Hello House,

Thank you to all the contributors for the advice and tips.

I learnt a lot from the platform and thought to give my experience at my appointment today.

The VO experience of others helped me to prepare in advance for mine, so here goes:

BTW I applied for a medical visa and my husband a tourist visa, both first time applicants.

VO: Good morning
US: Morning
VO: Why are you visiting the US?
HB: For the birth of our first child
VO: How long do you plan to stay in the US?
HB: 4 weeks and my wife about 11 weeks
VO: What do you do ?
HB: Answers
ME: Answers
VO: What do you earn ?
HB: Answers
ME: Answers
VO: Have you travelled to any other countries?
HB: Yes, UK
ME: UK and Ghana
VO: Do you have any evidence of funds for me?
HB: Yes /Hands over bank statements/
VO: /Looks through statement/ I can see some investments here…
ME: Yes, they are in for 30 days and can be liquidated midway if required /Quickly said that cause the closing balance was 2k but we had a letter indicating it had been placed on a fixed deposit cycle/
VO: What’s the name of the hospital you plan to use?
ME: Answers
VO: Did they tell you how much it’ll cost?
ME: Yes, about 10k for normal delivery and 12k plus for C-section /I look down at hospital breakdown/
VO: Can I see that?
ME: Yes /Hands over hospital breakdown/
VO: /Goes through breakdown /Hands breakdown back/ Did the hospital mention any discounts?
ME: No
VO: Okay, I’m going to grant you a visa at this time, but I need to advise you. I think the cost for the normal delivery, 10k, is low but that’s okay. Sometimes the hospitals offer some discount which they transfer to the US government and which you’re not entitled to so if they offer you a discount, just decline else it may affect your future applications.
US: Noted, Thank you
VO: /Hands us a slip/ Please pay the reciprocity fees at aisle ** and you will be contacted to collect your passport in a few days.

Reciprocity fee was N40,700.00 per person. Please take along the right amount, we had to wait for an hour to pay cause they didn’t have change and we were told you cannot leave your change.

Also my husband’s statements were in his company’s name and the VO didn’t ask any questions in this regard, I had read somewhere company accounts was a no-no, but we had taken the registration documents to show proof of ownership and collected letters from the banks stating he was the sole signatory.

Then again, it may not have been an issue because we were both present at the interview, if I had applied alone and taken his company’s account perhaps there may have been further questions.

Hope this helps someone.

Welldone and congrats.
You were favoured and had a patient VO.
Some dont even ask for any documents before declining someone's application.
Interesting that 10k dollars is too small for VD. It is well oh.
Make I begin submit prayer point for my renewal next yr. undecided

All my U.S visa interview has always been company statement. I don't think they have problem with that

Greetings Everyone,

Please I have a question.

My Sister gave birth to twins in the Us 3 years ago, Vegas precisely and then a friend of hers brought up an issue about her kids social security benefits. So ever since she has been fuming about the idea that my Aunt who housed her while in the Us(a Us citizen) is taking custody of the money or benefits or whatever they give them of which she has no idea of.

So my questions are:
1. Are there any such things as benefits for a mother who gave birth in the Us with Social security number?
2. Can she claim it for them while she is still in Nigeria.
3. Her kids aren't disabled and what are the possible implications of someone claiming it for her with or without her knowledge.

Please gurus, your response will be incredibly appreciated. Una claim anything?

The United States has no public aid programs for US citizens living abroad.

Most US public aid programs are administered by the several states and territories, and are thus payable only to individuals who actually reside in a state or territory. A citizen living abroad is not residing in any US state or territory and is thus not eligible for state-administered assistance.

Are you sister's kids residing in the US? If not then it was no need for your sister to have applied for their social security cards when she had them in the US...and had no plans of staying in the US.

Additionally, make sure you sister is aware that no one should be using her kids social security to get any benefits in the US or also to file for taxes as dependents without her permission.

No they are not. Apparently her kids are with her in Nigeria but she's scared cos there's been speculations that if you collect Social sec benefits when you are not a citizen nd don't pay tax, it could back fire when your kids turn 18 and intend filing for you to come over.

More so, she's furious cos someone is collecting it without her consent.

What are you pretending about now? Is it today that you know you lot "rich" Nigeria-Americans are good at this? You are now busy talking of the children not residing in the US and all. But you peeps, some of you, always act funny once you lay your hands on those Social Security digits of babies born in the US but resident in Nigeria. You know your way round using the digits for such claims even when the US-born kids are not resident in the US.

Some brazenly go for those digits, others call you out of the blues to do a subtle request for it early in the year, and yet Nigerians in Nigeria are the corrupt Nigerians. This topic has come up at different times here. Mothers, protect those digits, better still don't even go for them so as to avoid situations that will make you offend your US host or act "irrational" to stall them, it is what is available that they will disturb you for na. I thank God for my kind of loaded US hosts, they can never condescend low to this, their threshold actually puts them above such desperation of those of you living fake lives. Mtchhheeewww!

Okay, your sister remaining furious without doing anything will not change the situation.

If indeed what you're implying about your sister is indeed true then let your sister call the social services office in whatever State such benefits is being used and report the situation. Simple.

Beautyaddy is right: pls do not allow anyone to use your twins social security numbers for any purpose - not even their father, if he happens to be resident in the US. Nobody apart from yourself is even supposed to know the numbers which should be secret and guarded very jealously on their behalf until they turn 18.

Funny enough, Max they can get per kid is about 2K or so. Often times you don’t get anything, it just decreases your tax liabilities. It’s crazy how have the liver to claim other people’s kid on their taxes. The fear of IRS is the beginning of wisdom cos they will drag you and shake you down for all you’re worth if they catch you scamming on taxes.

The IRS is cracking down on them now. If you file taxes with kids they can tell you to fax them a copy of the kids SS card, birth certificate and so on. Especially if the last name of the kids don’t match the filer’s last name. They hold the refund until the documents are submitted.

Correct. To claim kids it's to have evidence they live with you and you support them. Only ignorant people believe it is easy done.
BTW Trump lowered so much children tax return, many Americans were crying not getting any or very small the past year.

Bull's eyes!

It is however our way not to turn the heat on one who did us such a favor of hosting us till we are unnecessarily pushed, never an easy decision to follow through. This is the reason I advocate mother's that are to be hosted in the US should not even go for the baby's SSN knowing that neither you nor the child is going to reside in the US....
