer tell the difference, then the cheap and badly brewed wines are brought. The guests are already drunk and can't tell the difference and wouldn't mind . its like ur analogy up there about when someone is drunk and begin to see an ugly woman as desirable. Its shocking but thats the truth
Things have changed and christianity has become refined. Drinking alcoholic wine per se is not sin. It is when you are drunk, that's when it becomes an issue because you can't make sound judgment in that state.

I will still advice a christian not to drink

When they want to be foolish, they rush to the Greek word.

The verse you are trying to counter says Well Drunk. Well is an adjective. As used in John 2:10, it means they have drank well enough, not gotten drunk like a drunkard. I can drink water well enough. But does that make me a drinksrd like those on alcohol?

The word drunken doesn't always mean drunk of alcohol. Don't you understand English? I can be drunken from water. It simply means I have drank enough water. Some of the passage you quoted shows that drunken as used is talking about alcohol e.g Acts 2:15 because people don't usually drink alcohol during the day but at night. But don't people drink water at all times? Yes they do, so we see that the verse speaks of alcohol.

But 1 Corinthians 11:21 speaks of fruit juice type of wine. You can be drunk of fruit juice i.e drink too much of it. This doesn't mean you are drunk like alcoholics. Paul was simply warning the Christians against the idea that the Lord's Supper was an avenue to eat and drink too much. He was simply saying, "go to your house if you want to eat and drink till you are filled. The Lord's Supper is not for such". That's why it's just a tiny piece of bread and small cup of wine that gets served at Holy Communion. This is done to prevent people from thinking the Lord's Supper is a feast.

1 Corinthians 11:20-22 King James Version (KJV)
When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord's supper.
For in eating every one taketh before other his own supper: and one is hungry, and another is drunken.
What? have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the church of God, and shame them that have not? what shall I say to you? shall I praise you in this? I praise you not.

I've heard something new today. Someone can be drunk on fruit juice? Do you know the meaning of to be drunk on something?

Drunk
verb
past participle of drink.

adjective
affected by alcohol to the extent of losing control of one's faculties or behaviour.
"he was so drunk he lurched from wall to wall"
synonyms: intoxicated, inebriated, drunken, befuddled, incapable, tipsy, the worse for drink, under the influence.

You talked of English when you don't understand simple English or you're playing dumb to win an argument , there's a difference between "drunk" as a verb and as a noun or adjective. When I say I've drunk fruit juice, it's different from I'm drunk of fruit juice. To be drunk of fruit juice doesn't even make sense.

Drunk as a noun or an adjective means to be intoxicated. You even said you can be drunk on water?
English dey hard you? You can't be drunk on anything that's not intoxicating. Stop murdering English language.

I explained English, you played dumb not to know, I quoted original Greek, you discarded it as false. What else do you want?

1 Timothy 3:8
Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued or given to much wine or greedy for money.

1 Timothy 5: 23

Drink no longer water only, but use a little wine for your stomach's sake and your frequent illnesses.

The above statement highlighted my comment, Christian is so simple but religious leaders make it look complicated, first the bible did not said we should not take alcohol but we should not take it in excess, second the same pastor that said we should not take alcohol indirectly task it through consumption of food. e.g you can't prepared birthday cake without putting alcohol or even bread which most of them use as holy communion. Even Jesus turn water into wine, the bible didn't tell us the types of wine it is but we can get a clear picture of it when Jesus and his disciple dine with Zachary the tax collector ( a sinner) what do you expect a sinner to have for visitor?

The Bold part is where your problem lie, lazy reader. If you had read the entire write-up, you would have seen that the Bible speaks two kinds of wine: Fruit juice and alcoholic beverage.

Paul didn't advice Timothy to take alcohol. It was fruit juice he advised. Telling Timothy to take alcohol is the same as going against the Book of Proverbs 23:31 that says we shouldn't even look at alcoholic wine not to talk of drinking it, regardless of the amount.

Now, go back and read the OP again, Mr personal encounter with God who throws away the word of God just to operate based on his own conscience.
if it was fruit juice that paul was talking about, why did he have to emphasize it as if it was a fibidden thing? If it was juice which according to u was a common thing, don't u think timothy didn't need paul to tell him to drink what he has been drinking already?

Do you know you can be drunk of water?

I don't need to help you with a dictionary. Google is there for you.

guess you can also be intoxicated by water too. You need Google more than I do.
....and whenever you come down from that high mountain you placed yourself, do use your dictionary please.
