Its a wrong policy and only looters keep traders on the street to make them Happy
Ajemobi built thousands of shops around ibadan and I think he should chase them away and do the same
I don’t like his style of government,he is trying to please everyone but neglecting the problems,Ibadan is getting worse by day
Unborn generations will pay for this nonsense,we don’t want to return to old messy oyo state left by previous PDP governments
It's people like you that are creating future problems. I once hawked on the streets of Ibadan to pay my school fee.

Makinde is doing his best as Governor of Oyo State. He needs to take some giant strides very soon because 4 years will soon be up. 2023 is not too far away. He needs to create and implement programs that will stand the test of time in Oyo State. Fixing roads, paying salaries etc are good and commendable, but Oyo State needs:

1. A Trade Fair of International Standard
2. Apprenticeship Program for Teenagers and Youths in the State.
3. Agricultural Scheme where people in the state are encouraged to maintain Gardens and Mini Farms in their homes, schools and work places. The State Government can help in sourcing for seedlings and seeds for this scheme. Oyo State should be aiming to be in the top 5 of the best Agricultural States in Nigeria within 8 years.
4. Massive renovation of state owned Primary and Secondary schools.

Cheers.

Hmmm. Politicians!

The moment I hear a politician saying: “I was once like you”,

“I didn’t wear shoes as a child”,

“I was an area boy like you too”,

“My mother hawked sweets and groundnut”, etc,

I feel that it is a prelude to looting the treasury!

A lot of people are over-hyping this Seyi Makinde guy; but I will give him three years to make any reasonable assessment of his administration in Oyo State.

Fight the root cause and not encourage the solution being applied as palliative. Encouraging Street traders instead of protecting them.

NwekeUG:
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has given reason why he has not chased traders off the streets of the state.

According to IgbereTV reports, Makinde said his decision was as a result of his experience as a boy street trader at Yemetu, an Ibadan neighbourhood.

The governor said this at the Oja Oba Central Mosque, Ibadan, during a special prayer to commemorate his 52nd birthday.

He said, “Somebody said that I was quoted as saying that I would not chase away street traders without providing them with alternatives. Yes, that is true because I know the mentality of street trading. I once sold bread by the roadside in Yemetu.

“I said so because we cannot send them away until we provide an alternative for them. And we have started enforcing that. We did that at Ojoo where we asked people not to trade at the point where we want to situate our modern terminus.”

Makinde thanked the people for praying with him and wishing him well.

He said, “Your prayers are important to me. It doesn’t matter if we have a multitude. What we have here is a quality crowd.”

Unfortunately for this thoughtless governor, it doesn't matter what you put in place or how many markets you litter the state with, you are still going to have street traders all over because the issue is not really always about not having markets to accommodate traders, it's always about our collective anti social and lawless mentality. We've seen traders selling right outside market gates instead of inside the markets because they either prefer to be out there selling on the streets or just don't have money to pay for market stalls.

As a society, we must first change our ways by first addressing how we conduct ourselves, learn to obey laws and respect public places.

I see a lot of people praising this governor but either right or wrong, it's a reflection of our hypocrisy and disingenuous attitude when it comes to development, progress, cleanliness and modernity.

The same people love to copy and past pictures from places like Rwanda to compare with Nigeria, to cleric and insult Nigeria and lament how dirty our cities are, but in Kigali, they don't allow street trading, they arrest and lock up street traders without any excuse or sentiments about I used to sell bread so it's OK to let street traders roam the streets and dirty up the environment.

As a nation, we prefer to wallow in sentiments, emotions and hypocrisy instead of lawful and pro-society behaviors, we denigrate ourselves and our own society while comparing ourselves with other places when in fact we can not obey the laws they obey in those places, we praise thoughtless leaders for catering to our feelings, our sentiments and collective hypocrisies.

This is why it baffles me when some people and the usual suspects praising this man put Nigeria down and shout from morning till night about how Rwanda is the cleanest city in Africa and how dirty Nigeria is, but they can not enforce or abide by the laws they abide by in Rwanda.

You can not have it both ways and you can't eat your cake and have it too.

This is not leadership, this is another politician telling you that it is ok to buy, sell and dirty the streets because he used to do the same thing too.
