Hi,

First, Nigerians need to understand that there is nothing like free education, except you win a full scholarship by some well known international organizations like the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship/Fellowship. Even with those international scholarship, they will advise you to come with money to cater for your 3months ( like $3000-$5000) upkeep before the disbursement of the scholarship money. Even Germany and some Scandinavian countries, you must provide evidence of at least €8000 - €15000 to cater for your subsistence at least for 1year and most often their embassies in Nigeria will want this money paid into an account in those countries before a student visa is granted. Even the US Embassy will need an evidence of a “liquid cash” in the region of 7 - 12 million Naira. Even with that, it is not a guarantee to get an F1 visa.

In the USA, graduate studies are like applying for job. You need good GPA which if your ND & HND are in the Upper Credits, then your Equivalent GPA according to WES Evaluation will look pretty nice. You will need Statement of Purpose, GRE, TOEFL, Recommendation Letters (2 or 3). If you are a STEM Graduate, do yourself a favor by scoring great in the Quant section of the GRE and modest score in the Verbal. TOEFL is good if your seeking a Graduate Teaching Assistantships and applying for some internal and external competitive fellowships.

Be upfront by contacting Professors (2 or 3) who you like to work in their research groups and maintain a professional relationship with them that will endear you to them and find a way to informally seek to work for them and if they agree, even mention their names in your Statement of Purpose and why you would like to work for them. Be upfront as the relationship develops to ask for sponsorship from them (Research or Graduate Assistantships). Talk to the Department about funding available. While you are preparing, develop skills that might be of help and make it possible for the school to grant you Assistantships and waive tuition fees and even pay you monthly stipend until you finish your program. If you studied HND Computer Engineering and you have been practicing real hardware engineering, it might pay you some premiums when you get to school and may start working for your department based on your already developed skills in computer hardware engineering.
Even when the school offers you Assistantships, mind you that you must provide 7-12million Naira for the US Embassy to grant you F1 Student visa. None of these is a guarantee.

So you need to know which country do you want want and prepare for their requirements and documentation.

Will be available to answer you and assist you more.

Good morning guys.....I just came across this thread and I am really interested in furthering my education.

I graduated from Yaba College of Technology in 2012 with:
An OND in Computer engineering (lower credit)
HND in Electrical Electronics Engineering (lower credit)

I would like to know the steps I can take in furthering my education with the above qualifications.
I visited the WES website and tried using their free tool but yabatech is not listed in it.
Info for America, Canada and European countries were free tuition/scholarships are available for foreign students

Thanks in advance

There is, it is called NARIC but it depends on what program you are applying to. Almost every EU nation has a NARIC Organization responsible for Qualification Evaluation.

Please are there Credential Evaluation bodies for European countries too?

This is a great relief for most people applying for WES evaluation with credentials from Nigeria. The WASSCE and NECO hurdle is time consuming and waste of money.

Good day. For someone with both ND and HND, when filling the academic record request form.. Should I collect two forms for both the ND and HND or one single form. I'm confused about that part.
Re: What Is The Hnd Equivalent In Usa by GNwafor(m): 6:09am On Dec 27, 2020
For your ND & HND, you need 2 forms (International Transcript Request Form) as the HND & ND are two separate/different programs and you need to pay for and request for both Transcripts. If your HND & ND were done in the same school, this becomes a lot easier, but if you have done it in 2 different schools, then you must request for and pay for the Transcripts in the 2 different schools. In any case, make sure that both the HND & ND Transcripts get to WES because it is the evaluation of these HND & ND Transcripts (both of them) that gets you the USA Bachelor's Degree Equivalent from the WES Credential Evaluation.

Note that henceforth, you no longer need to send hard copy of your ND or HND Certificate to WES, you will only need to upload a soft copy of your Certificate online when you are making an application for the WES Credential Evaluation, and then request your school to send the HND & ND Transcripts using either the Courier Service or normal postal services (Address is given on the Transcript Request Form). For traceability and tracking, you are best advised to use the courier service.

Hello, I want to attest to the fact that HND = Bsc in the US.
I applied for WES evaluation early this month and my report just came out today. I finished my HND with 2.65 and to my surprise, my GPA after evaluation rose to 3.07.
To my HND friends out there, HND is equivalent to Bsc in US, while OND = Associate Degree.

Hello everyone,
I have been going through this since 2009, asking questions about the equivalence of HND In US, this and that, but unfortunately I couldn't find a reliable answer, till February 2012, and I thought of sharing it cos I believe other are out there like I was before.

First I would like to start by saying. YES!!!! NIGERIAN HND IS EQUIVALENT TO A US BACHELOR DEGREE. Am sure of what am saying because my HND transcripts (that's both my ND & HND) were evaluated as an American bachelors degree.

I would also like to tell you that working or getting admitted into American colleges is based on American qualifications and grades, so to work or get admission into American colleges, first try and get your certificate, diploma, degree or whatever you hold into American equivalence, and you can do that by sending your transcripts to one of the evaluation agencies, WES (world Education Services) http://www.wes.org/ is accepted by almost all American colleges but you can still find out more at http://www.naces.org/members.htm

For more guidelines on how to get to admission into American College with a HND a brother has helped out on his blog, and you can check it out here http://www.farooqkperogi.com/2009/12/hnd-and-american-universities.html and http://www.farooqkperogi.com/2009/03/looking-at-american-education-with_382.html

I would like to share my experience: I graduated with a HND in Electronics Engineering in 2009 from a Nigerian Federal Polytechnic, and sent my transcript to World Education Services WES on October 2011, I paid $202 for the service, the evaluation is supposed to be completed in 7days once all my documents are received, but we all know our 9ja na, considering the fact that the country was in crises it took me 3months to get my transcript to WES, again early JAN 2012 WES sent back another copy to FED POLY, for verification, and at the time our beloved nation is on strike due to subsidy matter and boko haram wahala, till 1st feb 2012, that's when WES got a feed back and my application became complete, on 8th Feb, 2012, my evaluation was complete.

I graduate in Nigeria with 3.14 out of 4.0 CGPA, which is of course our Upper Credit as we call it. But to my surprise from the evaluation my GPA was high to 3.56 out 4.0, that is based on the American System, moreover, in US they use a system of Credit Hours to determine your qualification, and in other to have a US bachelor degree, you must at-least have a minimum of 120 Credit Hours, but from my evaluation I had 135 Credit Hours, which is almost more-than that of the US. And as am typing this I have already applied to one of the top 15 engineering and technology university in the world for my masters program with a HND, and they have assured me that I would get it, after all am having a 3.56 GPA, and a good GRE score (GRE is an exams u sit for before applying for most graduate programs in US, its just like GMAT).
But still there are some few things you should be aware of, just because your transcripts are equivalent to a US degree, doesn't mean you will not take undergraduate courses, yes you will automatically be enrolled to a masters degree, as far as you meet the requirements, but there are some certain courses that you must take which of course are undergraduate courses, and the reason is because those courses are expected by all American graduates and in other to be one, you must go through it, such courses are like those related to the American policies, government, etc. (I haven't reached that stage, am just telling you based on what the school I applied for feed me too).

So to all those who keep asking, what is the equivalence of HND in US, its equivalent to a BACHELOR DEGREE smiley but you really need to make good grades in your HND before you have something of worth, because I don't think there is any American University that would give you masters program with a minimum of 3.0GPA, U might get a provisional admission with a minimum of 2.5GPA (This is based on my reasoning, and what I have been going through, so just look out, cos I might be wrong)

If you need any proof regarding this, or guidelines don't hesitate to tell me or reply me, I promise i would help if I can, cos few years ago, I was once in the same point.

Cheers!
smiley

This is a very interesting question.

First, I will advise you to do the Credential Evaluation with WES.

Second, after the Credential Evaluation is completed, you can get admission to CONTINUE your studies.

But before I go further, what area did you major in your NCE? Again, what area of study do plan to venture into?

Provide answers to these questions, so that I can guide properly.

Good day sir. I've been following this thread from page 1. I noticed from your transcript that you studied chemical engineering.

My question might be off topic but I'll like to know the tuition range and duration of study for the Masters program from the school you studied

I am also a chemical engineering student from polytechnic nekede. Almost done with my HND

Thanks to this guy GNwafor. You are doing a great job demystifying this Information.

I agree with a lot of things you have said from the beginning of this thread up till now. Men!! is over 4 years and you still follow up.

Well am in the process, i know WES is great, i also know that A lot of People has used WES evaluation to get Masters In the US.

One of the schools am applying to in the US specifically requested my Transcripts to be evaluated by either FSCA or WES.(I have ND and HND)

I don't have money and time for WES since i have made progress with my school applications i decided to go for FSCA which is cheaper and easier.

I hope the outcome will be favorable.

My Advice to any one seeking for admission in the US. Ask questions and make your research. Admission Process in the US is real Hard Work but it pays at the end.
