You are not prevented from criticising the government as that falls under freedom of speech which is fundamental. You should not be able to go unpunished saying you know for a fact PMB is marrying his Minister on Friday when such is fake and entirely fabricated news likely to cause distress to President Buhari and the Minister involved.

If the bill becomes law then people will think twice before putting their names to such obviously false submissions that cause real harm to others. No one will be looking for you if you claim you feel the Senate is a rubber stamp of the executive. They are not seeking to police the opinions of Nigerians. The bill is about regulating fake news some deliberately pass as the truth. Claiming Buhari died in the UK is fake news and whoever went public with that should be made to prove it or face consequences.
Your either working for this APC government or very naive .So of all the things bothering the masses it's the social media bill that is of utmost importance?Sowore and Dasuki are languishing in jail and our lawmakers haven't called the president to order, people are unemployed and getting killed and the lawmakers don't want to address this ills but it's the social media bill that is their utmost priority and you don't smell a rat?
Infact ,I give up on this conglomeration of people

The biggest mistake Nigerians made was staying aloof to the thugs that rigged themselves into power. The Senate consists of formers Governors that ruined and plundered their states to become overnight billionaires.

They will use their influence once this bill is passed against the masses that speak against their corruption. Agba Jalingo is facing a terrorism charge for asking Governor Ayade of Cross River state to account for what he did with the N500 million naira that was budgeted to setup a micro-finance bank.
Bro, if this bill is passed into law, it may consume them (the politicians). This is because if any offender is arrested or killed, it could lead to a series of protests that may consume them. However, they made it for the South. So, my prediction may not come to pass, because the Northern youth can never join the Southern youth to protest against the rulers who are actually their kinsmen.

Yes indeed. Passing Petroleum bill into law in record time, all other Senate ignored since 1999, that is highly beneficial for Nigeria certainly marks this Senate as the "most stupid" and "most foolish" indeed.

This are kind of people Nigerians allowed to get into the Senate by hook or crook to make laws for them. And they will all pay dearly for it.
Even the corrupt Chimaroke Nnamani spoke against it. That means he's better than those fat bellies there. Abaribe could not speak out against it again. This country's politicians love themselves, while we (the ordinary poor citizens) die defending those of them that are our kinsmen. But they're united in pauperizing us. They're from the same ethnic group called "CORRUPT ETHNIC GROUP". When are we going to unite and fight them?

Army attempting to ask citizens for ID card, you supported,
Hanging for hate speech you clapped,
Social media bill you are cheering on.
You really believe Sowore was cyber bullying Buhari? ? Obama was called an African they asked for his birth certificate, Trump screams 'fake news' yet CNN is live as I type

Since FFK, Reno, etc have been talking who has been hurt except the ego of small men?

Oshigun:

Many of you just lose your head and objectivity when you feel a chance has presented itself for you to use in attacking PMB. Firstly, Buhari does not sponsor bills at the Senate. Senators do. When the Senate approves the bill, they forward it to the executive arm for approval.

Secondly, this law , or a form of it, will likely be in place in most nations of the world in the next 10 years tops anyway so how is the law to do with the type of President Nigeria has when nations with the most highly-read technocrats, as President, are embracing the regulation of social media by new and specific laws?

You guys are just making a mountain out of a molehill. It is bloggers who make money selling fake news and dumbing down the intellect and critical thinking of Nigerians who should worry the most and not ordinary Nigerians who mainly contribute their opinion online.

Don't mind them. They just want to shoot down everything proposed by the Government and all her arms. What is wrong with having robust regulation of social media that protects innocent and defenceless people having their reputations and lives destroyed daily by the lies and fabrications of irresponsible and callous users of social media.

Please shut up and stop showing the world you are lawless and perhaps even a dishonest blogger or Yahooze. If you don't use social media fraudulently and are ready to stand accountable for what you put online, so far as it is not falsehood or overt manipulation of the truth for your own agenda, then you have nothing to worry about.

Don't come her talking as if only Politicians will benefit from this bill. It will protect more ordinary Nigerians in my opinion to include yourself. If someone puts your full name online claiming you robbed their shop, when this is a deliberate and malicious lie, should they not be punished for defaming your character and attracting negative reactions toward you?
Why can't they first make laws to kill corrupt politicians if proven guilty by court to have stolen public funds? Look at my fellow poor citizen defending corrupt politicians who don't mean well for you and me. They steal our collective wealth and then use it to send their children abroad for education, vacation and even stash the money in foreign banks. I can only take them serious if they enact a law to kill corrupt politicians and election riggers as well as thugs by hanging.

Obasanjo was once a political god, today he is relegated

George Bush today, cannot speak, when Obama speaks. Infact Obama is presently the most popular politician in the world, people seek his endorsement like visa to life, some day he will also be relegated.

Today, Buhari and his cronies think they are larger than life, they do whatever they like, whenever they like and people come to tell me that PDP did it first.

no wahala o, but my point is that one day, their turn will pass, no matter how they try to consolidate their tyranny.
just pray that before their turn is over, it will not cost your freedom

You are the fool. A very ignorant one to boot. The nations you all want to run to and laud as bastions of development, like the UK and USA, have strict rules and regulations in place concerning use of social media. For Nigeria to be unsupervised, with anyone able to say what they want online, when such is offensive and even dangerous to others, is not a way forward. Anything from the Government and you m0r0ns just begin to shout like mad inmates of an asylum without inspecting the benefits of what is suggested.

Is it not UK that jailed a white man who used social media to racially mock a black footballer( Patrice Muamba) who had a heart attack on the pitch while playing football? The character was tracked with his IP address, prosecuted successfully and sent to jail. That is the sort of development that shows some form of regulation must be in place. It is not `rocket science abeg. It is like society at large. Take out police and would London and New York not become lawless with 2 hours? Why should social media then have no regulation when some can use it very dangerously?
You are embarrassing yourself....

Trump and indeed previous US presidents face avalanches of invective and grievious insults frequently and yet every developed society does not trifle with freedom of speech.

We are talking of societies where the judicial system is advanced and court pronouncements are sancrosant.

Just imagine the introduction of this draconian/tyrannical law to Nigeria where the judicial system is a rubber stamp...where right and wrong is subjective to the whims and caprices of people in authority.

Most of you APC supporters really do not have conscience.

I did not support hanging anyone for anything. Get your facts right. That will never happen anyway. FFK saying the Buhari Government has killed Kanu and are holding his body offshore on a ship is not hurtful to anyone ba? FFK claiming Buhari has died abroad and even daring to tweet that as reproduced below is annoying to 'ego of small men' only?

https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/wishing-buhari-dead.html

“The true identity of the man in the Villa that claims to be Buhari will only be made known after he is defeated and steps down from power. When that happens Nigerians will be shocked to the marrow….” That was Femi Fani-Kayode’s (FFK’s) tweet last week. It quickly attracted 957 Retweets and 1487 Likes. Since then, many elements of the leading opposition party, PDP, have bought into the conspiracy theory. Outlandish as it is, several commentators suspiciously motivated by either hate or political partisanship, furthered the fable.

What would people like you have Nigeria become? A joke nation any lunatic can just say what they want ,however inciting or dangerously incendiary such is, with no repercussion at all to serve as a deterrent for such irresponsible behaviour? Would FFK and co, year in and year out, have continued with their many lies, clearly intended to cause trouble for the Government of the day, if robust and punitive laws exist that stops them getting away with doing that?
